It asserts that women are ads, meant to appeal to an audience. To understand the true power of the words “it sells,” one must understand who the audience is, who “it” is appealing to. So we ask the question, “who does the female body appeal to, who is it selling to?” Women? Maybe, but a more general answer would be men. Although this is probably assumed by most, further analyzing of the words reveals that the society that uses women to sell and sells women is indeed male-centric. When Atwood uses phrases like “It sells,” and “It is sold,” she objectifies the female body. She does this to show the reader what society has turned women into a tool. Do words have enough power to turn a human being into a tool? It would seem so.

Although Atwood does use this consistent tone of sarcasm, it does reach a peak. This happens when she refers the female body as a natural resource. “She’s a natural resource, a renewable one luckily, because those things wear out so quickly. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Shoddy goods” (408). This is arguably the most powerful point in the whole essay. This line dehumanizes the female body more than any other sentence in the entire essay. The word choice and phrasing can seem appalling to an audience. This evokes emotions of pure dissidence with the “traditional role” of the female gender. A “natural resource,” first of all is something that is often taken for granted, much like the true value of female human beings, as opposed to the value of any other male living person. Additionally, Atwood tacks on the word “renewable” (408). This is the epitome of sarcasm in this essay. By saying that the female gender is a renewable resource, she is saying that one could always be replaced by another. It raises the questions “humans are not like throw-away tuber ware, can someone really be replaced so easily?” and “does this place a value on human life?” The word “renewable” answers affirmatively to both of these questions. It tells the reader that once a female is overused, obsolete, or generally unfashionable, it can be simply thrown out and replaced by a new one. It is much like a car, valuable with low miles while it is in its prime, but worn and cheap once it reaches, say, 100,000 miles. Even worse, Atwood illustrates a declining value and a loss of longevity when she says, “They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” This not only places a value on the female gender, but a diminishing value. It almost applies basic economics to women; they have a sort of diminishing marginal utility. This is a prime example of how language can yield so much power. It has the power to show that women can lose value in time. Atwood illustrates how society can easily replace a woman that has lost value with time with a younger, or more valuable one.

This passage climaxes Beowulf’s fight with the dragon. Earlier in the epic the reader learned that a dragon had guarded ancient hidden treasure. One day a slave accidentally stumbled upon the secret treasure and stole a piece, causing the dragon to become angry and begin terrorizing Beowulf’s people and land. After the dragon destroyed Beowulf’s own great hall, Beowulf decides the threat of the dragon must be extinguished. Therefore Beowulf goes to attack the dragon and a battle between him and the dragon pursues. The men Beowulf brought along with him all flee except one named Wiglaf, and together Beowulf and Wiglaf manage to kill the dragon. The actual killing of the dragon tales place in this passage; “Beowulf deadly it a deadly wound. They had killed the enemy.” Unfortunately for Beowulf the struggle with the dragon also claimed his life. This is evident in the last three lines of the passage when the epic states that the defeat of the dragon “would be the last of his [Beowulf’s] many labors.”

The chosen passage is really a pivotal point in the epic. In it, Beowulf sacrifices his own life in order to protect his people from a deadly enemy. Unless Beowulf is able to kill the dragon, he would be put in the same situation Hrothgar was in with Grendel in the very beginning. Therefore Beowulf decides it would be best to slay the dragon and preserve the safety of his people. This leads us to the third and final battle scene in the epic, which differs from the first two in a major way. The first two battle scenes (Beowulf fighting Grendel and then Beowulf fighting Grendel’s mother) were all about Beowulf’s quest for fame and glory as well as fortune. But in the final battle Beowulf is fighting to protect his own people and he commits the ultimate sacrifice in order to ensure that his people would be safe. In the context of the epic, this act was considered an act of “courage”, “nobility”, and “triumph”. The audience is able to justifiably infer that Beowulf wished the die as a warrior defending his people because it was the right and noble thing for any king, especially Beowulf, to do.

If the reader considers this passage historically, they would clearly see pagan and Christian influences. For example the dragon is built out of a lot of pagan influence. It’s not hard for the reader to assume that the dragon was most likely from a previous pagan myth. The dragon clearly illustrates strength, greed, and pride. But Christianity is also present when the mighty and noble Beowulf comes along and with Wiglaf is able to defeat and kill this dragon. The virtuous Beowulf, or the Christian aspect, therefore puts and end to the dragon, or the pagan aspect. In this way the passage contains a lot involving the transition between pagan and Christian.

