Is There Deeper Changes To Be Had?

Recent events have left many parents and other Americans asking “Why?” A high school

in South Carolina is at the center of this national crisis. Local authorities stormed this high

school, after receiving a tip that a student was selling drugs in the school. From what is known,




they may of had good cause to perform this task. The problem lies within how they executed this

drug bust. The police swarmed the school with guns drawn, drug and bomb sniffing dogs

attacking, and students being commanded to “hit the ground!” Why such force?

It all comes back to the school shootings that have been terrifying our nation for the last

five years. The most notable of all, was the Columbine High School rampage in Colorado. After

April 0th, 1, the date of the Columbine shooting, many schools nationwide have changed

their policies to prevent these massacres from happening again. Local, State, and Federal

governments have also become actively involved to help avoid these senseless acts of violence.

Yet, after seeing what happened last week, one could ask “Have these changes really helped?”

Maybe President Bush should issue a color-coded warning system for school violence, like he

has for terrorist attacks.

The changes as a result of these attacks are widespread; schools, principles, and teachers

have a new sense of paranoia, rules have become stricter at schools--making many seem like

prisons, and probably the most effective change has occurred in the more proactive approach of

mediating and counseling of students.

The fear of these attacks happening again is normal. No one would want to go through a

similar situation to that of Columbine. That does not mean that we should allow this fear to

affect proper decision making. This is where paranoia comes into effect. Take for example of

the principle of that high school in South Carolina. He was told, by another student, that a

classmate was selling drugs. The principle had previous knowledge of the accused, and knew he

was a “troubled” student. Instead of handling the situation himself, he felt the best thing for the

school was to call the authorities. After relaying the information to the police, including the fact

that the student was “troubled”, the police came to their decision. They did not want to have

what happened in Columbine happen in their high school, city, or state. Their decision to use

excessive force has hurt more students emotionally, then has helped anyone. There were no

drugs, guns, or bombs on the accused student. The whole situation could of been settled by the

principle and not the police. Instead the principles and the polices paranoia took over and has

left many Americans accessing how we should handle these situations.

One way many Americans believe we can handle this is by having stricter rules within

our schools. If someone came back from the grave to see our schools now, they would ask

“What the hell happened?” With all the changes within the schools, they now appear as prisons

and not educational institutions. The changes are numerous and here are some of the biggest of

these changes; many schools do not allow backpacks, they require I.D.’s to be worn at all times,

some public schools have enforced dress codes, and some schools have metal detectors, along

with police, at all entrances of the schools. When asking a former Columbine student about how

she felt after her school started to enforce I.D.’s and no backpacks, she said “I felt as though I

was being punished, eventhough I was a victim and had nothing to do with the attack.” These

rules were not and still are not taken warmly by students. History has shown that stricter rules

cause more rebellion. Which in this case, could it cause more acts of violence by some students?

Hatred and anger is easily built up when individuals are not able to be themselves. Still many

believe that this is the way to ensure future tragedies don’t happen again.

Others believe there is a better solution to be had. These people believe that the best way

to save schools from having these occurrences, is to talk to the students one on one. Some

schools have hired more counselors, and have been teaching students how to peer mediate. In

many cases, the school districts have started talking to their students as early as elementary

school. These individual schools and school districts have realized and accepted that not all of

their students are going to be happy. They understand that students will be made fun of and

sometimes be at the center negative attention by other classmates. These schools do the most

important thing and talk to both individuals, sometimes together or on a more personal basis.

They let those, who are being picked on, know that there is nothing wrong with them, and they

give them appropriate avenues which they can deal with their feelings. As stated the counselors

don’t stop there. They talk to the “bullies” and help them see why they are always having to pick

on others. Mediation and counseling students allows them to know that they have someone to

talk to without feeling uncomfortable, as they might feel with their parents. Students are able to

express their feelings which can prevent anger, hatred, and resentments from building up inside

them. Counselors give students the attention they need and deserve. This helps deter students

from trying to receive the attention they need through negative means such as school shootings

and other acts of violence.

Governments and politics can say they have the answers with stricter rules inside and

outside the schools, but their political banter will not solve the problem. We have to find the root

of the cause and that is not the rules. The root is the students themselves. These acts of violence

are merely a cry for attention. Many schools have come to accept this and are trying to address it

the best they can, but it doesn’t start or stop with the schools. It needs to begin at home with the

parents. Parents must give the needed attention to their children. They must be willing to

become involved in their children’s live. They must care enough to listen, and understand

enough to know that anger will not help. Parents must try to help solve the problems and not

simply punish their children. No longer can parents stick their children on front of televisions,

video game systems, or computers. Children’s emotional voids can not be filled with

materialistic substitutes. Parents must not only become active in children’s lives, but also their

feelings. If this happens, we have our best chance of stopping these senseless cries for attention

by our children.

In early February of 00, I got accepted into Husson College of Bangor, Maine. I was very happy. Three weeks later I also got accepted into EMCC of Bangor Maine. Now I found myself trying to choose between the two schools. There are good things and bad things about both schools. I thought and discussed these issues with my family and after a couple of weeks I decided to try EMCC.

