In “Jane Eyre’s Flights from Decision,” the author explains why the novel itself has caused so much controversy. For years critics have argued about everything and everyone that had to do with the novel. Some say that Jane’s character is contradicting and that the novel’s unity is weak and others don’t agree. At the same time critics argue about how Jane ultimately resolved her conflict in the end. Was it a choice between her values, or did she come to a balance? The author seems to believe that Jane never made a final decision at all. The conflict was never resolved, so that is responsible for the apparent weaknesses in the novel.

These apparent weaknesses, however, seem to run dry when you look at it from the author’s point of view. She believes that Jane’s inner struggle is why the book is so great. That her contradictions are all part of the plot and add to her character. The author also believes that Jane’s childhood is partly responsible for her conflict never being resolved. The second she was under the Reed’s roof she was looked down upon. Then after years of torment Jane feels the only way she can fulfill her needs is to fight back and not be suppressed anymore. Jane fights back to achieve an “idealized image of herself” that is so far out of reach that it makes her struggle worse. She was born to love and care for people, not to build walls in defense. The author then goes on to talk about how Jane has an overall “solution” for all her problems that make her feel better. Since Jane was told she was not beautiful, sociable, or emotional, she decided she would make up for it by being the exact opposites. While striving to be perfect, her conflicts only become worse because she has no self-esteem and can easily be overpowered.

Overall, I now look at “Jane Eyre” as a Horneyan. I agree with the author that Jane never resolved her conflict. That the conflict itself was a struggle within Jane, and this is why the book is so confusing and appealing. Jane strives to be perfect, but will never get there because it isn’t possible. She also wants to love Mr. Rochester, but has many problems with that. She also wants to be great and accomplish many things somewhere far away and beautiful, but never takes the chance. The author points out that her conflicts never are resolved solely because of herself.
