The concept of Atlantis spans throughout the world as fact, legend, mythology, philosophy and even fiction. It is this area that has intrigued me into this investigation and following led me to firstly ask what are the original sources of Atlantis? This in turn spurred further inquiry into the theorist’s use of other evidence to support their claims and evidence they must ignore to continue a verifiable theory. Thus my major work is an examination of “How evidence has been used in the search for Atlantis.”


The following essay examines five prominent theories of the Atlantis enigma and the evidence they use in support and ignorance to substantiate their theories. Throughout each presentation of these theories there is an underlining thread of how they have integrated Plato’s evidence into their own. I believe there are four main ways in which to interpret Plato’s work firstly as it is; secondly as a stepping-stone to the truth thirdly as an exaggeration of a known historical event; and fourthly as an allegory to portray a philosophical truth. As such each theory has been selected in order to accurately portray the different ways to interpret the evidence and to effectively examine the different ways to interpret the evidence and to effectively examine different areas of the search for Atlantis. Each theory presents a comprehensive and logical idea of Atlantis nevertheless it is my belief that there is not enough solid evidence to prove its existence and therefore more likely resides only within the philosophy of ancient Greece.