The cost difference between the schools was probably the biggest factor in my decision. I received scholarships to cover my entire first year’s tuition here at EMCC. That number would just skim the surface of a semester’s bill at Husson. As far as I am concerned, I can receive just as good of an education here and not feel like I am just a number. I will be able to graduate from EMCC virtually debt free, where as at Husson I would most likely face a five figure debt which would take me years to pay.

Another factor in my decision was two years versus four years. I honestly do not know if four more years of school would be for me. I like the fact that in less than two years I will be out working and starting a career, and if I feel the need to stay in school longer, I can do that also.

A third factor effecting my decision is that I did not want to take classes at Husson that I would never need to take here at EMCC. Four year schools like Husson usually make you take core courses that don’t always relate to your major. Here I am taking courses that the employers in my field of work want its workers to take.




Now that we are a couple of months into this first semester, I think my decision was a good one. I only had to pay $ 50 dollars of my own money. Now I only have to worry about paying for next year, if I do not get any financial aid. All I have to worry about now is working hard and getting my degree.

In the following paper, I plan to discuss the source of conflict between the title characters of Antigone and Creon in Sophocles “Antigone.” I will also discuss how each character justifies his or her actions and what arguments they give for their justifications. Finally, I talk about who Sophocles believes is right as opposed to whom I believe is right.

The main source of conflict between Antigone and Creon is the issue of the burial of Antigone’s dead brother, Polyneices. Both of her brothers were killed in battle; however one brother fought against their home city and was considered a traitor. Creon issued a law that whoever tried to bury Polyneices would be put to death. Antigone is very upset because her one brother is graced with all the rites of a hero, while the other is disgraced. Antigone is determined to bury her brother because of her loyalty to her family and to the gods. She believes that no mortal, such as Creon, has the right to keep her from her own. Even if Antigone must die during the burial, she will not disgrace the laws of the gods. She believes that she has to please to dead before she pleases the living.

Creon’s states, “Whoever places a friend above the good of his own country, he is nothing.” (Antigone 0-04) Therefore, he does not allow the burial of Antigone’s brother because he did not place the good of his country first. He was a traitor is Creon’s eyes. Creon made this law for the good of his country. The following statement that Creon makes exemplifies this “I could never make that man a friend of mine who menaces our country”, “Never will the traitor be honored above the patriot” (Antigone -5) Creon’s argument is for loyalty to the country and he does not think that the gods would have any concern about the body of a traitor.

Antigone goes on with the burial of Polyneices because she claims that Zeus did not make the proclamation and that a mere mortal cannot override the gods. Her justification for the burial of her brother is that she will not break the laws of the gods. She already knows that she will die one day and she would rather die now than to let her brother rot. Allowing this would be a pain greater to her than death itself.

When Creon discovers that Antigone is the person that defied his proclamation, he still sticks to his word by punishing her to death, if he lets her go, he is not a man, she is. “This would be unheard of” states Creon, “No woman is going to lord it over me.” (Antigone 588-58) Creon could not make a law and then take it back, especially not for a woman. He says, “I’m not about to prove myself a liar, not to my people, I’m going to kill her.” (Antigone 7-75) Creon also feels he must defend the men who live by the law and never let a woman triumph or be inferior to a woman.

I believe Creon originally made this for the good of his country. He would not be considered a very good leader if he allows the burial of traitors. However, when he finds out that the one who broke the law was a woman, it became a matter of pride. He could not rebuke what he originally said, especially if it was a woman that broke the law. He would be believed to be less of a man to listen to what a woman told him to do.

I think that both Creon and Antigone can be considered right in their struggle. Antigone is suffering greatly due to the loss of both of her brothers. Her one brother was treated as a hero and the other as a dog. The gods also ruled Antigone. She was fearful of their wrath if she disobeyed them. I do not believe she did anything wrong and I see no weaknesses in her argument. I think that she did the right thing and was very brave for doing so. Creon can also be considered right in his argument. He has his pride to worry about; he is the king after all. Kings are not supposed to say one thing and then do another. He proclaimed a law that was not to be broken. His biggest concern was that not only was the law broken, it was broken by a woman. Women were considered to not have a voice or be strong and courageous as Antigone was. They were supposed to be submissive and listen to the man. Therefore, Creon felt he especially had to enforce his law. The weakness in Creon’s case is that his pride would ultimately prove to be the ruin of him. Creon had many people, such as his own son and a prophet, come to him and try to warn him of his decision to kill Antigone. Tiresias the prophet says, “Stubbornness brands you for stupidity-pride is a crime.” (Antigone 117-11) However, after Tiresias warns and prophesizes of all the terrible things that would befall Creon if he went through with killing Antigone, he changed his mind. I felt bad for him at the end of the play because he does go to free Antigone, but finds that she hung herself. Creon’s son and wife then both kill themselves as well. For Creon, it was a little too late. In the end, a messenger says, “Creon shows the world that of all the ills afflicting men, the worst is a lack of judgement.” (Antigone 17-17)

I believe that Sophocles thinks that Antigone is right. Throughout the play, the chorus makes several references of how they feel bad for Antigone. No one throughout the play, besides her sister, tries to talk Antigone into reconsidering burying Polyneices. Creon’s son Haemon tells his father of what he hears people around the town saying about the situation. Haemon says, “No woman ever deserved death less, and such a brutal death for such a glorious action…Death? She deserves a glowing crown of gold.” (Antigone 777-778, 78) The play seems to praise the actions of Antigone and it is never seen that she is looked down upon for what she did, except by Creon.

