Enrolling in Empire State College has been the greatest choice I ever made. It was back in the fall of 00 that I became a student at the College on recommendation by Prof. Blanco Diaz at Technical Career Institutes (TCI). The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is the story of moral corruption by the means of aestheticism. In the novel, the well meaning artist Basil Hallward presets young Dorian Gray with a portrait of himself. After conversing with cynical Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian makes a wish which dreadfully affects his life forever. If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! For that I would give everything! Yes, there is nothing in the whole world I would not give! I would give my soul for that (Wilde 10). Basil Hallwards aestheticism is manifested in his dedication to his artistic creations. He searches in the outside world for the perfect manifestation of his own soul, when he finds this object, he can create masterpieces by painting it (Bloom 10). He refuses to display the portrait of Dorian Gray with the explanation that, I have put too much of myself into it (Wilde 106). He further demonstrates the extent to which he holds this philosophy by later stating that, only the artist is truly reveled (10). Lord Henry Wotton criticizes Basil Hallward that, An artist should create beautiful things but should put nothing of his own life into them (Wilde 5). Basil is an artist who uses a brush while Wotton is an artist who uses words There is no good, no evil, no morality and immorality;there are modes of being. To live is to experiment aesthetically in living to experiment all sensations, to know all emotions, and to think all thoughts, in order that the selfs every capacity may be imaginatively realized (West 5811). Lord Henry believes that, it is better to be beautiful than to be good (Wilde 15). Although he attests that aestheticism is a mode of thought, he does not act on his beliefs. Lord Henry presents Dorian with the tenants of his New Hedonism, whose basis is self-development leading to the perfect realization of ones nature (Eriksen 7). If Lord Henrys aesthetic ideas have validity ,Dorian Grays portrait should not become ugly, but rather more beautiful. Since the picture becomes loathsome, it is evident that Lord Henrys beliefs are untrue (West 5811). Dorian becomes so disgusted with the horrible portrait that he slashes the canvas, and the knife pierces his own heart. Because Lord Henry is responsible for influencing Dorian Gray, he is partly the cause of the death of Dorian (5810). While Lord Henry is indirectly the cause of Dorians death, he too causes his own downfall. Lord Henry changes Dorian with the belief that morals have no legitimate place in life. He gives Dorian a book about a man who seeks beauty in evil sensations. Both Lord Henrys actions and thoughts prove ruinous, as his wife leaves him and the remaining focus of his life, youthful Dorian Gray, kills himself in an attempt to further the lifestyle suggested to him by Lord Henry. Eventually, he is left destitute, without Dorian, the art he so cherishes, because he tried to mold it, as dictated by aestheticism. Of all the protagonists, Dorians downfall is the most clearly recognized. A young man who was pure at the beginning of the novel becomes depraved by the influence of Lord Henry. Looking for Alibrandi is a novel which mostly deals with the concept of emotional change. Through a number of characters, the author, Melina Marchetta demonstrates clearly the concept of change and changing perspective. A variety of events happen throughout the novel to these characters which influence their lives and change their perspectives. Through these events Marchetta shows that change and change of perspective can be triggered by certain events and experiences, it can be gradual, it is a natural part of growing up, every person faces their own perspectives and that adolescence is a time of rapid change.


A key event in the novel that changes Josephine Alibrandi’s perspective is the meeting of her father, Michael Andretti. Initially, before Josephine has never even met Michael, she resents him. She feels that he abandoned her mother while she was pregnant. When she first meets him however she gets the impression that he is intelligent and a decent human being, though she doesn’t make it known to him. After Josephine gets into a fight at school with Carly Bishop, Carly’s father threatens legal action. In the spur of the moment, Josephine says her father is a lawyer and he is called up and asked to come to the school. Unexpectedly, he arrives and the issue is resolved. As Josephine is walking along side her father, it is at this moment when she has a change of perspective. She likes the feeling of having a father figure. Marchetta has demonstrated that change can be triggered by singular events.


Michael Andretti also faces a similar change in perspective of his daughter. When Michael first discovers that Josephine is his daughter he says, “I do not want to see her. I do not want to love her. I do not want a complication in my life.” He is very negative and does not want to have anything to do with her. As the novel progresses, Josephine and Michael begin to bond together and enjoy each other’s company. Michael faces a change in his perspective on fatherhood. He is at first in denial and does not want anything to do with Josie, but as certain events unfold, he wants to become a big part of her life and get to know what he has missed out on. Michael’s change in perspective is a gradual one.


Another major change in perspective seen in the novel is Josephine’s view of her own identity. Initially, Josephine believes that her appearance and ethnic background is the determining factor in her social acceptance. She also believes that because she is at a wealthy school on a scholarship and has no father she is looked down upon. When Josephine is told by a teacher at her school, Sister Louise that she was actually voted school captain but was given the role of vice captain because they felt she lacked the leadership skills and that her and her friends are in fact trendsetters within the school looked upon with envy, she has a sudden change in perspective on herself. She has always lacked self esteem and was very conscious of what others thought of her, but now has realised she is actually one of the most popular girls in school which is a great confidence boost for her. At that moment, Josephine says, “I knew deep down that I was wrong and I think that my emancipation began at that moment.”

