Views 1 Slave Culture”

Slavery differed for men and women. They were treated differently because of gender dissimilarities. Men were subjected more to field work, whereas women were used for domestic purposes, like household duties and rearing children. Frederick Douglass “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave” narrates his autobiography with a description on how men were treated, being a man himself. And Harriet Jacob’s “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” tells a woman perspective. Douglass and Jacobs share the tough reality of being a piece of property while being born into different families and having their gender shape their slave experience.

Every individual needs love in order to grow into a healthy human being. Douglass was taken away from his family at an early age, as do many children. Families are torn apart when they are sold. Eventually down the sale line Douglass was passed down from master to master without ever having a close family connection. His mother did visit him at a young age during the night, but that was not enough to create a bond. Douglass reinforces this idea by stating that families were separated to “hinder the development of the child’s affection towards its mother, and to blunt and destroy the natural affection of the mother for the child”.

Jacobs does have memories of being cared for as a child. She lived with her grandma after her mother died. She had been a slave since she gave her first breath, although it was unknown to her until she was six years old. At least Jacobs had somewhat of a childhood, compared to Douglass. Children are sold and traded like a piece of cloth. Jacobs was sold to a girl younger than herself. Girls slaves were most likely to be used as a toy to any slave owner. Masters raped their slaves and thought of their children as profit. Even though the town knew that these children had a white father due to the color of their skin, they never mentioned names. In fact, slaves were prohibited from revealing the fathers identity. Jacobs, like many girl slaves, encountered being raped and treated as slave objects. She begun hearing obscene remarks from her master at the tender age of 15.

On the other hand, boys are put to work young, as the word child labor” was inexistent. Being a slave meant that you were someone’s property and therefore did everything commanded of you, despite age. And if that meant getting beating till you almost died, then so be it. Douglass encountered many beatings as he was passed down from master to master. He may not have encountered the horrors of being raped like Jacobs, but he did find pain in physical and psychological abuse. Slaves were tortured to the point of death. It was lawful to kill one’s own property. Douglass mentions that it was a common to say “that it is worth half- cent to kill a ‘n’ and a half-cent to bury one”.

Slaves were treated inhumanly. Food was thrown at the floor like animals when it was the children’s turn to eat. Jacobs and Douglass both mentioned how the elderly slaves were treated. Just as an old rag, they were just left to fend for themselves. Being a slave and senior citizen was a bad combination. Nowadays, families take care of their elders, but during slavery families were separated and some individuals were left wondering if their kin were alive. Douglass’s quote “ slavery proved as injurious to whites as it did for slaves themselves”. One of the mistresses he had, turned from a sweet, nurturing lady to a mean owner. The power to own someone takes away from one’s morals and values.

Jacobs and Douglass also mention how masters tried to keep a good face in the community. Even though slaves were treated horribly, many masters tried to hide their sufferings. Jacobs for instance was not allowed to speak of her masters advance towards her. Douglass turned on his master and fought back whenever he had the chance. Instead of taking him to court and get a beating for disrespect, his master fought back but was quite about the incident. If a slave had the nerve to treat the master like that, then the master would be ridiculed because he was unable to control his slaves. Masters were also compared between slaves. Douglass mentions that “it is not uncommon for slaves even to fall out and quarrel among themselves about the relative goodness of their masters, each contending for the superior goodness of his own over that of the others”. Many slaves saw other slaves hardships and imagined that their fate had been worse. It was better for them to think that another slave was going through a more difficult time, in order for themselves to deal with their misery.

Slaves were lied to many times. There was no need to keep a promise because no owner could have been held responsible for it. Jacobs grandmother was promised that she would be set free when her mistress died. When than event occurred, the mistress’s family took charge of her and decided that her freedom was no longer existent. Slaves were sold whenever a master could get a good price. New Year’s day was a worse day for slaves. It was a day in which slaves were up for sale, and families cringed at the thought of being separated. Jacobs story coincided with Douglass’s in that the reader sees how important family is and how sad it was to know that they can be taken from you in an instant. Nowadays, we do not worry about working to save money to buy a family member. Family is around free of charge.

Jacobs had the privilege of not having to go through physical abuse, even though she did suffer a lot. A lot of her suffering was that of any woman. Her mistress accused her of having an affair with her husband, the master. She underwent jealous rages and humiliating scenarios. And just like any other woman, she fell in love. Unfortunately, she could not hold that relationship because she was indeed a slave.

They both knew that this could not go on. They wanted a better living; who wants to be a slave anyway? Even though Jacobs was not free in the end of the essay, she wanted to run away to the North and she eventually did. Douglass did in fact run away and was free. Their story, as well as others, should be known due to injustices society created. Their determination to change was shown in their learning to read. But even with all this Douglass finishes his essay with “I felt myself a slave and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down”, even after he had escaped and was free. With their two views, one can see one culture; the culture of an injustice that was gratefully over and done with.

Castlereagh, Robert Stuart, Viscount 1768-18

Many things happened during the French revolution that other countries did not agree with. For example abolishing the monarchy led to wars, resulting in may casualties. During these times the Britain has always been against France and continually attempts to stop France from expanding its territory and gaining power. One man who tried to stop the French using diplomacy instead of violence was Lord Viscount Castlereagh.

Castlereagh was born in Dublin, Ireland on 18 June 176 into a well off family. He was the only surviving child of his fathers first marriage to Sarah Frances. Later on he studied at Cambridge University and began his political career in 170 when he returned at the general election for Co. Down, the seat which his father had held from 1771 till 178. He was again elected for the county in 177. During this year a fellow statesman William Pitt gave Castlereagh the title of Lord Castlereagh and appointed him as his Irish chief secretary. During this time there were uprisings in Ireland because of religious conflicts and Lord Castlereagh assisted in stopping the uprising. He agreed with Pit that the best way of dealing with these uprisings was to unite with Britain (Catholic Emancipation). The king during this time disagreed with this idea but gave in and named Henry Addington to become his prime minister. Pitt and Castlereagh did not want to serve under him and resigned. The Act of Union in 1800 affected the Irish parliament by dissolving it and forming the Parliament of the United Kingdom. In 180 he accepted Addington’s offer to return to the cabinet. Addington later resigned and was replaced by William Pitt; Castlereagh was now giving the post of Secretary for War. Castlereagh left office in 1807 but five years later the new Prime Minister, Lord Liverpool, appointed Castlereagh as his foreign secretary. During this time Castlereagh was trying to stop Napoleon and represented Britain in the congress of Vienna. Castlereagh worked for the establishment of the United Netherlands and the German Confederation. He liked the idea of an independent Poland but was required to accept a repartitioning of that country. Castlereagh helped to organize the successful final coalition against Napoleon. In 1815 the British defeated France at the Battle of Waterloo which resulted in the abdication of Napoleon and improved the public standing of Castlereagh. He advocated a moderate peace settlement for France, including restoration of the Bourbon monarchy and the limitation of France to her pre-war boundaries. Later on after Napoleons exile to St. Helena, the parliament wanted to reduce the taxes on the people to prevent radical thinking to be reborn again. Instead a mass of people met in Manchester on August 16 181. To prevent another mass meeting the government proposed social reform, and therefore Lord Castlereagh introduced the 6 acts