There is speculation about whether what Beowulf did was heroic and selfish or an act of responsibility as a king. Some critics claim that Beowulf took the easy way out by playing hero and dying rather than sticking around to remain king and rule his people. But it can easily be seen through this passage that Beowulf was brave and heroic at the same time he was acting as a responsible king and thinking of his people. The epic clearly states that just as Beowulf destroyed his enemy, “so every man should act, be at hand when needed.” Beowulf met his expectations and went down as a great warrior and hero defending the safety of his people.

As he trudged on through the gleaming white sand, he felt his limbs plunge through a piece of unfastened sand, causing him to lose equilibrium and collapse.

“Damn” he remarked exasperatingly. He feet were wedged firm in the sand. He tried with all of his strength to move his foot. He managed to haul it a few inches. The explorer in him took over. Out of his pocket he took out his key picking implements.

There was a soft click as the lock popped open. Hannibal removed it and cautiously opened the external layer.

“Oh my God,” he cried plaintively. Inside was the biggest collection of jewels and coins he had ever seen. Diamonds, jewels, sapphires, Spanish Diablo’s, rubies. There were so many of them. His eyes were then drawn to a small black leather pouch in the back of the box. He took it out, grasped the gold clasp and pulled it free from its housing. A small red book with silver corners fell out.

He opened the book and began to

examine its many pages. He noticed

that they were very thin and

resembled the material that papyrus

was made from. He looked closer and

found that he was correct. He remembered studying it while on a covert ops mission in an archaeological dig in Egypt. But what was this parchment doing out here in the Great Sandy Desert, so far from Egypt, he thought. He continued to turn the pages, taking care not to damage their delicate

and brittle structure. The pages were filled with very old and faded pictures, pictures of different people from a family. There was one large picture of a gathering of 50 � 60 people and then smaller individual pictures. He opened the middle page and gasped as he saw the photo. It was of a decapitated man. The picture was more detailed than the rest and seemed to have stood the test of time better too. Hannibal flicked on to the other pages, but came back to the middle again. He thought that had had seen a head appearing on the decapitated mans head. He shook his own head and closed his eyes. It must have been the sun playing tricks on him. It was extremely humid and Hannibal was wearing some heavy clothes to hold all of his equipment.

Suddenly, Hannibal felt a cold wind

sweep in from the north. Sand was whipped up into the air. Hannibal was engulfed.

He tried to run back to his jeep, but his sprained ankle did him no justice. When he finally did reach

It, he tried to call for help.

“This is Hannibal Gorman, code number 577 � B, requesting emergency airlift immediately.” He literally spat out the final words as there was still some sand stuck in his mouth.

He was only vaguely aware that he was still holding the book. He looked again at the many pictures as he waited for a response.

Unexpectedly, a voice erupted from within the book. It echoed round the cabin and filled Hannibal’s ears.

“Many years I have lain here waiting for someone to come. You will be of great use to me, young Hannibal, great use indeed.

Hannibal was stunned. Abruptly a white gas began to emit from the pages and photos of the book. They filled Hannibal’s mind with terrible thoughts, thoughts of death, murder and war. He couldn’t get them out.

There was quiet then. Hannibal felt light headed. He tried to pick up the receiver to query where his help was but he was strong enough. His eyes rolled back in his head. He fell forward and hit his head on the black metal steering wheel. A trickle of warm blood navigated the lines and wrinkles in his face. He was cataleptic, and close to death.

“This is Headquarters to Hannibal Gorman. Message received, authorization code verified. Helicopters have been scrambled. Will be with you soon. Headquarters out.”

Hannibal opened his eyes and stared at the pearly white ceiling. It took him a few moments to realize where he was � The Pentagon Triage Facility. He sat up and stared around at the perfectly sterile room. Outside the door he could hear the soft drone of nurses, doctors, patients, pagers and telephones as they all screamed to have a million things done at once. He put his hand to his head and felt the deep wound that was slowly healing.

Another voice then took over in his head, a harsh and antagonized voice.

“Go to the main defense room now and bring the book” The message continued to echo inside Hannibal’s mind and before he knew it he up and getting dressed.

