Green

In F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s The Great Gatsby there are many symbolic themes. One of the most prevalent of the themes is color, and the color that stands out the most is green. The color green is represented in the many thought patterns, attitudes, and choices that the characters make during the book. Jay Gatsby, a rich self-made man, is influenced by the color green more than anything else in the story.

Throughout the story the color green shows the many choices that Gatsby has made during his life. One example of the green symbolism is the green light at the end of the dock near Daisy’s house. In this instance the color green represents perfection because to Gatsby Daisy is perfect. It could also be seen as a warning to Gatsby telling him not to go after Daisy because his chance has already passed for her love, and he should leave it as it is. This is shown when Nick states, “He had come a long way to his blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him… ”(18).

In another way, although it is contradictory to the first, green could symbolize the action “to go”. This could mean that Gatsby shouldn’t sit back and only wonder what his life would be like but to go for it. It shows that Gatsby and Daisy are meant for each other and that no one or anything should stand in his way in accomplishing his goal. It tells Gatsby if he accomplishes his goal it will bring him happiness, but to achieve his goal he cannot stop. He hopes to recreate what he had in the past by only pushing on through the future. Gatsby says, ““I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before,” he said nodding determinedly, “She’ll see.”” (117).
