The Seventh Seal


This movie was very interesting, and I think I might have a different perspective then most people have. Now that I have said that, this is how I analyzed the motion picture “ The Seventh Seal.”


Obviously this movie was about death, from the opening scene, you find a Knight laying on a beach with a chess board. The board was set up, black vs. White, I think that had to symbolize black being death, and white meaning heaven, or God. I felt like the director was trying to focus on the Knight through out the whole movie. To me it seemed that the Knight was the only one, not afraid of death. In the movie, death was scaring everyone on earth, but to him it gave him no fear. He looked at death almost as if he had nothing to lose. To the Knight, it was almost as if him, and death we’re playing a game. I feel like the Knight, and death might have already incountered one another in the past. I think death might have taken someone close to the Knight, and it was time for the Knight to get even. Through out the movie, the Knight and death play a game of chess. Every time they play, the Knight is so confident in what he’s doing. He’ very focused, but he’s also almost looking through death. The Knight really never pay’s much attention to the game, I feel like the Knight is looking past him into the future. He never really panics, or really cares to much about the game. I think the Knight was just using the game of chess, more for a distraction. I say this because at the end of the movie, Death has the Knight in check mate on his next move. The Knight then knocks over the pieces, distracting death just long enough for a family to get away. Yes death might have beat him in the game of chess, but he did not beat the Knight in the game of life. I think the director was trying to show that, evil never prevails. I thought that the Knight was trying to get even with death, and beat him at his own game. That is how I viewed this movie. It was an amazing movie, and this is how I saw it through my eyes.