He slipped out through a backdoor and made his way down along the red-carpeted hallway. A few ensigns and lieutenants stood to attention as he passed.

“At ease,” he muttered gruffly.

He reached the defense room and waited as the infrared sensors acknowledged that he had clearance and was not hostile.

“Please enter authorization code,” came the computers bland but insipient voice.

“Name � Hannibal Gorman, Level Clearance 1 � granted. Please proceed.”

Hannibal tried to keep his demeanor as regular as possible to try not to attract too much attention. He nodded curtly to the emotionless bureaucrat and walked on.

As he neared the metal door he tensed up. He felt the muscles in his arms tighten

but he did not know why. The security guard at the end of corridor got up and placed one hand on the holster of his weapon.

“Good Morning Sir, may I see your identification please.”

“He’s irrelevant � kill him,” came the voice in Hannibal’s head again. Once again he felt his muscles tense up. He had no control over them. But the entities demand had really caught him by surprise this time. Hannibal had never killed anyone in his life. Despite this, he walked straight up to the metal door, reached up and disconnected the great wire protruding out of the security camera. The guard rushed up to stop Hannibal but was dealt a nasty blow to his midsection, which winded him severely. The guard’s gun clattered onto the floor. Hannibal then walked over, picked it up, made sure that it was loaded and

fired � once, twice, and three times. The guard fell back onto the floor, blood oozing out of the wounds in his body. Hannibal knew then that the entity was contented � for the moment.

ALERT, ALERT � Klaxons went off all around him. He walked straight up to the door, and shot the lock. It exploded in a fiery burst of sparks. The rubber seals around the door hissed and loosened and the door swung open slowly.

Hannibal rushed in and activated the

Nothing could get past those doors � for a while anyway.

He looked around at the glittering glimmering room. There were so many screens, each with one specific function. Once again the voice spoke in his skull.

“Take out the book and open it. Now do exactly as I say � activate all I.C.B.M’s and target them onto the following co-ordinates. Thank you Hannibal for allowing me to do this. The pictures in this book represent people that I used to know and hate � my so-called ‘family’. I am a spirit from Egypt from many thousands of years ago. I was imprisoned in this book by an ancient magic and was bound to spend eternity in that desert away for anywhere that I could harm. I mean what is so wrong with trying to take over a country and kill it’s leader. Everyone did it back then, so why couldn’t I?”

“You are insane,” said Hannibal in a spiteful voice, “of course that’s bad. There is a name for you � a megalomaniac � a person who craves power so much that they would do anything they could to get it. You despise me!”

“Silence,” roared the voice in his head, “you do not dare disobey me!”

Hannibal felt a deep pain in his heart. He clasped his hands over his chest and howled out in pain.

“Now I will have my revenge. I will destroy those countries and people who tried to destroy me. This time I will not fail. I shall triumph.

Hannibal’s motor neurons were activated. There was nothing he could do. He walked over to the main console. His fingers ran deftly over the black shining surface.

“Now,” hissed the voice, “set co-ordinates for Cairo, Alexandria, Moscow, New York and London. High Yield Warheads. Fire when ready.”

Hannibal’s fingers entered the commands but even as they did so, he could hear gunfire from outside the metal door. The C.I.A. were trying to get in, but would they be in time? Hannibal was willing to give his life for his country � he had taken an oath to do no harm. He knew that once they gained access, they would kill him where he stood anyway. Many thoughts ran through Hannibal’s psyche. He knew that what was in his head could hear and sense all these feelings too, but that did not seem to matter to him at all.



Hannibal swore softly under his breath. He was not going to let this crazed fanatic win.

He looked around and saw the silver revolver. There were still minute traces of red blood on its shining façade. This act took the entity completely by surprise. Hannibal lunged over and seized it. As soon as he had gotten an adequate grip, he squeezed the trigger. Bullets ricocheted off the black walls. They flew about the room, and finally hit the manuscript. Torrents of ink of every color spurted ubiquitously. The voice in Hannibal’s head screamed.

Once again, Hannibal felt the familiar sensation of the gray gas leaving his body. The voice stopped and was gone. Hannibal was completely aware of his own thoughts again. He was free.