Also on the theme of identity is Josephine’s culture and her change in perspective of it. This is a more gradual change than her the perspective on herself, though there is one particular event which really makes her think about her culture. Marchetta also demonstrates that having increased knowledge and knowing all the facts can bring about a change in perspective. A number of events occur in the novel, which illustrate this. A prime example is when Josephine discovers that her father, Michael Andretti did not run away from her mother, Christina because she was pregnant. Josephine had resented her father her whole life because she believed this was the reason, but she finds out he did not even know Christina was pregnant at the time when he and his family moved to Adelaide, in fact, he didn’t even know that he had a daughter until recently. This drastically changes the way that Josephine sees her father. Another example of a change in perspective due to increased knowledge is her perspective of her grandmother, known as “Nonna.” She discovers that she was in an arranged marriage to someone she did not know and that she fell pregnant with an Australian, Marcus Sanford. After gaining the facts, Josephine realises that her Nonna isn’t as bad as she had initially thought. She comes to realise that she is only human, and in many ways, as a young woman was similar to herself.


Melina Marchetta helps to shape our view on the concept of change and changing perspective through a variety of different events. It is demonstrated that change can be both a positive or negative thing and that every person faces their own changes throughout their lives. By showing change through a couple of characters, Marchetta also shows that change and changing perspectives can be dealt with in different ways by different people.

It is their belief that when ranchers alone are forced to bear the cost of the loss of livestock due to the recovery effort of the wolf, it causes animosity and ill will which can lead to the illegal killing of the wolf.


In a recent lawsuit that was filed on behalf of the Ranchers by the American Farm Bureau, the U.S. District Court ruled that William Babbit, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director, “exceeded the authority of the Endangered Species Act when he launched the wolf reintroduction program.” The Farm Bureau tried to tell Babbit that, “bringing the gray wolves into the Yellowstone area posed a threat to area ranchers and their livestock.” Rick Krause, assistant counsel for the American Farm Bureau explains, “This is a major decision, in a sense tells the government and other people that you cannot do whatever you want to do under the Endangered Species Act.” The gray wolf is not threatened by extinction. What is threatened, however, is the livestock of western ranchers.” (V.O. Agriculture pg.1)


Another problem is the exorbitant cost of implementing the reintroduction program. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, the estimated cost of the program to date is roughly $1,000,700. Their future now looks promising. But we must step back and allow nature to do the rest.

After output where marginal cost is greater than marginal revenue, total cost is increasing more quickly than total revenue and therefore profits are declining.


Profit - at the profit maximizing output average cost (which includes normal profit) is below average revenue and therefore the firm is making supernormal profits equal to the shaded area in the diagram.


The firms short run supply curve will be its (short run) marginal cost curve. A supply curve relates quantity to marginal cost.


Long Run Equilibrium of the Firm


In the long run if typical firms are making economic profits, new firms will be attracted into the industry or existing firms will increase the scale of their operations. The industry supply curve will shift to the right, leading to a fall in price. Supply will go on increasing and price falling until firms are only making normal profits. This will be where the demand curve for the firm touches the lowest point of its average cost curve. This can be seen in the diagram below.





In the long run if the price falls below the average cost of producing the good (P), then firms will make a loss and will leave the industry. If firms leave the industry supply will decrease and the price will rise until firms are just making normal profit - that is where the demand curve touches the lowest point of the average cost curve. Therefore under perfect competition output will always tend towards this long run equilibrium.


Long run equilibrium is therefore where AR = MR = MC = AC


Shut Down Point


We can find the short run break even price and the short run shut down price by comparing the price with average variable total costs. Profit maximization occurs where MC=MR. Since the average total costs (ATC) includes all the relevant opportunity costs, this equilibrium is the short run break even point where normal profits (zero economic profits are being made). As the price falls the firm will carry on producing but be making below normal profit. However, if the price falls below the average variable costs then it will not be worth the firm producing any longer as they will be making a loss larger than their fixed costs. The shut down point therefore comes when average revenue is equal to average variable cost.

Until about the age of where one begins to make decisions without help is where one can turn in any direction they please. When in school, one has the ability to think of what kind of life is wanted whether it consists of the future with many turns or fixed in one single direction. Without a doubt, at this moment I am beginning to make those wise decisions whether my life will be fixed or filled with turns, and hopefully with the decisions I make that will determine the destiny I will live.

Whilst the issue of hypocrisy is rife in the Sheridan’s comedy and invariable evokes laughter even amongst the most serious of literary critics, one cannot help but feel that the inconsistency between the words and actions of both the older and younger generations of Sheridan’s characters, are more a tool of satire, rather than mere instruments to purely create humour and therefore, to generate laughter.


In his obviously satirical play on the social conventions of Georgian England, Sheridan derides the hypocrisy, as well as highlights the futility of authoritarian parental control and domination. He also decries the farcical display of insincere submission of members of the younger generation in their foolish attempts at manipulation of their elders as a tool of deception for personal gain.