Drug abuse has been an ongoing problem that has plagued America. The ramped use of illegal drugs impacts our society in many ways. Drug abuse attributes to increases in violent crime, poverty, domestic violence, HIV, school drop out rate, homelessness, teen pregnancy, and increasing health costs due to health related problems.

Since the beginning of the 1th century America has had a problem with drug abuse. During this time, morphine, cocaine, and heroin, were commonly used like aspirin is today. By the time the twentieth century cam along our nation was dealing with its first problem of increasing drug use. The use of opium became ramped in the United States as well. Eventually the government began to recognize the problem and put laws in place to regulate drug use (Carroll, 00). By the time of World War II was in existence, drug abuse had basically come to a halt, and was not an issue as it was previously.

That all changed with the onset of the 160s. Marijuana and psychedelics were popular in the 160s and was more widely accepted. Because of this newly, wide spread use, the government began to create federal agencies to aggressively enforce the federal laws that were in existence. These laws were put in place to regulate illegal drug use. Soon after the 170s were here and so was cocaine. During the 170s cocaine use was considered the drug of choice, it also brought along with it a new surge of violent crimes and increased addiction.

There are many different factors in our society that have contributed to the support of drug abuse and drug use. One such reason is the need to satisfy our want of mental stimulation audio/ visually.

People are surrounded, by items meant to grasp, or stimulate their attention. In todays society we are often stimulated by audio and visual stimulants. For example, the vast variety of video games, computers, television, DVDs, and CDs, are all geared to satisfy our desire for audio/visual pleasure. With all these items and so many varieties to choose from, the American public soon becomes desensitized by the over stimulation to the senses. Many of our children are bombarded with this type of mental stimulation and they soon become bored. The only other alternative to generate excitement is the use of drugs.

Still others are finding it necessary to seek some type of religious experience and therefore are motivated to become closer to a higher power. There has always been a desire to find the meaning of life or to gain a deeper understanding of oneself and purpose in life. Some people feel so strongly about this that they resort to chemical substances in order to comprehend the world of the supernatural. Chemical substances that are psychoactive are usually used to achieve the desired state of being. Still others resort to using methods of fasting or subjecting the body to a rigorous test of endurance.

Alcoholism is another problem that ranks highly in our nation of substance abuse. Traditional treatment for alcohol abuse usually involves a twelve -step program at a licensed treatment center. The use of psychedelic drugs has been used as a form of treatment for alcoholism. Our society is filled with elements, which are motivating factors for alcohol abuse. People who are heavy drinkers or abusers of alcohol do usually due to some form of anxiety. “ Views on the amount of alcohol consumed correlated positively with anxiety created by various cultural circumstances. Anxiety contributes to alcoholic addiction in America (Jennings, 00).”

A great number of individuals are motivated by the need to find relief from psychological problems or personal problems. Other reasons which motivate the use of drugs are mental disorders which may have to be treated with a narcotic to eleviate the symptoms of the disorder. Our culture through the various forms of the media has glamourized drug use. This image of acceptance contradict the anti-drug messages that the youth of this country are being exposed to, through school, and advertisement paid for by anti-drug organizations. Teenagers have shown an increase in drug usage base on a study done by various government agencies and anti-drug organizations.Even though most teenagers have been well informed of the health risks and dangers of drug abuse, many still make a personal choice to use them.

A study was done by NIDA, (National Institute on Drug Abuse),released on July 1,00, which found a correlation between teen drug use and health issues occurring in early adult years. The study concluded that young adults in their twenties who had used drugs in their teens developed more health problems than those who had not ever used drugs. The type of problems these young adults experienced were sinus infections, colds, and similar respiratory problems. In addition they also had problems focusing, remembering, learning disabilities, plus, headaches, dizziness, and problems with their site. The study included over 600 young people and was done over a period of years. This study reaffirms and supports the facts, stating there are long-term health risks with drug abuse and drug use (NIDA, 00). Other studies have been done that report a large number of the mentally ill, use drugs or alcohol. Combing mental illness and substance abuse makes it difficult to treat an individual for their mental problems. For the mental health community, the rise in substance abuse has created new challenges in the treatment of mental illness. One major complication that arises, is the difficulty in diagnosing a person’s mental condition.

American young people are using chemical substances in great numbers. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (April 00), published the national results of the Monitoring the Future, annual survey. The survey is a report of students in 8th, 10th, and 1th grades and their current trends in drug use. The results indicated a decline in many illicit drugs, especially ecstasy. There was a significant decrease in smoking and drinking for all grades. Among 1th graders, an increase in tranquilizers and barbituates was reported.

There is an ongoing emergence of new drugs in 00, that are popular among teens. Included in this trend is an appearance of drugs coming back, that were popular in the 160s, like LSD, for example. Most young people today are not familiar with the side effects and health risks of LSD. New drugs such as nitrite inhalants, PCP, Rohypnol, GHB, and ectasy are increasing in use.

America will continue to struggle with the task of eliminating substance abuse. Studies conducted by the federal government and anti-drug organizations, will gauge the changes in current drug trends. It is apparent that research indicates a significant substance abuse epidemic within the young American community. According to the NIDA (April 00), 5% of our youth have experiemented with illegal drugs by their 1 grade graduation. 57% of 1 graders have tried cigarettes, 7% currently smoke regularly. 78% of teens have tried alcohol, and 47% have done so by the 8th grade.