Hannibal’s attention was drawn to the flashing symbols on the display. He rushed over and hit the flashing red push button. He knew that all the weapons would not do anyone any harm now. It was over.

Hannibal looked back towards the metal door. It was now glowing bright orange. They were almost through.

Hannibal collapsed onto a chair, and

No neighborhood, town, or even an entire city fills me with as much delight and emotion as my family home in sunny Salinas California. Located just an hour south of our Mission campus, my home is my personal sanctuary where I can run to whenever times are rough. The smooth stucco walls serve as protection against the harsh and unforgiving outside world. Smells, sounds, tastes, even textures make the creamy off-white colored home with sky blue trim so special and unique.

Sprinkles on the petals of the rose’s in our prized garden don’t look quite as beautiful any place else in the world. Notre Dame high school, my alma mater, is located just down the street from my home, in turn producing an abundance of after school visitors. The Pura home has the reputation of being a place to go to relax after challenging day at school. Dinner time is a much celebrated event at my house. With two working parents, and three girls very involved with extra-curricular activities, appetites roar at around 60, the time our delicious dinners are usually served. When times get rough and I need someone to listen to my problems, I turn to Alexander. He’s 1 years old, yet has maintained a fur coat as soft as a feather. My cat is a magician who magically knows when I need his assistance. My bad moods trigger a signal and it’s as if he’s instantly there. His soft purring is one of the most comforting things in the world!



Life in the dorms has thus far produced many emotions, both good and bad, but nothing can ever replace my beautifully raptured home sweet home. Monthly visits to my home are all I can do to nourish my inner cravings for the joy my home creates within me.

Well I guess the reader as does Dee realizes that has lasted long enough.

It seemed that the mother had, had quit enough of Dee?s demands and spoiled antics displayed upon her visit back home. Demanding things be given to her such as the butter churn top when she had no real use for it, only wanting it for display. Dee went to far when she wanted to take the hand stitched quilts the mother had been saving for Maggie to inherit upon her marriage. When she was initially turned down in a polite way Dee attacked her sister Maggie whom was always intimidated by her saying that she wouldn?t appreciate them and insulting both Maggie and her mother in saying that they didn?t know nor understand their heritage. To both Dee?s and Maggie?s shock the mother said no and took the quilts shoving them back at Maggie strongly saying to Dee that they were Maggie?s and that she needed to pick others. This enraged Dee letting that be known by storming out of the house with no quilts hopped into her car and drove away.

However, when they fail to differentiate between themselves and their case -

they can act badly and cause illogical destruction.

When a person goes into agreement with his case, he is being his case, and he does not DIFFERENTIATE between his case and himself - that is what out ethics is. There is no distance between him and his case because by agreeing with it, he has BECOME it and he is BEING his case.

Thus, he believes case thoughts and ideas to be his own ideas - no differentiation there you see, and so he ACTS on those thoughts, because he accepted them as his thoughts, and that is dramatization and that is overts.

Well, what is being COVERED UP here is the real YOU.

Whatever is COVERING you up so you cant see the real you - is what we need to handle here. When she understood that, we began.

I asked her what bad actions she might have been doing in her lifetime and she started telling me some. I would then get her to spot her JUSTIFIERS for those actions - because just getting someone to tell you an overt does nothing for the case - because they dont think it was an overt. They have justifiers for the overts you see - so in their mind it really was not an overt because its justified. So, to take an overt OFF the case - you do not audit overts - you audit justifiers.

So, I would ask her why wasnt it an overt?. She gave me the usual justifiers - they are assholes, they deserved it, they did such and such to me, etc. After auditing justifiers for awhile - I said to her - Im confused about something. She asked what?

I said - I thought you told me you are a bad person. She said I did tell you that. I said - well what is confusing me is Im wondering why a bad person would justify overts. Wouldnt a bad person just do the overts without feeling any need to justify them? This gave her pause and she looked at me like a ghost had just entered the room - now there was a unique thought, never looked at it that way.

So, I said - lets continue on now - and had her give me more overts and justifiers for those overts. Then we hit the one I was looking for. She was telling me about cheating on her boyfriend and she felt bad about that one. I could see she was suppressing grief. So, I asked her - do you feel like crying? She burst into tears.

We took a little time to get the grief charge off.