Most evidently, Sheridan exposes the hypocrisy of the older generatin in the light of their expectation of their young to conform to social norms, norms that they themselves are unwilling to conform to.

Passion is of no service, you impudent, insolent, overbearing reprobate!…I give you six hours and a half to consider of this if you then agree, without any condition, to do everything on earth that I choose… I may in time forgive you � If not… I’ll disown you, I’ll disinherit you…”


to which Jack says to himself ,


“I wonder what old wealthy hag it is that he wants to bestow on me! � yet he himself married for love…”


Similarly, in the area of courtship, the older generation also demand that the younger ones comply to the kind of restraint laid down by their elders. Yet, the elders are themselves unable to exercise the same kind of restraint that they impose on their young. Lydia’s aunt Mra Malaprop for instrance, hypocritically confines her niece in order to prevent her seeing Ensign Beverley. In this regard, Lydia Languish tells her cousin Julia Melville,


“…my whole connection with Beverley.. my aunt has discovered our intercourse.. and has confined me ever since! � Yet would you believe it? She has fallen absolutely in love with a tall Irish baronet.. She really carries on a kind of correspondence with him, under a feigned name…a Delia or a Celia.. Since she has discovered her own frailty, she is become more suspicious of mine.”


In the light of hypocrisy of the younger generation, Sheridan exposes their use of deception for personal gain. Jack manipulates his father to deceive the latter as to his real purpose for coming to Bath � to court Lydia, not the reason that Jack gives his father which is as a part of his military duty. Before Sir Anthony arrives, Jack says to himself,





“I hope he has heard nothing of the business that has brought me here. I wish the gout had held him fast in Devonshire, with all my soul.”


Yet, when Sir Anthony meets him, Jack hypocritically says,


“Sir, I am delighted to see you here, and looking so well!”


He also deceptively manipulates his father after hearing that Sir Anthony has chosen for him the very same girl he has been courting. Jack carries out this deception via hypocrisy in order to achieve personal ends of lengthening the courtship process so as to give Lydia the elopement she desires.


“Why then, Sir, the result of my reflection is a resolution to sacrifice every inclination of my own to your satisfaction…if I please you in this affair, ‘tis all I desire.”


Jack also deceives Mrs Malaprop by manipulating her via hypocritical flattery in order to achieve the personal gain of seeing Lyida.





“Permit me to say, Madam, that as I never yet have had the pleasure of seeing Miss Languish, my principal inducement in this affair at present, is the honour of being allied to Mrs Malaprop; of whose intellectual accomplishment, elegant manners, and unaffected learning, no tongue is silent.”


The older generation’s use of hypocrisy is also to exert control and domination over the younger generation. This is seen in both Mrs Malaprop and Sir Lucius O’Trigger’s dealing with the younger generational characters like Lydia, Lucy and Bob Acres.


Mrs Malaprop attempts to exert control and dominate Lydia’s reading material. She then justifies her actions to Sir Anthony by hypocritically explaining that a young woman





“…above all…should be mistress of orthodoxy (pronounciation), that she might not misspell, and mispronounce words so shamefully as girls usually do; and likewise that she might reprehend (comprehend) the true meaning of what she is saying.”


This humorously reeks of hypocrisy as Mrs Malaprop herself constantly mispronounces her words and does not appear to know how to use the right words for the right situation.


Sir Lucius attempts to control and dominate Lucy even when he is courting Mrs Malaprop disguised as Celia. He tries to steal kisses from her by telling Lucy to tell her mistress that she has been kissed fifty times by Lucius. When Lucy protests that this was a lie, Lucius shamelessly tries to make it a reality by attempting to kiss Lucy as many times.


“Ah then, you baggage! I’ll make it a truth presently.”


Hypocrisy is displayed in Lucius’ character through this shameless attempt to romance Celia (whom he perceives to be Lydia) and unfaithfully kiss her servant at the same time.


Sir Lucius also attempts (and very nearly succeeds) to manipulate Bob Acres into fighting a duel with Ensign Beverley by hypocritically reminding Acres to “consider (his) honour”. Yet, in his shameless attempt to steals kisses from the servant girl Lucy, honour is something that Lucius most certainly lacks.


Mrs Malaprop displays hypocrisy in her initial unwillingness to intervent to prevent the duel between Jack Absolute and Bob Acres so as to preserve the life of Lydia’s lover.





“O fie - it would be very inelegant in us we should only participate (precipitate) things.”


Yet, when she learns that her own lover Sir Lucius is involved as well, she immediately swings into action because of the perceived personal gain to herself if her lover survives.





“Why, fly with the utmost felicity to be sure, to prevent mischief here, friend � you can show us the place?”


In conclusion , the issue of hypocrisy as highlighted by both generations of Sheridan’s characters, display the typical dramatic tension that arises as each attempts to manipulate the other in order to benefit themselves. Sheridan cleverly brings this to the audience’s attention in his attempt to satirise the social conventions of his epoch.