In conclusion, the gods and the love of her family rule Antigone’s life. Creon’s life is ruled by what he thinks is good for his country and pride. Creon did not change his mind to free Antigone until a prophet told him he would suffer horribly for his actions. However, because Creon was so stubborn for so long and did not take heed to anyone’s advice sooner, he ultimately suffers in the end, as does everyone else in the play. This was all due to a man’s lack of good judgment, selfish pride and stubbornness.

Language is a nuisance. It can humiliate, irritate, aggravate, frustrate, and manipulate. Language is a friend. It can advocate, accommodate, cooperate, alleviate, and mitigate. Language is clarification. It can illustrate, demonstrate, elucidate, illuminate, and commentate. Language is an arbiter. It can mediate, consummate, consulate, adjudicate, and negotiate. Language is strong, influential, intimate, kind, mean, crude, and inspires creativity. Language has the power to excite us and inform us. It can help us and comfort us. However, language has the power to hurt us and destroy our dreams. It can insult us and make us angry. Indeed, language is powerful. Granted, these are figurative or metaphorical representations of language. Nonetheless, these are words that strike us at our souls. They provoke our thoughts and move our emotions. This is how language derives its power. Words can have an effect on social identity; they can shape attitudes and values. In her essay, “The Female Body”, Margaret Atwood uses language in a metaphorical sense in order to incite these different thoughts and feelings. She uses sarcasm and rhetoric to satirize the “traditional” view of the female role in society. In order to understand the point of her essay, one must identify the use of language, and what her word choice conveys. Atwood uses tone, imagery, and repetition to show how language shapes the traditional view of the female gender in society.

Before witting this essay, Atwood received a letter from Michigan Quarterly Review, asking her to write on the “topic” of the female body, the “capacious topic”. In the first paragraph alone, Margaret Atwood refers to the female body as a “topic” fourteen times, and once as a “topical topic” (407). This can be off-putting to a reader because they see the word so many times. When a word gets repeated enough times in discourse, it begins to lose its meaning. The word becomes a paltry sound without substance and definition. By doing this, Atwood is mocking the request that she received from Michigan Quarterly Review. It expresses her antagonism towards what was meant to be a simple supplication. The tone that comes from her overuse of the word “topic” allows the reader to see her ridicule. It is meant to provoke the reader as well. It causes the reader to get aggravated by the word topic. When “topic” begins to loose its conventional meaning in this essay, it begins to take on an offensive one. Atwood allows the connotation of the word to change from neutral to negative.

Visualization does not come easily for many readers, especially when they can not relate to the material. The use of words can help the reader visualize something, thus making the material more applicable. When a reader can see an author’s focus, they become more vulnerable to the solicitation, or the argument. Margaret Atwood uses words like, “plastic, illuminates,” and “it” in her essay to give visualizations of a stereotype (407-408). The word “plastic” attributes to the female body the qualities of an object rather than of a living, animate person. Inanimate words like “it” and “plastic” dehumanize the female body; even referring to women as “the female body” dehumanizes them. It sets them apart from mainstream society by classifying a woman as a mere “body”. Atwood sets up a sarcastic tone by using these words in her essay. This tone lets the reader know that she takes an aggressive stance against the female body as a “topic.” She is arguing that the use of these words construct a negative role for many women in society.

One interesting way that Margaret Atwood help the reader visualize her point is by setting up a part of her essay like an advertisement. She lists what a female body may come with as if it were sold in a store. “The basic female body comes with the following accessories garter belt, panti-griddle, crinoline…,” and the list goes on until she closes it off with, “lace teddy, bed, head” (Atwood 407). It is interesting how she uses the word “accessories” before going into this list. It directs the reader’s attention towards something that they would see on television. She sets up theses “accessories” as if the female body was a toy or tool that is sold. This evokes feelings of objection; it causes discomfort because people are not supposed to be things that are sold, they are human flesh. But, what is really striking is how she ends the paragraph with “lace teddy, bed, head” (407). “Lace teddy” and “bed,” in this list, seem to have sexual connotations. These words illustrate that Atwood does not just refer to the female body as an object, but an object whose objective is pleasure. In this way, these words demoralize women. The word “head” is added as if it were a luxury. Atwood refers to the head as an accessory, as if it did not come standard with the female body. This can tell society that women are not people, but things that have standard and optional features. In a way, this can communicate that women are more like dolls, and that they do not always contain a mind of their own.




This perspective on dolls is expanded upon when Atwood introduces a dialogue between a man and a woman. “He said, I won’t have any of those things in my house… She said, If we don’t let her have one like all the other girls she’ll feel singled out. It’ll become an issue… Repression breeds sublimation” (408). This is suggestive of a girl’s role in society. These words play on the stereotype that little girls should have the Barbie dolls. But, Atwood’s words are not truly suggestive until she introduces the “pointy plastic tits… wardrobes, and that stupid male doll” (408). This is where the language evokes illustrative thoughts. They go far beyond the description of a doll; they become the description of how women are “supposed” to be. These words are words that are associated with the ideal female body in a male-centric/dominated society. They suggest that a female’s role in society is to look attractive in the eyes of males, accumulate a gorgeous wardrobe, and be a trophy to the man that “finds” her. “Pointy plastic tits” makes the female body representative of sexuality. These dolls are not merely dolls; they don’t always serve their illusionary purpose of being toys. They have indirect uses; they tell girls how to be girls. They tell them what to look like, aspire for, and act like.