Have there been decreases in drug use? Yes, there have been; along with the increase of new drugs. America has seen some positive trends with substance abuse, but how significant are these changes? Teenagers must constantly be made aware of the long term health risks of drug use.

Establishing a global university supported by all nations would be beneficial in several respects with the continuing trend of globalization; many problems-which include disparity between the rich and poor, international crimes exploiting lax visa requirements and low enforcement, relentless threat of terror, and depletion of the ozone layers- once limited to a few countries, if not a single one, are growing global as a byproduct of falling border which results from the ease of international travel and the increase of international relations, be it a political one, or a business one.

International institutions-such as UN and WTO-founded for the purpose of association and cooperation over the issue involving many countries and the common good of the world, hold a meeting where delegations of each country, mainly consisting of each nation¡¯s leaders, voice their opinions. Unfortunately, international negotiations often reach a deadlock, polarized and paralyzed among the participants. Take, for example, the frustrating result of the round which was supposed to address the issues of greatest interest to developing countries. The bill was carefully crafted over several months was rejected by super powers in the world, which manifests the chronic problem of international conference that rich countries are reluctant to spend their national revenue for the purpose not directly related to their interests while poor countries are skeptical about the sincere efforts to resolve problems from the part of rich countries.

Developing a global university-which encourages its students to delve into social problems - would suggest a solution to the limit of international institutions. Most of the international problems require not only thorough knowledge ranging from the domestic situation to the interaction between nations, but also skill of debating and compromising. To the contrary of politicians, who always pursue the nation¡¯s interests, the students would be relatively free from obsession of economic interests and approach the problems from diverse directions. Moreover, when it comes to the responsibility of university, which is meeting the demand of reality and preparing for the future, the global university would be apotheosis of contributing education.

One might argue that the global university would not turn in tangible results as the activity of students are unlikely to wield power in the real political arena. I would argue, however, that the students would grow up to be world leaders and eventually change the mood of international relations into more cooperative one, availing themselves of training and experience from the global university. Of course, to achieve the success of the project, it would be require circumspect preparations; what proportions of support would each country assume? ; who would consist of faculty members? ; what would be the curriculum? Just as a school is considered a place for welfare of a society, the global university would serve as a good investment for the world.

And DONT give me that there are too many children in orphanages bullshit, because in first-world countries there are WAITING LISTS for newborns. Its only the older kids that have problems getting adopted, and children dont pop out of the womb at age 6. I understand how women say Its my body, I can do what I want with it, and theyd be absolutely 100% right if it was ONLY their body involved. But its not just the womans body, theres another living human being involved as well. Killing it is murder. If you dont want it, put it up for adoption, or you should be on the pill for christs sake. You know what I think? If all the women whove had an abortion could somehow meet the child they killed... like if there was some way for them to meet their child as he or she would be at 5, 10, or 15 years old. If they could meet the child they killed and talk to them and get to know it, % of the women would change their mind and wish to god they hadnt had the abortion. They only abort the child because theyre thinking of themselves and their situations, and they dont see the fetus as a human being. They see it as exactly that - an IT, instead of the human being it really is, and will become, with feelings and emotions. So yeah. [/end rant]

-how do you feel about the legalization of drugs? Make it all legal. This is something that only affects the person concerned, and the government should not be allowed to dictate what we do to our own bodies. But when people are high, they do stupid things, and kill people. Yeah, well, drunk drivers kill a hell of a lot more people then potheads do, and last time I checked, alcohol was legal.

-how do you feel about censorship? When is it okay and when isnt it? I hate censorship, I really do. I know sometimes it is necessary, but not to the extent its usually taken to. I hate it, and its usually just people infringing on freedom of speech because they personally dont like something. Im a strong believer in the theory that if you dont like something, dont watch/listen.

-what is your opinion on pre-marital sex? I am not a member of the religious reich.

-How do you feel about cloning? Do you think it’s a good or a bad idea? We are going to FUCK OURSELVES UP. We really are. As soon as we start cloning people, were gonna with we hadnt. thats all I have to say about that. but cloning organs, etc. is good because it reduces waiting lists for transplants and saves lives.

-What is your opinion on stem-cell research? Just not on embryos. There are other ways to do it, leave the fucking embryos out of it.

-How concerned were you about YK back when it was a serious issue to many people? I thought it was a bunch of media hype, and I was right.

-Do you identify more strongly as a pacifist or as an “eye for an eye” person? Total pacifist. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind ~Gandhi

-Do you feel that Bush is a good president? TOTAL.FUCKING.MORON.

-Do you feel Tony Blair is a good prime minister? I wouldnt know, but hes all George Bush is my friend! so Im not too big on him right now.

-If you’re American, did you vote in the last presidential election? Who did you vote for? 1. Im not an American citizen; . Im not 18; . It was a lose-lose situation, but I wouldve picked Gore... at least hes a Democrat.

-Do you think that Martha Stewart should go to prison for her involvement in insider trading? Why should I care any more about her than I would any other inside trader? I hope they all get their come-uppance.

-What is your opinion of Howard Stern? How often do you listen to his radio show, if at all? Hes living the dream of SO many men in the world, its not even funny. Hes living his dream, exploiting sluts, and making a living off it. More power to him. And I watch the show on E! if theres someone I know on it, like I watched when Jim Carrey was on.

-Are you democrat/labour/liberal OR republican/tory/conservative? Hahaha... tory. Ahem. Liberal.

-Are you a feminist? Not a militant, bra-burning feminist. I actually believe in EQUALITY of the sexes, and as we clearly have yet to achieve that in our society, Im pushing for it, and thus I am labelled a feminist.

-How do you feel about Homosexuality? Are you homophobic, gung-ho gay rights or somewhere in between? Dude, whatever floats your boat. Marching in a gay rights parade isnt high up on my list of things to do, mainly because I have other causes I can relate to personally and follow more closely, but Im always ready to defend the homosexual population against any close-minded homophobe I may come across.

-Do you believe homosexuals should be able to get legally married and receive the same benefits as heterosexual married couples receive? Absolutely. The only reason theyre not allowed is because America is still obviously showing its puritanical roots. All the laws that prohibit same sex marriages were founded by the religious reich, and seeing as America claims to be open to all religions and cultures, the government is being hypocritical and discriminatory by enforcing those laws.