I then asked her how did it make her feel that she had cheated on her boyfriend. She said shitty. I then said - when you hurt other people, how does it make YOU feel? She said shitty.

I then said - Im confused about something again. She said what? I said - why would a bad person feel shitty about cheating on their boyfriend? Or feel shitty when they hurt someone else? She finally got it. She said they wouldnt feel bad.

She then cognited and said -

Oh my god! Im not a bad person - Im a good person who just does bad things!

I said I agree - thats the end of the process - Find Out Who You Really Are.

She then said that she had been unhappy her whole life and she saw that other people were happier than she was and felt that was unfair. Why should they be happy when she was not? So, she intended to pull them down to unhappiness with her by doing what she could to make them unhappy too.

I then told her - I did not want to play that game -and get pulled down to unhappiness with you. I reminded her of the tone scale and the purpose of auditing - to move a person UP the tone scale. I said I have a better idea - why dont you come UP the tone scale to where I am and we can both be happy and treat each other right and be friends? She said I like that idea.

Then she asked me if she was a Scientologist. I said which way do you want to go on the tone scale, up or down? She said up. I said - well, thats what its all about, going UP the tone scale, becoming a happier person. She said - well, then Im a Scientologist because I want to go up the tone scale. I said I agree.

I told her that she was mishandled by church ethics because those ethics officers also have their enemy formula out and handle people in such a way as to knock the other persons enemy formula out, instead of getting it in.I said when you leave ethics with the idea you are a bad person - your enemy formula is out and of course you are going to continue committing overts because what else does a bad person do - except commit overts?

I then hatted her a little more on the Overt Motivator Sequence - with her new understanding that she was basically good. Now it made a lot of sense to her.

I taught her that the Overt Motivator sequence is NOT a natural law. Just because someone commits an overt on you, does not mean you have to commit one back on them. In fact, because you are basically good, you are a fool if you do, because now you are going to put yourself in hell.

Ron says the Overt Motivator sequence is THE mental mechanism that makes life on earth hell.

Lets examine why that would be. A being who is basically good but who is committing overts will cave himself in in various ways in the effort to stop himself from committing overts because he really does not like harming others.

Thus when he harms another dynamic he feels bad about having done so. Thus he feels a need to justify the overt to reduce the guilt he feels. So, he levels unwarrented criticism at the dynamic he harmed and thus he also mocks up Motivators. Those motivators really hurt too, because he is using it to JUSTIFY his overt against the other dynamic.

But, ALL justifiers are lies, because what the being is saying is this

It wasnt really an overt because....

That is a lie, no matter what he fills in the blank with, because the truth is - it WAS an overt. And deep down inside himself, even despite his efforts to hide this fact from himself - he secretly knows it was an overt.

And secretly knowing it was an overt - he will now punish himself for having committed it. There are various ways he will punish himself - one way being to mock up a painful motivator that he clutches to his bosom and wont let go of for dear life.

Because he is basically good, he continually seeks to get his ethics in and restrain himself from committing any more overts against that dynamic. Thus you have a decline of his abilities � the result is inabilities and illnesses. These are self-imposed as an effort to prevent himself from committing overts.

If the being finds he still cannot restrain himself from committing overts - his final solution is to leave. The reason he is leaving the area is because he is BASICALLY GOOD. He has concluded that he cannot restrain himself from harming that dynamic so IN ORDER TO PROTECT THAT DYNAMIC FROM ANY MORE HARM BY HIM � he leaves.

That’s his way of putting his ethics in when he concludes that he cannot stop himself from harming that dynamic � he leaves.

All of the above phenomena is PROOF that he is BASICALLY GOOD

1. Justification

. Harming himself with self-imposed inabilities and illnesses

What I taught this girl was that because she was basically good - that if she committed overts - she would punish herself in the above various ways for having done so. The Overt Motivator sequence is the primary way one descends down the tone scale into unhappiness. Therefore, undoing and rising above this mental mechanism is the way one goes back up the tone scale and remains up.

What I got her to see was that if she comitted an overt - she would then destroy her own happiness, and regardless of how it affects anyone else - she should not commit overts out of her own self interests - to protect herself from destroying herself and sending herself down tone.