Although these dolls may have their own underlying uses, so does the female body itself. Margaret Atwood argues that the Female body in society is used as a tool, sells, and is sold. “The female body has many uses. It’s been used as a door knocker, a bottle opener, as a clock with a ticking belly…” (408). This list carries on, explaining the established uses of women in society. In other words, the female role in society consists of being used, used for whatever the male-dominated society can mastermind. The phrase, “the female body has many uses,” implies that women are versatile tools, like a Swiss Army knife- when there is no need for one of its purposes, society can close the tool and open a new one to serve another purpose. This is the illustration that a reader can obtain by observing the manner of the words. The words, “It sells,” in this paragraph are particularly strong as well. It asserts that women are ads, meant to appeal to an audience. To understand the true power of the words “it sells,” one must understand who the audience is, who “it” is appealing to. So we ask the question, “who does the female body appeal to, who is it selling to?” Women? Maybe, but a more general answer would be men. Although this is probably assumed by most, further analyzing of the words reveals that the society that uses women to sell and sells women is indeed male-centric. When Atwood uses phrases like “It sells,” and “It is sold,” she objectifies the female body. She does this to show the reader what society has turned women into a tool. Do words have enough power to turn a human being into a tool? It would seem so.

Although Atwood does use this consistent tone of sarcasm, it does reach a peak. This happens when she refers the female body as a natural resource. “She’s a natural resource, a renewable one luckily, because those things wear out so quickly. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Shoddy goods” (408). This is arguably the most powerful point in the whole essay. This line dehumanizes the female body more than any other sentence in the entire essay. The word choice and phrasing can seem appalling to an audience. This evokes emotions of pure dissidence with the “traditional role” of the female gender. A “natural resource,” first of all is something that is often taken for granted, much like the true value of female human beings, as opposed to the value of any other male living person. Additionally, Atwood tacks on the word “renewable” (408). This is the epitome of sarcasm in this essay. By saying that the female gender is a renewable resource, she is saying that one could always be replaced by another. It raises the questions “humans are not like throw-away tuber ware, can someone really be replaced so easily?” and “does this place a value on human life?” The word “renewable” answers affirmatively to both of these questions. It tells the reader that once a female is overused, obsolete, or generally unfashionable, it can be simply thrown out and replaced by a new one. It is much like a car, valuable with low miles while it is in its prime, but worn and cheap once it reaches, say, 100,000 miles. Even worse, Atwood illustrates a declining value and a loss of longevity when she says, “They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” This not only places a value on the female gender, but a diminishing value. It almost applies basic economics to women; they have a sort of diminishing marginal utility. This is a prime example of how language can yield so much power. It has the power to show that women can lose value in time. Atwood illustrates how society can easily replace a woman that has lost value with time with a younger, or more valuable one.

What is language? It is an adjective ending in ‘ate,’ and ‘ous.’ It is noun for something that is provocative. It is support for an argument. It is the whole argument. Language conveys meaning, vision, evokes emotion, and shapes views. In her essay, “The Female Body”, Margaret Atwood utilizes language to its full extent. Atwood shows how language shapes the traditional view of women in society using tone, imagery, and repetition. She uses controversy to mock social stereotypes, her words tell us so. She shows the role the female gender in the male-dominant society using sarcasm. The relationship between her word choices and her meaning are very direct in the sense that they make it clear that the female body is not a mere “topic”. Atwood shows that language choice can make or break a topic, undermine or support an idea. Language can do all that? Language is powerful, indeed.

Cool to the touch, the dirt was like an artist clay, ready to be molded into a work of art.

Notre Dame high school, my alma mater, is located just down the street from my home, in turn producing an abundance of after school visitors. Alexander and Roxy, two cats with enough personality for at least five families, add special character and excitement to my family home. My cat is a magician who magically knows when I need his assistance. My bad moods trigger a signal and it’s as if he’s instantly there. All beings are basically good - including ones with a case condition called SP.

However, when they fail to differentiate between themselves and their case -

they can act badly and cause illogical destruction.

When a person goes into agreement with his case, he is being his case, and he does not DIFFERENTIATE between his case and himself - that is what out ethics is. There is no distance between him and his case because by agreeing with it, he has BECOME it and he is BEING his case.




Thus, he believes case thoughts and ideas to be his own ideas - no differentiation there you see, and so he ACTS on those thoughts, because he accepted them as his thoughts, and that is dramatization and that is overts.

The enemy formula is a real case cracking process when done right.

When done properly, it can cause astonishing case change.

The reason for that - the enemy formula Find Out Who You Really Are - gets the guy to DIFFERENTIATE between himself and his case. Thus, he gets distance between himself and his case, thus he can see that he is not his case, thus he goes out of agreement with it as it is not him. Then ethics are in.

What is the whole bridge but a long process of Find Out Who You Really Are?

Because in the end - the reward is - to re-discover basic personality - you.

You get you back - the REAL you. And the REAL you is sane and basically good.

There is never any reason to hate any living being. Beings who have their enemy formula out and therefore dramatize and commit overts resulting in illogical destruction - are still basically good but their actions are bad. One can hate a beings actions - but when you hate the being himself that is you NOT DIFFERENTIATING between that being and that beings case.