-Do you look down on foreigners? (Are you a Xenophobe)? Im all for diversity, unless they enter the country illegally, in which case they can ship their asses back where they damn well came from. There are laws and they should be followed, theyre there for a reason. By all means, move around, just do it legally. But yeah, legal immigrants are good, diversity is good.

Your Spirituality

-Do you believe in God? I dont know. There probably is one of some sort. But maybe I only think that because I cant get my head around the fact that this universe just is. I dont know, no one does, and it drives me nuts.

-Are you religious? What religion/faith are you? Im not.

-Are you a spiritual person? to a certain extent.

-What is your opinion of Christianity? The bible has some good points and good stories and parables and such, but it was written by people, and people are biased and people make mistakes. Not to mention its been translated to many times and rewritten so many times... but yeah. Lets leave it at that.

-What is your opinion of “cult” faiths (Mormons, Scientologists, Hare Krishnas, Moonies, Jahova’s Witnesses, etc.)? Brainwashed nutcases. And you spelled Jehovah wrong. Sorry, my mother is one, I would know.

-What is your opinion of Moslem? Dude...its usually Muslim, but whatever. And anyway, thats what the people are called. People are Muslim or Islamic, the religion itself is called Islam. And its sexist. Incredibly so.

-What is your opinion of Judaism? Eight days of presents has got to be better than one.

-What is your opinion of Hindu/Jainism? yay, blue skinned gods with 8 arms. honestly, I laugh. I shouldnt, but I do. Im sorry.

-What is your opinion of Buddhism? makes a hell of a lot more sense than most faiths out there. but I am NOT giving away all my material possessions, so BITE ME.

-What is your opinion of Atheism? people who prefer to rely on facts rather than blind faith... très intelligent.

-Do you support the idea of converting others to one’s faith? NO. Mind your own damn business and stop trying to force your opinions on other people. Its not right.

-Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? Do you believe in any sort of afterlife? I dont know. so I guess I dont believe in anything, I just dont know.

-Do you believe in angels and guardian angels? not guardian angels, no. as for conventional angels, again, I dont know.

-Do you believe in Satan or some other sort of devil? ok, were back to the I dont know thing here.

-Do you believe in demons? Do you believe that Demons can take over a person’s body? if I dont know about angels, then I dont know about demons either. but all the exorcism crap - bullshit.

-Do you believe in Rapture (that God occasionally selects certain individuals to enter heaven without dying and that when this happens the person just disappears)? no.

-Do you believe in the Bible? Do you take it at face-value or do you believe it’s all symbolic? I already mentioned this... its symbolic, you cant take it literally, and besides, it can be interpreted in so many ways.

-Do you believe that when you take the sacrament that it literally turns into the blood and body of Jesus Christ? (there is a technical term for this, but it currently escapes me) No, & if you think so youre a fucking idiot. (haha, i didnt write that answer, i just left it there because i completely agreed, and it made me laugh like hell ^.^)

-Do you believe in Creationism, Darwinism or another theory? Darwinism isnt a theory, its proven... survival of the fittest happens everywhere, theres no denying it. Thats the way the world works. But if it happened over millions of years, species evolving into one another, I dont know. I dont know, and no matter what scientists or historians say, we never will KNOW. We can only hypothesize. And as I said earlier, it drives me nuts.

I am not a crook, Richard Milhous Nixon, 7th president of the United States, was born January , 11 in Yorba Linda, California to Francis A and Hannah Milhous Nixon. Richard Milhous Nixon was one of the most controversial politicians. Even with Watergate, and all of Nixons lies and mistakes, many historians call his presidency a success. Richard did not enjoy an easy childhood. His father Francis had a short tempter that led him to his soul hate of his four sons. Nixon did excel in one thing that was school.

Nixon entered Whittier College near his Yorba Linda family home. Richard Nixon was elected president of his class in his freshman and senior year. As president he often attended small groups are the campus. At the small meetings he was shy and reserved, but when he was in front of a crowd he would excel with his speaking skills. To help meet expenses, he drove a truck and picked up vegetables for the family store. He was ashamed of this kind of work and did it before sunrise so that none of his classmates would see him. These kinds of experiences scarred Nixon for life. He resented people who had money handed to them.

His school work and brains paid off as he graduated second in his class of 17. Richard’s good college record and recommendations from his teachers enabled him to win a scholarship to Duke University. He then graduated from Duke with a law degree, and was admitted to the California Bar. In 1 he became a partner in Bewley, Knoop, and Nixon.

Nixon found his love Thelma Catherine Patricia Ryan at the small law firm. On June 1, 140 was a day of wedlock when, Richard Nixon said “I do” and married Thelma Catherine Patricia Ryan. Richard and Thelma would later have two daughters, Julie and Tricia.

But after the attack on Pearl Harbor he longed for a military post, and became a Navy lieutenant. He was station at Bougainville, when it came under heavy enemy attack. Nixon had horrors of war when he removed corpses from a wrecked bomber. Nixon was popular with the men under his command. The men in the navy were fond of Nixon as he also opened a hamburger shack called “Nicks Snack Shack”. Richard then got discharged from the service in 146.

After Nixon’s fine days in the service, Richard Nixon quickly climbed the political ladder. A group of Republican businesses leaders felt a change was needed. The committee of 100; asked Nixon to run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He took the chance and campaigned aggressively and lone to debate with Voorhis, His opposition. Nixon won easily.

Richard Milhous Nixon was reelected in 148. It was at this time that people started to refer to him as “Tricky Dick”. His campaign tactics were anything but noble. He would drive around in a station wagon with a loudspeaker attached to the top, stopping wherever a crowd was gathering and smear his opponent. He quickly moved to seize the next rung, targeting an open seat in the United States Senate in 150.

In 15 the Republican rewarded Richard Nixon as Eisenhower’s running mate. He was an active vice- president, attending cabinet meetings and National Security Council meetings. “Tricky Dick” did assume presidential duties on three occasions, while Eisenhower was sick. During his 8 years as a vice president Nixon made a series of good will tours that took him to enemy continents.

