It was 0 years later that I returned to my hometown. I looked around me. Like myself, the town too, had aged. The trees were taller than before and there were several new buildings, which were definitely not there before I left. However, some things still remain unchanged. 1. Arthur is a very proud man and he thinks that men will always be able to cope on their own. He is a very noble man and I do not think that he would ever ask for help from a woman, I also think that he would tell his son that he must not ask help from a female. I can tell by the way that he presents himself that he expects a lot of respect from the members of his household because he is the man who is producing the wealth. I think that he is used to talking down to people at work, being the boss of a large company and he brings it home when he shouldn’t. When Arthur says ‘… a man has to make his own way � has to look after himself’’ he shows us that he does not put a lot of trust in people and that maybe he is a afraid of loosing what he has so he stays a closed book to protect himself and his family.

She felt a slight bit jealousy, which I think she had never felt before. When Sheila found out about Eva’s death she couldn’t feel sorry for her because of the way that she felt before. Because of the power through her name she arranged to get Sheila sacked from Millwards. I don’t think that she meant to be nasty she just felt jealous and needed to do something about it.


7. I think that Sheila is ashamed of the way that she treated Eva because she didn’t mean to do it. I think that she realised what she had done later on and felt embarrassed because she must have looked stupid to the people that work in the shop. She only did it because she didn’t like not being the centre of attention.


8. From the beginning of ‘An Inspector Calls’ you can see that Sheila is quite amazed by what the inspector has to say about Eva Smith. He makes a lot of revelations that only she would know that is why she is so taken back by the inspector. She believes that she is to blame for the suicide of Eva Smith as much as everyone in the house because of that day in Birling & Co and the way she treated her.


Gerald Croft


. In ‘An Inspector Calls’ we learn that Gerald Croft looks up to his father and that he is a typical man’s man. We can see this when he says ‘Hear, hear. And I think my father would agree to that’ because he is expecting his father to agree with him. This also shows a slight bit of big headed behaviour, which you can easily expect from this character. He is courting with a beautiful young lady called Sheila Birling and I think that he thinks he can do better because of him having an affair with Eva Smith/ Daisy Renton.


10. Gerald Croft had an affair with Eva Smith or Daisy Renton, as he knew her. He accidentally impregnated her when they had an affair earlier on in the story. I think that he was just looking for someone who was willing to give him more affection than his girlfriend Sheila was. They met in a club, which was full of hookers and whores, he noticed Eva/ Daisy because of her being quiet and probably the only classy looking girl in there. She was surprised to see him as much as him her. When he found out about their baby together he got scared and gave Eva money to leave and look after the baby. He used Eva while he wasn’t getting along with Sheila, which was very unfair and selfish. I think her having to runaway was also a big step towards suicide because she probably couldn’t deal with having to look after herself.


11. I think that Gerald feels very guilty when the inspector comes round because he realises what he must have done to Eva/ Daisy. I think that he wishes she ‘d blamed him instead of herself because she probably wouldn’t have done anything about it. I think that he feels really bad about the death of Eva Smith because it is making him feel bad. I think that he is a very selfish man because he is always thinking about himself and not others. I think that he thinks he will feel better if he mourns the death of the woman he helped to kill.


1. I think that the audience doesn’t like Gerald Croft very much at the end of the play because he is a very selfish man. I think that women would dislike him more because they would never like to be treated how he has treated Eva and his girlfriend Sheila. I think that men would dislike him because he is making men look bad and not all of them are.


Sybil Birling


1. I think before the inspectors visit to the Birling household Sybil thought her family was almost perfect but after she realised that they was all nearly as guilty for Eva Smiths death just as much her. I think that she feels a bit more relaxed after the visit from the inspector because she knows a lot more about her husband and her children but also a bit annoyed because they didn’t tell her anything about their private lives.


14. When Eva Smith needed help from Sybil and her charity, Sybil turned her away with a child, which was very unfair and mean. She needed help with food and money but Sybil would not help her, which probably led Eva Smith to be unable to fend for herself and her baby. If she would have took her in she probably would have survived and still be with her baby.


15. I think that Sybil feels no shame because she is a very cold and stern person that will not feel sorry for anybody. I think that she had a problem with Eva because how attractive she was. I think that Sybil is very comfortable with how she is and she is not taking any of the blame for Eva Smith’s suicide �‘I did nothing that I am ashamed of or that won’t bear investigation’.