Ethics officers in the church do not understand ethics and therefore MISAPPLY it - resulting in destruction. They do not differentiate between the being and his case and so they believe that beings are bad. So they handle people with the philosophy that beings are bad. And, thereby they CAUSE OUT ETHICS by throwing the persons enemy formula OUT.

Allow me to tell a story to illustrate correct application of ethics. A friend of ours had a daughter who was being a criminal and took drugs and encouraged others to act the same way. Efforts were made to handle her by church ethics officers without success. She hated Scientology and ethics as a result. Her dramatizations and out ethics continued.

Now the only reason to ever have an auditing session or an ethics handling is to help the person receiving it. The session belongs to the pc, he owns it, it is his session and therefore it is done for only one reason - only to help him - not to help anybody else.

Our friends daughter came to visit with us. I asked her if she would like some help and told her my only interest in offering was simply to help her - I did not care about anybody else but her. She found that concept acceptable and said yes.

I then hatted her on the tone scale. I told her that the purpose of a session was to cause a rise on the tone scale - to make her a more happy person. She found an increase in happiness for herself was also an acceptable idea and said yes again.

I then hatted her on the Overt Motivator sequence, including getting her to understand what a justifier is. I then said to her - people think you are bad, dont they? She said yes. I said that includes church ethics officers, they also think you are bad, dont they? She said yes. I said that includes you - you also believe you are bad, dont you? She said yes.

I then said here is the auditing process we are going to run -

Find Out Who You Really Are

We cleared up the word find out - which means discover.

We cleared the word discover as being the act of UNCOVERING.

So, in order to discover, one has to UNCOVER something that is COVERED UP.

Well, what is being COVERED UP here is the real YOU.

Whatever is COVERING you up so you cant see the real you - is what we need to handle here. When she understood that, we began.

I asked her what bad actions she might have been doing in her lifetime and she started telling me some. I would then get her to spot her JUSTIFIERS for those actions - because just getting someone to tell you an overt does nothing for the case - because they dont think it was an overt. They have justifiers for the overts you see - so in their mind it really was not an overt because its justified. So, to take an overt OFF the case - you do not audit overts - you audit justifiers.

So, I would ask her why wasnt it an overt?. She gave me the usual justifiers - they are assholes, they deserved it, they did such and such to me, etc. After auditing justifiers for awhile - I said to her - Im confused about something. She asked what?

I said - I thought you told me you are a bad person. She said I did tell you that. I said - well what is confusing me is Im wondering why a bad person would justify overts. Wouldnt a bad person just do the overts without feeling any need to justify them? This gave her pause and she looked at me like a ghost had just entered the room - now there was a unique thought, never looked at it that way.

So, I said - lets continue on now - and had her give me more overts and justifiers for those overts. Then we hit the one I was looking for. She was telling me about cheating on her boyfriend and she felt bad about that one. I could see she was suppressing grief. So, I asked her - do you feel like crying? She burst into tears.

We took a little time to get the grief charge off.

I then asked her how did it make her feel that she had cheated on her boyfriend. She said shitty. I then said - when you hurt other people, how does it make YOU feel? She said shitty.

I then said - Im confused about something again. She said what? I said - why would a bad person feel shitty about cheating on their boyfriend? Or feel shitty when they hurt someone else? She finally got it. She said they wouldnt feel bad.

She then cognited and said -

Oh my god! Im not a bad person - Im a good person who just does bad things!

I said I agree - thats the end of the process - Find Out Who You Really Are.

She then said that she had been unhappy her whole life and she saw that other people were happier than she was and felt that was unfair. Why should they be happy when she was not? So, she intended to pull them down to unhappiness with her by doing what she could to make them unhappy too.

I then told her - I did not want to play that game -and get pulled down to unhappiness with you. I reminded her of the tone scale and the purpose of auditing - to move a person UP the tone scale. I said I have a better idea - why dont you come UP the tone scale to where I am and we can both be happy and treat each other right and be friends? She said I like that idea.

Then she asked me if she was a Scientologist. I said which way do you want to go on the tone scale, up or down? She said up. I said - well, thats what its all about, going UP the tone scale, becoming a happier person. She said - well, then Im a Scientologist because I want to go up the tone scale. I said I agree.

I told her that she was mishandled by church ethics because those ethics officers also have their enemy formula out and handle people in such a way as to knock the other persons enemy formula out, instead of getting it in.I said when you leave ethics with the idea you are a bad person - your enemy formula is out and of course you are going to continue committing overts because what else does a bad person do - except commit overts?

I then hatted her a little more on the Overt Motivator Sequence - with her new understanding that she was basically good. Now it made a lot of sense to her.

I taught her that the Overt Motivator sequence is NOT a natural law. Just because someone commits an overt on you, does not mean you have to commit one back on them. In fact, because you are basically good, you are a fool if you do, because now you are going to put yourself in hell.

Ron says the Overt Motivator sequence is THE mental mechanism that makes life on earth hell.

Lets examine why that would be. A being who is basically good but who is committing overts will cave himself in in various ways in the effort to stop himself from committing overts because he really does not like harming others.