On November 5, 168 Nixon was elected president. Upon becoming president, he turned his attention to foreign affairs. He requested legislation to improve urban transportation, raise social security benefits, fight crimes, and reorganize the postal system. In 170 Richard signed a bill to lower the voting age from twenty-one to eighteen.

Nixon was reelected for a second term of presidency. The major issue before him became known as the “Watergate Case” In June 17, five of Nixon’s operatives were caught going through Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate Complex. They were later convicted of burglary and political espionage. The president and his leading aids gave hush money to the “plumbers” so they would not involve the White House. But the cover-up collapsed.

The year 174 a grand jury named Nixon as a co-conspirator in the cover up. The House of Judiciary Committee recommends Nixon to be impeached. Rather then get impeached Nixon chose to resign. 4. Synopsis

World War II was responsible for the deaths of seventeen million members of the armed forces including ,000 Americans. Additional millions of civilians died from bombing raids, famine, epidemics and other war-related causes. The United Stated suffered relatively little destruction from the War. The number of American casualties was small compared to the rest of the world. Before and after the United States entered the War, a wide diversity of viewpoints existed amongst the people of the United States. In 140 Germany was a serious threat to the future of the democratic world. Although most Americans agreed that a German victory would be disastrous to the United States, many opposed the system of a military draft. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December of 141, the United States declared war. War had been inevitable for a while, however, it was not until the United States was directly attacked that full public support for war was present. During the War, many opposing opinions existed on issues ranging from the treatment of minorities, to the use of the atomic bomb. World War II Opposing Viewpoints brilliantly provides access to a wide diversity of opinions during World War II.

5. What does the book tell you about life in the United States during that time? What does the book tell you about the treatment of minorities in the United States?

American society was greatly affected by World War II. These effects included an expansion of the federal government, a change in the roll of women in the workplace, and the treatment of minorities in the United States. New government policies affected consumers, businesses and farmers. Americans who did not serve in the armed forces were affected by the shortage of goods and accommodations. Government agencies controlled prices and created rationing to manage the economy and control inflation. The governments encouragement of war production resulted in huge industrial productivity. Such a large industrial expansion contributed to an improvement in the economy. The unemployment rate dropped and the wages of many workers rose to record highs. During the War the government encouraged women to contribute to the war effort by joining the workforce. (See Appendix A) Over the course of the war the total number of women workers rose to nineteen million. Many women entered jobs that were previously dominated by men. Womens help in the war effort greatly contributed to the victory of the Allies.

World War II brought about many changes for members of Americas minority groups. During the war approximately one million African Americans were in the military, half of which served in other countries. Back in the United States, African Americans were treated as second-class citizens. Black organizations adopted the Double V slogan which symbolized victory over fascism and victory over racism in the United States. Some progress against racism towards African Americans was made during the War. Of all minority groups, Japanese Americans were affected the most during World War II. After Japans attack on Pearl Harbor, many people feared that Japanese residents would sabotage against the United States. Under President Roosevelts order, in 14 about 110,000 Japanese Americans on the West Coast, two-thirds being American citizens, were forced to leave their homes and move to inland camps confined by armed guards. (See Appendix B) Interestingly enough, such measures were not taken against immigrants from Germany and Italy, and also Hawaii, where Japanese Americans made up one-third of the population. For Japanese interned in detention camps and blacks denied many basic civil rights, the struggle for freedom is often focused on the United States rather than the battlefronts in Europe and Asia. (Bruno Leone, pg. 181)

6. Franklin D. Roosevelt struggled with the dilemma of isolationism vs. going to war. How does the book say he resolved this issue?

President Roosevelt, like most Americans, believed a victory for the Axis powers would be disastrous to the United States. However, Roosevelt proclaimed complete American neutrality in 1. In 140 the United States army contained only 70,000 soldiers and officers. Because Roosevelt was afraid of isolationist opposition, he and General George C. Marshall hesitated to recommend a draft. Grenville Clark, a corporate lawyer, argued for a system of compulsory military service. Influenced by Clarks work, Roosevelt and Marshall eventually acted in support of the draft. The draft law was passed in 140.

I have not said it once, but many times, that I have seen war and that I hate war. I say that again and again.

I hope the United States will keep out of this War. I believe that it will. And I give you assurance and reassurance that every effort of your Government will be directed toward that end. (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bruno Leone, pg. )

In this Radio address on September rd, 1, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for United States neutrality in the war in Europe. However, in the proceeding two years Roosevelt was accused of risking American neutrality and of pursuing policies that would lead the United Stated into war. Hoping for the defeat of Germany while maintaining United States Neutrality, and forbidden by American neutrality laws to provide loans to Great Britain, President Roosevelt sought other ways to aid Great Britain. In December, Roosevelt and his advisors thought up the idea of lend-lease. Under this proposal, the United States would lend military supplies to allied nations. On January 6th, 141, in his message to Congress, the United States would provide aid to countries fighting the Axis powers. In his message, Roosevelt defended that such aid would be necessary to defend freedoms in the United States and elsewhere in the world. Within his speech, Roosevelt talked about the four freedoms. (Appendix C) Despite widespread opposition (See Appendix D), President Roosevelts foreign policies were in effect. In December of 141, the United States formally entered the War.

7. Critique.

World War II Opposing Viewpoints compared to the textbook The Americans is written in a very similar style. Both books cover such Worlds War II topics as the pre-War isolationist movement in the United States and Roosevelts policies before the United States officially entered the War. Although World War II Opposing Viewpoints is significantly larger than the chapters which cover World War II in The Americans, each source contains topics the other does not extensively cover. The Holocaust is very well covered in The Americans but barely mentioned in World War II Opposing Viewpoints. The book World War II Opposing Viewpoints covers numerous topics dealing with the United States in World War II including womens role in the War which was not thoroughly covered in The Americans. Both sources cover the effects the War had on the United States but “World War II Opposing Viewpoints” covers the subject more extensively and with greater detail as the book is made up mostly of a collection of speeches and statements during World War II. Also, The Americans is a textbook which covers the entire history of the United states. This justifies why its coverage of World War II is much less extensive than that of World War II Opposing Viewpoints.