Eric Birling


17. Eric is a young man who enjoys a drink quite a lot, I think that he looks up to his father because of his successful business but he knows that he cannot follow in his footsteps because of his problem with alcohol. Eric enjoys his life but I think that it is a sham that he feels he has to have a drink to do this. Motivation is a complex subject that attempts to rationalise the way people act. Everyone has needs and expectations that drive us towards the achievement of desired goals. The challenge for today’s manager is to create an environment where people are given the opportunity to achieve worthwhile goals, whilst feeling of value to the organisation.


Maslow (14) argued that behaviour would be determined by the strongest unsatisfied need in his defined hierarchy. While highly enlightening, the main flaw in applying this theory in management is that the satisfaction of these needs is often determined by factors outside the workplace.


Later, Herzberg contended that even if “dissatisfiers” were positive, this would only ensure a state of neutrality and that positive motivators (Achievement, Recognition, Challenging Work, Responsibility, Advancement, personal Development) were required to actually encourage motivation.


This theory challenges Managers not to look at staff as units of production, but to work proactively to provide positive “motivators”, specific to individuals to encourage self-development with the promise of a proportional return in productivity.





Practical Application in the Workplace


The first objective was to find out what motivates / frustrates the team and to develop practical methods of creating motivation using these areas as a guideline. The following were identified as being important


1. Scattered Role and Measurable Daily Achievement





It was decided at a team meeting to develop a work schedule database that identified tasks as belonging to certain core areas and their frequency of occurrence. Individual strengths or, areas where development was desired, were used as criteria to reassign ownership of tasks where necessary to minimise division of core areas.





Reports are printed off showing daily, weekly, monthly and annual tasks. This identifies areas of responsibility and has allowed team members to devise a basic work plan into which the reactive aspects can be fitted. New tasks are either added to the routine database or fitted in as “one-off’s”.





Team member’s report less frustration as clear work objectives are being set and completed. Completed tasks have become obvious and a feeling of achievement and focus has developed. A feeling of control and ability to plan has led to a feeling of increased willingness to take on other tasks as their delivery can be planned.








. Inefficient Information Storage delaying Tasks





Information storage was haphazard leading to difficulties in access. The team decided to restructure both paper and computer storage systems with the objective being to streamline information access. Existing files would be broken down into smaller units with one topic per file, and filed alphabetically according to financial year where possible. An index to the system was created.





It was suggested that wherever possible, procedures be drawn up (including filing paths and copies of documents) to negate “relearning” less frequent tasks and reduce time spent locating related documents.





The team reported satisfaction on achieving the objectives set and increased efficiency from streamlined information flow. The team has been motivated to revise other procedures.





























. Personal Growth and Challenge





During database development (see Page ) a challenging developmental aspect was identified. This would normally form part of the Clerical Supervisor’s remit. After discussion portions were delegated. Weekly status meetings were formalised as a forum to discuss issues and progress.





The Clerical Officer felt this has provided an ongoing challenge and will create core skills to motivate applications for senior roles. Further education relevant to the section, but of benefit to career progression is also under discussion.





The Clerical Officer has given positive feedback, shown more interest in the role, contributing valuable suggestions for development.








4. Financial and Career Advancement


Although this aspect of motivation was discussed at length, it was agreed that the most that could be achieved in the current role was to put in place the foundations for future growth and ensure that skills required for the current role were developed. As no boards exist in the organisation and recruitment for next level roles is not being undertaken in the next year, we have had to face the real possibility that a valued member of staff may move out to shortcut the route to financial improvement. It is hoped that the balance of improved motivation and a good working environment may delay this until some acceptable prospects become available in house.

The League of nation was an attempt to replace the ‘international anarchy’ of pre-war days with an organization which would use economic and possibly military sanctions against aggressors to maintain collective security for both the small and great states. The League of Nation’s first failure was in dealing with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. In 11, Japanese troops invaded northeastern China; China appealed to the league, which condemned Japan and ordered her troops to be withdrawn. When Japan refused, the League appointed a commission under Lord Lytton who in 1 decided that there were faults on both sides and suggested that Manchuria should be governed by the League. However, Japan rejected this and withdrew from the League in March of 1. The question of economic sanctions, let alone military ones, was never even raised, because Britain and France had serious economic problems. Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is an affliction which affects an average of five to fifteen of all mentally ill patients and one percent of the population. At this point in the novel Raskolnikov’s character does not seem to be up to the full potential of an “extraordinary man”. Following the murder Raskolnikov becomes very paranoid. He is always suspecting that someone has found out what he has done and has turned him in to the police. Raskolnikov needed a new suit and some money to go on with life, which he got, and with his money, the little that he had, still gave to those in need of it, because he saw that he did not need the money. This also made him realize that he did not murder for money or to help mankind. But he still is not willing to accept that so he goes to other people like Zametov to “confess” and see what he thinks, showing that he still had a need for human contact and that he was not independent, therefore not fulfilling his theory.