Thus when he harms another dynamic he feels bad about having done so. Thus he feels a need to justify the overt to reduce the guilt he feels. So, he levels unwarrented criticism at the dynamic he harmed and thus he also mocks up Motivators. Those motivators really hurt too, because he is using it to JUSTIFY his overt against the other dynamic.

But, ALL justifiers are lies, because what the being is saying is this

It wasnt really an overt because....

That is a lie, no matter what he fills in the blank with, because the truth is - it WAS an overt. And deep down inside himself, even despite his efforts to hide this fact from himself - he secretly knows it was an overt.

And secretly knowing it was an overt - he will now punish himself for having committed it. There are various ways he will punish himself - one way being to mock up a painful motivator that he clutches to his bosom and wont let go of for dear life.

Because he is basically good, he continually seeks to get his ethics in and restrain himself from committing any more overts against that dynamic. Thus you have a decline of his abilities � the result is inabilities and illnesses. These are self-imposed as an effort to prevent himself from committing overts.

If the being finds he still cannot restrain himself from committing overts - his final solution is to leave. The reason he is leaving the area is because he is BASICALLY GOOD. He has concluded that he cannot restrain himself from harming that dynamic so IN ORDER TO PROTECT THAT DYNAMIC FROM ANY MORE HARM BY HIM � he leaves.

That’s his way of putting his ethics in when he concludes that he cannot stop himself from harming that dynamic � he leaves.

All of the above phenomena is PROOF that he is BASICALLY GOOD

1. Justification

. Harming himself with self-imposed inabilities and illnesses

. Leaving an area to protect it from any further harm from him

What I taught this girl was that because she was basically good - that if she committed overts - she would punish herself in the above various ways for having done so. The Overt Motivator sequence is the primary way one descends down the tone scale into unhappiness. Therefore, undoing and rising above this mental mechanism is the way one goes back up the tone scale and remains up.

What I got her to see was that if she comitted an overt - she would then destroy her own happiness, and regardless of how it affects anyone else - she should not commit overts out of her own self interests - to protect herself from destroying herself and sending herself down tone.

In light of the fact that the overt motivator sequence is NOT a natural law - one can rise above this mental mechanism by recognizing this fact � just because someone commits an overt on you - does not mean you have to commit one back on them. In fact, you are a fool if you do - because now you will destroy your own happiness and enter your own self-made hell.

This is where this datum has use -

What is greatness = the ability to love ones fellow man despite all reasons not to.

Ron also said that probably the biggest secret to this universe is love.

Here is how to take an overt off a case and restore love

The definition of responsibility is two ABILITIES.

Ability to admit causation (justification prohibits recognition of having been cause)

Ability to withhold (oneself from committing overts)

So, by getting a person to tell you an overt - you have accomplished nothing for the case because he does not think it was an overt because he has justified it. So, you do not audit overts, you audit justifiers. Why wasnt it an overt is the auditing question. You audit justifiers for an overt until you get the following End Phenomena

The End Phenomena has two statements of recognition.

The person says �

That was a helluva thing to do to Joe - even if it could have been explained.

Yea - I actually did commit an overt there - regardless of any reasons - I hurt Joe.

He also recognizes and says �

There was a point in time there just before I did that to Joe - where I was deciding whether to commit the overt or not - and I decided to do it. Yea - I didnt HAVE to do it - I just decided to.

When you get the above two recognitions - you have taken one overt off the case.

Notice that the above End Phenomena is RESPONSIBILITY.

Ability to withhold

The person has not only recognized that he did in fact harm another, but he OPERATED AT CAUSE in doing so. He did not HAVE to do it - he ELECTED to do it. He can now see that the Overt Motivator sequence is NOT a natural law �

It is only a mental mechanism which he foolishly chooses to employ and the reason he is foolish is because in employing the mental mechanism, he is COVERING UP the fact that he is BASICALLY GOOD and will now punish himself in various ways for having done harm to another dynamic. Thus his ENEMY FORMULA GOES OUT.

In order to commit an overt he has to NOT-IS his and the other being’s basic goodness. Thus he has COVERED UP � Who he really is.

Thus the enemy formula � Find Out Who You Really Are � for people who do harm.

It is especially applicable to those who do constant harm because they have lost ALL of their ability to withhold � meaning restrain themselves from commiting overts.

When his enemy formula goes out, he believes himself and others are bad. He can get into a state wherein he is believing so much that he is bad, that he loses ALL of his ability to WITHHOLD himself from harming others and then you have an SP - a person who harms others all day long every day. He cannot restrain himself at all and has given up even trying to. He has gone into apathy about restraining himself from doing harm.

In this state he has gone completely into agreement with his case, he has become his case, to such a degree that he can no longer see his basic self any more - the being is gone - completely COVERED UP. There is no distance between himself and his case because he is BEING his case.

And so he cannot DIFFERENTIATE between himself and his case and thus get some distance between it and himself and so he confuses all case thoughts as being his thoughts and so he accepts those thoughts as his own thoughts and acts on them. Thus he dramatizes his case and commits overts and harms others regularly. And so his Enemy formula is out and thus his ethics are out.

Getting back to our story with our friends daughter - I hatted her on all of the above.

I spent about 10 hours with her doing all the above and then she went home.

About a month later I got a call from her mother. Her mother asked me - what did you do with my daughter? Nobody here recognizes her anymore, I dont recognize her anymore, she is a totally different person than she has ever been. She has discontinued all criminal relationships she used to have, she no longer takes drugs, she has found all new decent friends, she likes Scientology and goes to the org to do ethics and takes services. What happened?