The text in The Americans and World War II Opposing Viewpoints is quite similar in language and in tone. However, World War II Opposing Viewpoints includes in its text many speeches, statements, and letters which The Americans does not mention at all or briefly quotes. An Argument that is very well covered in both books is the topic of isolationism vs. Roosevelts foreign policy. Similar to World War II Opposing Viewpoints, On page 758 of The Americans an argument of whether it is justified to aid the allies or not is debated. Let us say to the democracies, We Americans are vitally concerned in your defense of freedom…. We shall send you, in ever-increasing numbers, ships, planes, tanks, and guns. This is our purpose and our pledge. (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bruno Leone, pg. 5) This quote is excerpted from Roosevelts speech to congress on January 6th, 141. It is used in World War II Opposing Viewpoints to introduce a chapter about why the United States should aid the Allies. This nation will remain a neutral nation, but I cannot ask that ever American remain neutral in thought as well…. Even a neutral cannot be asked to close his mind or his conscience…. I have said not once, but many times, that I have seen war and that I hate war…. As long as it is my power to prevent, there will be no blackout of peace in the U.S. (McDougal Littell, pg.756) This excerpt from Roosevelts radio speech is used to introduce a section that describes the United States moving cautiously away from neutrality. This quote is also used in World War II Opposing Viewpoints to introduce a similar section. Both books quote Roosevelt numerous times to show the monumentality of Roosevelt’s role in World War II.

DESDEMONA

In Shakespeare’s tragedy of Othello, Othello’s wife Desdemona is portrayed as a well-rounded woman. She displays confidence when it is needed, but is also a devoted bold true wife. She is young, sexual and recently married, and in the play she occasionally displays a somewhat chiding wit. At times we see Desdemona as being submissive, but only ever to Othello. Although she exhibits an independent personality, she seems to make an effort not to come across as being too independent. She especially has to convince Othello of this, as he questions her fidelity. Until the end Desdemona seemed to have been capable of rising above the demands placed upon her.

Many like to see Desdemona as being a stereotypically weak and submissive woman of that era. But this ignores the conviction and authority she displays in her opening speech as she states “My noble father, / I do perceive here a divided duty”, this conviction is also later seen in her terse fury after Othello strikes her in front of many people, she then says “I have not deserved this”. Although Desdemona is an independent character she does display some submissiveness. This seldom seen submissive nature is most notable when she takes credit for her own murder, when in response to Emilia’s question, “O, who hath done this deed?” Desdemona replies as her final words, “Nobody, I myself. Farewell/ commend me to my kind lord. O, farewell.”

Contradictorily the play also represents Desdemona as a modest and faithful wife, who possesses a bold and independent personality. It is possible that this contradiction was intentional, the purpose being to portray the way Desdemona feels after defending her choice of marriage to her father, and then virtually straight away having to defend her fidelity to her husband, Othello. In the beginning of the play she appears to be supremely independent, and courageous as she stands up to her father with her choice of marriage, as Othello pays tribute to her “high and plenteous wit and invention”. It was Desdemona who first gave the Othello the hint to ask her to marry him, which is heard in Othello’s speech to the Duke and others “if I had a friend that lovd her, I should but teach him how to tell my story, / And that would woo her”. She also speaks with confidence when she tells the Duke that she “did love the Moor to live with him”, and also asks whether she may go to Cyprus with him.

Midway through the play Desdemona must struggle, as she desperately tries to convince Othello that she is not too independent. It also appears that Brabantio failed to understand his own daughter. The impression that she had grown up under the guidance of a possessive type of father is given. Nothing in his household, including his daughter had ever been challenged. He seems to have failed to realise that over the years she had grown up to be a person in her own mind. Brabantio was not the type of father that Desdemona could have shares her feelings with, and had never had a close enough relationship to open her heart to him. It is clear that Brabantio is appalled with her choice in husband as he states he evidently would have preferred “the wealthy curled darlings of our nation”.

Throughout the entire play we see that Desdemona has an absolute trust in Othello, as she states, “My noble Moor/ is true of mind, and made of no such baseness/ As jealous creatures are. She continually gives Othello entire obedience as we see the word “obey” appear in the marriage service. She at all times seeks to please him and is also very sensitive, “a child to chiding”. This is why we assume she did not tell Othello about the handkerchief. She is deeply in love with him, even after “his stubbornness, his checks and frowns”. Even Iago, the man that plots against her happiness, admits “she is of so free, so kind, so apt, so blessed a disposition, that she holds it a vice in her goodness not to do more than she is requested”.

It is unfortunate that Desdemona has fallen in love with a man that trusts others over her, which in turn leads to the murder of her. Emilia’s question is one the audience would be asking too, “what should such a food do with so good a wife?” Emilia plays quite an important role in the play, as her comparative vulgarity emphasizes the purity of Desdemona, who fails to understand how any woman can deceive her husband, and can hardly pronounce the wore “whore”.

Desdemona’s character is strong in some ways, and quite weak in others. She also has no mother, which is used for the dramatic effect of Desdemona on her own resources in moments of stress and need. Desdemona’s estrangement from her father is quite decisive, and in this situation Desdemona has no woman upon whom she can rely and to whom she might turn for help and sympathy when her father shuts the door against her. There is no one to give her any support, this fuels our sympathy for her lonely hand and increases the pathos of her situation. Desdemona is a loving wife, but unfortunately not one with a strong character all round.

Othello murders Desdemona, as he smothers her with a pillow in a bed covered in her wedding sheets. This murder seems to be symbolic as she is now literally suffocating beneath the demands put on her fidelity. Since her opening lines Desdemona seemed capable of winning against all odds, and meeting demands that were placed upon her, until Othello takes away all her strength. Desdemona possesses a true, kind heart. She is a very trustworthy character which only increases our sympathy for her, as she doesn’t in any way deserve what has come to her. Desdemona maintains right to her death that she is “guiltless”, and the audience can only begin to imagine her fear when she awakens to find Othello standing over her with murder in his eyes.

