In the five verses shared of Lao Tzu, all said the unsayable. Tzu was very flat out as to how he felt about language. Verse fifty-six stated, “Those who know do not talk. Those who talk do not know.” His attitude is that language is best expressed when nothing is said at all. Thoughts and knowing rather than speaking should be the language of man. Tzu thinks one should endeavor to do nothing, meaning not to literally do nothing, but to discover and follow the natural forces -- to follow and shape the flow of events and not to battle oneself against the natural order of things. One should first and foremost be spontaneous in one’s actions. Tzu believes plans that are created to get results never accomplish the aims they were meant to obtain.
In verse twenty-three, Tzu questions, “If heaven and earth cannot make things eternal, how is it possible for man?” Tzu is questioning whether or not heaven and earth are in fact real and present. If they cannot make things eternal, how can they exist for man? Tzu has an attitude that one should always question and wonder, rather than know and speak. Ultimately, Tzu stresses simplicity. Looking further into Tzu’s works, I discovered his book of poetry, Tao Te Ching. The word “Tao” is Chinese for “the Way”, and in the books opening poem, Lao Tzu states, “The Tao that can be spoken of is not the real Tao.” He is saying that Tao is the knowledge and the questioning; you cannot put the Tao into words. Tao is the way of thought.
Since Tzu’s attitude toward the language of man is clear and simple, why did he write at all? Tzu was justified and very wise in his ways. His language should have been written as it was to make it known to man that it is alright to question and wonder and contemplate upon life and existence. Without questioning and unknowing, one cannot be satisfied in life. Tzu’s attitude is to not speak, but to always question.