During Raskolnikov’s first thoughts of murder he felt a sense of alienation, he disliked society, he dreaded meeting people and being around people, “he had become so completely absorbed in himself, and isolated from his fellow that he dreaded meeting, not only his landlady, but anyone at all.”(1) He felt this way because he felt that he was superior to all others because he thought of himself as an “extraordinary man”. Though even in the beginning of his senses of alienation he could not stand it, he had sudden urges to be with people, like when he decided to go into the tavern, in Part 1.


After the murders, when he became ill, Raskolnikov began pushing away from people such as, Razumihin who wanted to help him and keep him company while he was ill, “you too, you want to torture me!”(5). He was annoyed that they were always there. He also feels irritated by his mother and sister, at their first brief meeting he tells them to leave him, “Go home…with him…Don’t torture me!”(18) During their second encounter he again sensed alienation even though he was being in more control of his feelings, “He saw that every word of the following conversation seemed to touch on some sore place and irritate it.”(07) His mother and his sister, Dounia seemed to be afraid of him now, “he’s so strange! He’s talking kindly, but I’m afraid!”(10) And Raskolnikov is aware of it, “It is as if they were afraid of me”(1) Also later during his self analysis he sees what alienation has done to him, “’Mother, sister�how I loved them! Why do I hate them now? Yes, I hate them.’”(56)


In Raskolnikov’s dream he sees everyone watching him huddled together in silence watching him with expectation. And he did not know why he is alienated to a point where he cannot take it and wakes up screaming.

The very first seen of Part 4 begins with the meeting of Raskolnikov and Svidrigailov. Raskolnikov is shocked to find Svidrigailov in his room, “Can this still be a dream?”(61) Svidrigailov has come to see Raskolnikov on two reasons, one, to make his personal acquaintance, second, to ask for Raskolnikov’s help in his pursuit of Dounia. Raskolnikov, of course, refuses to help him contact Dounia, “We dislike you. We don’t want to have anything to do with you.” (6) Svidrigailov still pursues and says that him and Raskolnikov have something in common, Raskolnikov is curious so he stays and has a conversation with Svidrigailov on numerous subjects, such as Svidrigailov seeing ghosts of his wife Martha Petrovna, and how he was “involved” with her death, also about his plans for the future, getting married, going on a journey, and some money he wanted to give to Dounia. The scene ends with Svidrigailov leaving with words of his wanting to see Dounia.


This scene shows how Svidrigailov is similar to Raskolnikov; he is caught in a similar predicament as Raskolnikov, because he too has “murdered”, Martha Petrovna. It also seems that he too is suffering from alienation, “’I expect you’ve not talked to anyone for some days?’…’Scarcely anyone.’”(64) He also seems to be ill, because lately he has been seeing ghosts of Martha Petrovna, “I agree that ghosts only appear to the sick.”(68) In addition, Svidrigailov seems to be losing his senses because he quickly forgets about thing he has just talked about, like his journey. Another emotion that seems to arise in Lebeziatnikov is his hatred for Luzhin, “he too was beginning to dislike Pyotr Petrovitch.”(8) Lebeziatnikov feeling towards Luzhin change from yesterday because now he is beginning to see how Luzhin acts. During Lebeziatnikov’s speech, Luzhin throughout laughed and did not take the subject seriously as opposed to the speaker. Another aspect that that irritated Lebeziatnikov about Luzhin is his constant teasing, reminding Lebeziatnikov of his inferiority and the great difference between them. And in the end, Lebeziatnikov ends up confronting Luzhin of slipping a hundred roubles into Sonya’s pocket, therefore saving face for Sonya and revealing how low Luzhin has become.

The very will of Raskolnikov to go to crossroads and take on his fate, shows that he has accepted the fact that he has done a crime and now he must confess and take on what sentence is given to him, also accepting that he is not an “extraordinary man”, and cannot take any more of the torment caused by trying to live up to his theory. The act of him bowing down and kissing the earth, signifies that he is saying goodbye to his life now and bowing down to the whole world to show that he does not have as much pride as he had before, because his bowing provoked laughter by watchers, showing again how he accepts that he is not valid for his theory.