American Literature Grad. Standard Performance Package - History of the Arts

Part 1

History, as it is lived, does not divide itself neatly into periods; yet, with the advantage of retrospect, we can often classify people, events, and works of art according to certain shared characteristics. Strong differences in the religious, philosophic, economic, and social beliefs experiences uniquely shaped the content and character of the Colonial and Romantic literary genres. The literature of the Colonial period (1500- 1800) bears the mark of its creators and consumers European immigrants in search of religious expression. The writings of the Colonial period tied/connected closely to the life, work, and beliefs of those who gave the old world for the new, and were busy carving a country out of a wilderness. Restricted freedom of limited focus and interests in scope to biblical, devotional, and classical literature, the Puritans’ focus was restricted not only by their convictions, but by their economic circumstances as well. Their mantra was survival in a new world through obedience and moral purity, sustained by spiritual exercise and devotion. They had few possessions and little leisure time to waste on subjective distractions. They eeked out an existence in a challenging, undeveloped, new world. Literature’s directly related to its ability to offer encouragement and spirit - sustenance or substance??? in a hostile and unpredictable environment. There was certainly no heaven on earth, so the Colonial civilizations invested their energies in a world to come.

With the arrival of established communities and ever-expanding opportunities beckoning settlers on(as in the Romantic era), literature shifted from the individual and his God, to the individual himself. Stories of godly character were supplanted by stories of outstanding character and individuals. Growth in industry with broadening infrastructure of highways and communications multiplied the average citizen’s exposure to certain beliefs or information. Sermons were now supplemented by news weeklies, published almanacs, and circulars. Where once sovereignty of reason reigned supreme in shaping character through literature, there now thrived a broadened view of human beings questions, emotions, and reactions to nature and the world at large. With their very existence no longer hanging in the balance, people shifted their focus from their quest for survival to their quest for beauty and understanding.

As America’s population, economy, and territory expanded, so did the middle-class. As wealth increased, so did literacy rates and the demand for novels and narrative literary works a scarce commodity during colonial times.

One prime example of Colonial literature took the form of a sermon by Jonathan Edwards called Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, which functioned to awaken people to their powerlessness, depravity(badness, moral corruptness), and fateful dependence on God. His sermon, considered the most passionate and terrifying serm?on of the time, wa?s one of many that had been instrumental in shepherding people back to a faith which pioneer preachers feared w?as weakening in the young Americas. Churches wer?e the central stage of colonial social and cultural engagement. The absence of other available media left sermons as a popular expressive form of literature. Jonathan Edwards w?as key among several gifted communicators who effectively used the pulpit as a tool for social and spiritual change in the early 1700’s. His protracted, dramatic preaching helped spark a major religious revival, which spread throughout New England. Edwards- convinced that people had strayed from the faith which initially led them to New England- had been educated far above the masses, and used his literacy genius to capture their attention. The vivid imagery created by the use of metaphors pummeled the imaginations of parishioners and brought many to the brink of hysteria. His explicit and intense descriptions of hell showed people how close they had come to total annihilation. Parishioners reported visions of terror and some people went into shock. The Puritan culture’s emphasis on personal responsibility helped Edwards to use common contempor(of the time?-not contempor.)?ary presupisitions as a sounding board to hammer out(this sentence not specific/concrete to its meaning/too long, melodramatic…?) call for revival. Deep in their heart, Puritans were convinced of their guilt and need to reform and Edward’s vivid indictments brought them to (terror(some report.Visionsandothers going in shock) struckhome/personally?-already usedvisions…).

The metaphors in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God assist Edwards in conveying his point that the human race’s fate rests entirely in God’s hands with nothing they can do about it. One example he uses is to compare people to spiders or loathsome insects which God holds over the pit of hell just as one holds the spider. Edwards states in this comparison that it is nothing but his (God’s) hand that keeps the people from falling into the fire at any moment. You have nothing to lay hold of to save yourself……nothing you have ever done, nothing you can do to induce God to spare you. (Need to explain all the parts of people’s powerlessness Go

The Scarlet Letter functions in the form of a novel to explore the consequences of concealing the truth, and the rewards or gratifications of revealing it through its characters and symbolism. This work by Nathaniel Hawthorne maintains its character as a Romantic piece by steeping into the lives of a few outstanding-even extreme-characters(in unuususal stuations???). Hawthorne introduces Hester, the protagonist, after the birth of her child born out of wedlock. She proceeds to enrich all who observe her through the remainder of the novel, as she responds to the aftermath of her untimely predicament. Dimmesdale, the town preacher, under similar circumstances, reacts in an entirely opposite fashion from Hester, outwardly concealing the truth. The third character of significance, Roger Chillingworth, uses his own sense of betrayal and rage in an attempt to bring ruin to Dimmesdale and Hester (his estranged wife from an arranged marriage). Roger conceals the truth (their secret -- all three characters) and allows it to seethe and fester from within. Finally, there lives Pearl, a child of the perceived infidelity, whose natural and impulsive personality is disclosed throughout the novel as if breathing fresh oxygen into the stagnant Puritan community, closed to an objective, passionate world perspective.

Remaining true to the Romantic genre, Hawthorne uses symbolism to good effect to underscore themes of conflict in the novel. The symbolism functions to encourage personal reflection of all who consider the plight of the individuals involved in the story. Hester represents a modern everyday woman with an insatiable quest for her own identity. She draws on one’s sympathies facing a difficult, if not impossible, life situation. Never apologizing, she’s always evaluating her role in creating a life of integrity for herself. Unafraid of the opinions of others, she seeks her salvation by facing the truth of her circumstances head on. As a self-determined and strong-willed individual, she typifies the protagonist of Romanticism. In the course of being true to herself, she helps to save not only her own soul, but that of the ?commiunity?? around her, to whom she often appears irritatingly enigmatic. And as such a supreme enigma, Hester functions to help all who follow her questions about their own lives and own integrity as well.

Dimmesdale represents the status quo of his contemporaries in Puritan America. Full of and subject to his natural passions, the minister failed to contain them and tragically fell victim to the backlash of his own denial. From the Scarlet A -which he had carved into his own flesh- to his outbursts of demonic laughter, he cries out as one who could not reconcile his own weakness with the standards of moral perfection. Dimmesdale’s denial grew within him as a cancer that consumed his soul. He sharpened his preaching skills to a fine art due to the compulsivity of his cover-up, and fooled everyone except for those who cared about him most. He attempted in vain to keep this blot on his soul from coming forward, drawing one into his/her own questions and dilemmas about trying to be moral perfectionists.