A final word on the Overt Motivator sequence is that in order to commit an overt, one has to practice Alter-Isness and Not-Isness. He tells himself a lie that the other fellow is bad, thus making it ok to commit the overt. He also will Not-Is his own basic goodness and the other fellow’s basic goodness just before his decision to harm the other fellow. Thus his enemy formula goes out because now he has COVERED UP who he really is and who the other fellow really is.

The famous quote - We have met the enemy and he is us has application here.

The mental mechanism called Overt Motivator sequence, also has a lot to do with freedom and entrapment. Since a being is basically good, he will reduce his abilities if he finds himself acting badly. The Enslavers know and use this against a being, to get him to entrap and enslave himself. They know if they can get him to act badly that he will entrap himself. Thus rising above Overt Motivator sequence is required to attain and maintain freedom. A primary trap, if not the only trap, is getting a being to entrap himself, to hold himself down � and getting him to commit overts would be a prime method of getting him to do this to himself.

The real way you get Ethics in is auditing. Ethics does not get rid of case, auditing does.

All Ethics does is it gets the person to restrain himself from dramatizing his case and thereby committing overts � until he can get auditing on that case and get rid of it.

Let’s say a man has an impulse to kill babies. He uses Ethics to restrain himself from killing babies until he can get auditing to get rid of the impulse to kill babies. Once auditing gets rid of the impulse to kill babies � he no longer has to restrain himself from it because that impulse is now gone � and so now his Ethics are really in. It now takes no effort on his part to be Ethical about babies, it comes naturally because he now has no impulse to harm them.

Both The Tin Drum and Survival in Auschwitz portray evil and malevolence of human actions in certain situations. I remained the three-year-old, the gnome, the Tom Thumb, the pigmy, the Lilliputian, the midget, whom no one could persuade to grow. I did so in order to be exempted from the big and little catechism and in order not, once grown to five-foot-eight adulthood, to be driven by this man who face to face with his shaving mirror called himself by father, into a business, the grocery business, which as Matzerath saw it, would, when Oskar turned twenty-one, become his grownup world. To avoid playing the cash register I clung to my drum and from my third birthday on refused to grow by so much a fingerfs breadth (pg60)

With his physical youthfulness, Oskar manipulates his ignorant mother Agnes to assume that Matzerath was the cause of this unnecessary accident. Egocentric Oskar takes advantage of his mother Agnesfs ignorance and attains his own freedom make decisions autonomously based on his utmost pleasure. This is when Oskar shows the hedonistic Rasputin in him who lacks empathy, sensitivity and even sympathy. Lacking these essential human qualities and because of his insanity, Oskar consequently ends up killing two of his presumptive fathers. During Matzerathfs funeral, Oskar owns up to killing his presumptive father with the Party pin because he gwas sick of dragging a father around with him all his lifeh (pg.404). This exemplifies the indifference and self-centeredness of Oskar and proves how he takes resort to drastic and extreme measures in order for him to survive through all his confrontations.




In Survival in Auschwitz, Levi declares, gcthe Lager that man is bound to pursue his own ends by all possible means, while he who errs but once pays dearlyh (pg.1). The prisoners only have a slight chance of survival, and the risks to escape are almost beyond onefs power. In contrast to Oskarfs self-indulgence, frugality is more apparent. Leading a life of starvation and labour, the prisoners would almost do anything to keep on living, despite the abject conditions to which they were subjected to. Under such conditions, men throw away their morals and act only in accordance to their own desires. Levi recalls,

They hear us speak in many languages, which they do not understand and which sound to them as grotesque as animal noises; they see us reduced to ignoble slavery, without hair, without honor and without names, beaten everyday, more abject everyday, and they never see in our eyes a light of rebellion, or of peace, or of faith. They know us as thieves and untrustworthy, muddy, ragged and starving, and mistaking the effect for the cause, they judge us worthy of our abasement (pg11)

The theft and the sly ways of living the prisoners lead are examples of human loathsomeness and inevitable egocentricity. Oskar also acted in an egocentric way, but it is significantly different to the prisoners because Oskars egocentricity where always based on his desire and greed and that was the way he always got what he wanted. Oskar seems to like evil, and he puts temptations on people and brings out the Rasputin in everyone. Oskar has the time to spare and entertains himself by scoping Jan to see if he steals.

I screamed first into the frosty night that new snow might fall at last, and then into the glass, the dense glass, the precious glass, the cheap glass, the transparent glass, the partitioning glass, the glass between worlds, the virginal, mystical glass that separated Jan Bronski from the ruby necklace, cutting a hole just right for Janfs glove size, which was well known to me. I made the cutout fall inward like a trap door, like the gate of heaven or the gate of hell and Jan did not flinch, his fine leather hand emerged from his coat pocket and moved heavenward; from heaven or hell it removed a necklace whose rubies would have satisfied all the angels in the world, including the fallen. Unlike the prisoners in Survival in Auschwitz, Oskarfs vices are not essential to his survival, and propriety should be available instead. The prisoners in the camps in some circumstances need to steal in order for them to survive such as the spoons and knives to eat their food rations. Although the concept of survival is apparent throughout both books, however, their situations and problems are dramatically different.