Abstract In this paper, I will discuss Critical Thinking Styles and Forces of influence. I will describe the setting, frame the problem in two different ways, each reflecting specific forces of influences. I will describe the types of thinking used and examine other forces that influenced the way the problem was framed. How do we accept each other’s differences and still get anything done?


Decision-making often comes from people’s experience, thinking, and preferences. Sometimes a decision can make perfect sense in theory, but it may not work in real life situation. To make a good decision requires critical thinking skills. How the management of a company makes decisions has a big impact on the outcome. Some years ago, a manager of our company made a decision and refused an employee time away from work to care for her child. This decision raised some issues in our workplace.


The day started off as any typical Monday morning and things were going as usual. Associates were getting coffee, discussing what they did over the weekend, and preparing their desks for the start of the day. Unexpectedly, a crying noise was heard from one of the associates. Immediately, a few concerned associates approached her and asked was there a problem? At first, the individual was little hesitant to expose what had occurred because it was private. After a little coaxing, from another associate, she explained. The associates had a sick child and needed time away from the office to care for the child. She said, while explaining why she need time off, the manager abruptly stopped her and said she would need time to determine if the weeks needed away would be granted. The following day, the employee spoke with the manager and told request denied without any explanation.


Another manager department who had excellent reasoning skills heard of the incident and tried to console the individual. The manger explained to the associate he would speak with her manager and try to determine why the problem. He also advised he would do some checking if any type of exception could be made. A meeting was held, immediately after the two managers spoke. The associate’s manager was being very persuasive while giving her valid reasons how she arrived at her decision. She explained that it was in the best interest of the department to decline the request because of a large assignment due. She went on and explained granting the request other associates would have to work overtime to meet their target date. Some associates thought her reasoning were legitimate. Some thought she was being very creative by acting as if the department was in her best interest and the declination was valid. In addition, she reminded everyone that she was empowered to make decisions, right or wrong and that was something everyone would have to deal with. She indicated she was the manager and was accountable of the work and she was doing her job. After that comment, the meeting was out of control. Associates threatened to quit and a few walked out. Some did not want any involvement in what was occurring. The associate accused the manager of being a racist. The two were arguing uncontrollably. The team leader made every attempt to calm them, but was not very effective. Because, the power to make decisions was the manager, she screamed and said it was her department and she had made the decision and it was final. This irritated the team leader and she asked if the two could have a meeting with a Human Resource representative with the associate. She explained as team leader, it was her duty everyone is treated fairly and with respect. She made it very clear to the manager her judgment was not logically thought out and was not acceptable. Following that remark, the meeting ended and the department manager, the team leader, and associate went to the Human Resource department.

Finally, the human resource manager praised the team leader for her efforts. She told how courageous she was to jeopardize her position for someone else. She also told her not to worry that no one would reprimand her. Her final remarks were everyone makes wrong decisions from time to time. But, by developing decision-making skills, one can increase their success on a personal or professional level by having compassion for the other person and treating the other how you would like to be treated.


In conclusion, to base any decision on personal perspective or opinions without taking the time to analyze the situation is risky. If the resource manger had not solved the situation, it could have resulted in losses for the company or even a law suite. One factor that was definitely an influence was the manager’s inability to reason logically with her associates. Being a manager, she probably thought she could make any decision without any repercussion. Other factors that could have had an influence on the problem was one of the individuals was white and the other black. Race participated in this situation because it was openly expressed. The associate felt the manger declined her request because of her race.


How do we accept each other’s differences and still get anything completed? In order to solve problems and get the job done, an individual would need to put their differences aside and made the right decision. Race, culture, gender, religion, economic statutes etc. should not have an influence on how a problem is solved. When people are put in position of authority, to make decisions, they should be receptive. One should not judge others by jumping to conclusions without gathering all of the facts. People should understand bad decisions are made consciously and unconsciously. Decisions should be based on information and facts that are relevant to the problem. If something is not understood, seek advice from others who know more about the details of the problem. We should not be afraid to admit things we do not know. All resources available should be used. We need to accept individuals have different personality types have and relate to decision-making strategies differently. Most importantly, we all know in some cases, two or more heads can be better than one. Learning how to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of others, we can get things done!