Chillingworth, often referred to as a leech in the novel, fed off of others pain and remorse in an attempt to satisfy his fathomless appetite for revenge. He antagonized Hester and Dimmesdale by doing all he could to ensure that their awful secrets remain dark and hidden. In an attempt to reconcile the pain in his own life by making others pay their dues, he left a path of death and destruction - including his own. Chillingworth shows that pure evil and death does not lie in performing an immediate act of passion, but rather in making an art of carefully plotted and precisely aimed revenge as he was unable to forgive and made sure that the healing truth never came to light(toolong-runon).

Pearl, Hester’s free-spirited and unashamed daughter, depicts Hawthorne’s crisp, albeit anachronistic, infusion of Romantic individualism into his setting of repressive Puritanism. She was born into a community of people blinded by fears, excuses, prejudices, and unattainable ideals. The passion which led to her conception permeates her character - affirming the goodness of the primordial, natural order. She served as if a prophetess from the redeeming, natural world by provoking adults with pointed questions that drew their attention to the truths which they concealed. It is likely that Hawthorne realized a pearl is a gem derived from the presence of a grating irritation- such as a grain of sand. Her direct questions grated on the fixed mindset of the community (even her mother at times). She provides the text’s most penetrating judgment of Dimmesdale’s failure to admit to his adultery. Once Dimmesdale confessed on the scaffold (in Chapter ), airing the truth about his adultery, Pearl’s role in the novel satisfied and she became fully human.

Principles in Romantic literature usually don’t stand laid out in condensed, well defined formats; instead they are suggested through symbolism. Hawthorne used many symbols to outline the struggle between concealment and acknowledgement of truth. In the first chapter, the rosebush directly outside the prison door is introduced to symbolize beauty that stands alone and thrives undiminished by humanity and its dysfunctions that seek to constrain and hamper the spirit of nature. The forest represents escape from a rule-bound society where both evil and honest self-examination can occur. Shame-based and judgmental Puritans feared the wilderness, while Hester and Pearl entered it fearlessly. Placed on the outskirts of the town and the edge of the forest, Hester and Pearl’s cottage symbolized their roles as ambassadors of truth telling, beckoning the society to dispose of its judgments, secrets, and lies.

Perhaps most importantly, the scarlet letter, a symbol intended to shame and debase the bearer, becomes an emblem of victory in hester’s self-transformation. Instead of concealing her past which would thwart her energies, Hester chooses to proudly wear her history, even when the town fathers consider letting her remove it. The meaning of her embroidered A goes from an adulteress, to able, then even becomes a possible elevated status (Native Americans at the Election Day ceremony think of Hester’s scarlet letter as a sign of high status).

(Last paragraph-only sentences- and some others need to be longer. PLUS- this section does not seem complete- remember to use concrete examples from the lterature-tell exactly where in novel and exact.what happened- Also, DEVELOPING sentences after topic sentence!!!!!!)

If it were possible to publish the works by Hawthorne and Edwards together as segments of an anthology and produce a suitable title, one might name this ‘The Mortal Dangers of the Unexamined Life’. The idea of bravely submitting your life to the scrutiny of tough earthly questions and the idea of placing yourself at the mercy of God’s divine judgement, are two paths to the same destination of moral integrity. According to both authors, they are clearly the roads less traveled which lead to destinations seldom attained. Hawthorne’s protagonist Hester and her daughter Pearl are unusually strong, direct females, who always ask themselves and others the hardest of questions. Churchgoers who heed Edwards’ call to a state… of light and life succeed only through honesty, humility, and self-examination. In neither work is moral perfection ever suggested or asked for as a requirement for spiritual salvation in this world or the next. It is precisely only the individuals who are most willing to reveal their deep sinfulness and their very lack of perfection who have any glimmer of hope for either temporal or eternal salvation.

In The Scarlet Letter the only characters who seem to grow, thrive, have hope for a future, ask questions. Hawthorne’s Hester and Pearl face off with the harsh facts of their lives consistently. Hester chooses to wear the scarlet letter even when allowed to remove it by the town fathers. As an infant, Pearl persisted to draw attention to and ask the meaning of the scarlet letter. Hawthorne suggests this is the result of being like a child of the universe - like Pearl, who is unflinchingly candid and unashamed. Dimmesdale never

Edwards harshly questions and indicts the righteousness of his parishioners, hoping and trusting that they concur. He railed that the people who continue to sit attending His solemn worship are the same ones who provoked Him. They have hidden the truth of their sins and have caused the great waters of God’s wrath to rise higher and higher until the wrath of God would rush forth with inconceivable fury.

Edwards suggests it is a gift of God’s grace. Both authors warn the only reward awaiting those who refuse to submit to this spiritual challenge is a hellish destiny.

If there were a difference between Hawthorne’s and Edawards’ assessment of this moral struggle, it might be to what degree human effort in this pursuit is effective. Edwards, in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God tells people -- even with their most diligent efforts- their fate rests at God’s mercy. Edwards focus’ on God as the active agent in salvation.

Hawthorne suggests heaven and hell are products of mankind’s own design and making and that most individuals have ample opportunity and ability to re-chart the course of their own lives steering clear of the perilous, rocky shores of self-delusion. It would not be out of the question to speculate that Edwards would have agreed with Hawthorne that man plays a role in this battle. What else could explain why he preached to so many people, so vehemently, if he had not sincerely believed in the value of their participation. Indeed, he witnessed much human change during The Great Awakening of souls, the religious revival for which he is credited.

Several sides/angles/partsto? of the similar theme strengthen the connection between the two works. The theor??ies sta??ting that hiding from the truth will destroy a person, there are moral standards from which nobody is exempt, spiritual responsibility ultimately rests upon the individual, and that embracing the reality of one’s sinfulness makes the person more complete and enlivens him (or her), -idon’tknow?- ar?e some of these fragmen?ts.

In The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale….

Chillingworth…

The standards of moral. from which no one is exempt..regardless of position, status, or good deeds/achievements

In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards says that even if you may have reformed your life in many things,..had religious affections, and may keep up a form of religion in your families and closets and in the house of God, and may be strict in it, you are still in the hands of an angry God as much as anyone else.

In The Scarlet Letter, the very man believed perceived as the most holy becomes one of those most lost. Both works suggest, that regardless of your station or status in life, if you suppress the truth you are damned.