Both of the books show amoralism in the characters to reveal what kinds of uncivilized things humans do when confronted with unwanted circumstances. Egocentricity takes over characters in both of the books, but it is also evident that there are more life threatening situations in Survival in Auschwitz and than in The Tin Drum. These inhuman actions make these two books so effective because without them, these two books would just be pitiable, depressing stories where the readers would sympathetic for the characters. The egocentric characters intensify the astonishment and keep the readers interest in the books. The authors, Grass and Levi narrows down and depicts the truths of human nature, that as long as you survive it is acceptable. Morality constitutes the rules of a society to maintain a peaceful society. However, the two books reflect the evil and cruelties of life, and when one notices the iniquities, self-centeredness is the only way to avoid and survive through unwanted situations.

Her position may invoke sympathy from the reader, as Billy seems to act in a condescending manner towards her. His revulsion towards her is evident in his description and the reader may sympathise with her. Billy tries to make up for it “In the morning he will buy her some pretty curtains for the windows and make a proper door and buy her the best dress in the shop.”

When Billy goes to buy a carton of beer for his party, the barman reacts arrogantly and condescendingly towards him and seems prejudiced towards aboriginal people. “You cheeky bastard” is retorted by the barman when Billy stands up for himself when insulted. His insults are racially motivated and he is bigoted towards Billy because of the colour of his skin.




The barman’s coarse language and racial insults creates bad feeling in the reader and he is instantly disliked by the reader. The unfairness and rudeness of his accusations make him a dislikeable character and the reader would most probably side with Billy. His acceptance of Darcy softens the blow, although it was only because Darcy acted dumb to make the barman feel superior.

The policemen enters the story towards the end of it, and arrests Billy for the alleged theft of the watch. He arrests him quickly and happily because of the colour of his skin and his family name. “You bastards stick together like flies on a dunny wall”. He like the barman is prejudiced, “you black prick”, against blacks and finds joy in arresting Billy. “You mongrel black bastard, I’m going to make you and your fucking brother jump,” before he can prove his innocence.

Again, the unfairness of his actions and his prejudice against aborigines results in an immediate dislike by the reader towards him.

. “White people are to blame for problems facing aboriginal people in contemporary society”

The whole plotline of the story is that Billy is coming home after travelling out into the big city full of white people, adapting to their world, becoming one of them and then returning to his original home a different person.

He is a distant from the entire aboriginal community, having been surrounded by white people for the last 5 years and is only returning because his guilty conscience affected him at footy game “a young part aboriginal opponent stared at him the whole game with large, scornful black eyes seeing right through him.”

It seems that white people are to blame for all the problems that the aboriginal community in the story have to face. Billy Woodward’s father had died when he had drunken methylated spirits and then was hit by a truck. Without the white peoples interference with the aborigines way of life, Billy’s father would have probably have drunken water instead of methylated spirits as alcohol was introduced by white people, and then he wouldn’t have been hit by the truck, which were also introduced and probably driven by a white person.

The introduction of white civilisation to the aboriginal community caused many of the aborigines to forget their traditional customs and try to adjust to the white customs. The results are seen in the story as Billy’s aboriginal family is living in ‘poverty’ they have forgotten how to provide for themselves as aborigines did generations before them and as a result are living in poor housing and dirty living conditions “a rickety shape of nailed down tin and sheets of iron.

The package and newspaper help define the three-dimensional view. The part that you inhale through the pipe helps set the line and completes the pipe and definition.

Shape is also a very important element used in this painting. By looking at the painting, I could see the shape at the base of the pipe. From the colors and textures apart from the base of the table. The pipe has more of a geometric shape. The tobacco package in the middle of the table is using up mass in the painting.

I think there is a variety of texture being used. First, the actual textures in the painting is the table, newspaper, and the long end of the pipe. There smooth and we could feel them by touching. The simulated textures in the painting would be the opened end of the tobacco package, the tobacco at the end of the pipe, and the pipe in general. It looks real, but if we would touch it, it would feel like smooth paint.




By looking at this picture, I found that it had a lot of linear perspective and atmospherical perspective. This painting has a foreground, middle ground, and a background. The newspaper appears closer in the foreground and they tend to decrease in size and vanish off into the background. There is a lot of wide variety of color and detail in the foreground of this painting which is also known as atmospherical perspective. Because the changing of color, value, and detail gives it an illusion of depth.

By observing and studying this picture, I also found that a variety of colors are being used throughout the painting. Color is mostly being used in the middle of the painting. The colors are light blue, cream, yellow, brown, and dark brown. The light blue is a nice contrast compared to all the dark colors.

There is also a lot of emphasis and subordination that is being used throughout this painting. The figure that drew my attention to this picture was the pipe leaning up against the tobacco box. This is a form called focal point. I think the newspaper was a subordination. It helped create a neutral area of lesser interest that kept me from being distracted from areas of less emphasis.

Movement is also another key aspect in this painting. Movement is occurring from the bottom of the painting to the top. The pipe extending from the bottom left to all the way back to the top right. Directional force is causing me to look from the bottom of the picture to the top.

By looking at this painting, I have come to the conclusion that this is a form of representational art. Most of William Harnett’s paintings are personally expressive. I don’t know what the meaning of this painting means, but I’m guessing it’s representing a place to relax.