The person has not only recognized that he did in fact harm another, but he OPERATED AT CAUSE in doing so. He did not HAVE to do it - he ELECTED to do it. He can now see that the Overt Motivator sequence is NOT a natural law �

It is only a mental mechanism which he foolishly chooses to employ and the reason he is foolish is because in employing the mental mechanism, he is COVERING UP the fact that he is BASICALLY GOOD and will now punish himself in various ways for having done harm to another dynamic. Thus his ENEMY FORMULA GOES OUT.

In order to commit an overt he has to NOT-IS his and the other being’s basic goodness. Thus he has COVERED UP � Who he really is.

Thus the enemy formula � Find Out Who You Really Are � for people who do harm.

It is especially applicable to those who do constant harm because they have lost ALL of their ability to withhold � meaning restrain themselves from commiting overts.

When his enemy formula goes out, he believes himself and others are bad. He can get into a state wherein he is believing so much that he is bad, that he loses ALL of his ability to WITHHOLD himself from harming others and then you have an SP - a person who harms others all day long every day. He cannot restrain himself at all and has given up even trying to. He has gone into apathy about restraining himself from doing harm.

In this state he has gone completely into agreement with his case, he has become his case, to such a degree that he can no longer see his basic self any more - the being is gone - completely COVERED UP. There is no distance between himself and his case because he is BEING his case.

And so he cannot DIFFERENTIATE between himself and his case and thus get some distance between it and himself and so he confuses all case thoughts as being his thoughts and so he accepts those thoughts as his own thoughts and acts on them. Thus he dramatizes his case and commits overts and harms others regularly. And so his Enemy formula is out and thus his ethics are out.

Getting back to our story with our friends daughter - I hatted her on all of the above.

I spent about 10 hours with her doing all the above and then she went home.

About a month later I got a call from her mother. Her mother asked me - what did you do with my daughter? Nobody here recognizes her anymore, I dont recognize her anymore, she is a totally different person than she has ever been. She has discontinued all criminal relationships she used to have, she no longer takes drugs, she has found all new decent friends, she likes Scientology and goes to the org to do ethics and takes services. What happened?

A final word on the Overt Motivator sequence is that in order to commit an overt, one has to practice Alter-Isness and Not-Isness. He tells himself a lie that the other fellow is bad, thus making it ok to commit the overt. He also will Not-Is his own basic goodness and the other fellow’s basic goodness just before his decision to harm the other fellow. Thus his enemy formula goes out because now he has COVERED UP who he really is and who the other fellow really is.

The famous quote - We have met the enemy and he is us has application here.

The mental mechanism called Overt Motivator sequence, also has a lot to do with freedom and entrapment. Since a being is basically good, he will reduce his abilities if he finds himself acting badly. The Enslavers know and use this against a being, to get him to entrap and enslave himself. They know if they can get him to act badly that he will entrap himself. Thus rising above Overt Motivator sequence is required to attain and maintain freedom. A primary trap, if not the only trap, is getting a being to entrap himself, to hold himself down � and getting him to commit overts would be a prime method of getting him to do this to himself.

The real way you get Ethics in is auditing. Ethics does not get rid of case, auditing does.

All Ethics does is it gets the person to restrain himself from dramatizing his case and thereby committing overts � until he can get auditing on that case and get rid of it.

Let’s say a man has an impulse to kill babies. He uses Ethics to restrain himself from killing babies until he can get auditing to get rid of the impulse to kill babies. Once auditing gets rid of the impulse to kill babies � he no longer has to restrain himself from it because that impulse is now gone � and so now his Ethics are really in. It now takes no effort on his part to be Ethical about babies, it comes naturally because he now has no impulse to harm them.

With his physical youthfulness, Oskar manipulates his ignorant mother Agnes to assume that Matzerath was the cause of this unnecessary accident. Egocentric Oskar takes advantage of his mother Agnesfs ignorance and attains his own freedom make decisions autonomously based on his utmost pleasure. This is when Oskar shows the hedonistic Rasputin in him who lacks empathy, sensitivity and even sympathy. Lacking these essential human qualities and because of his insanity, Oskar consequently ends up killing two of his presumptive fathers. During Matzerathfs funeral, Oskar owns up to killing his presumptive father with the Party pin because he gwas sick of dragging a father around with him all his lifeh (pg.404). This exemplifies the indifference and self-centeredness of Oskar and proves how he takes resort to drastic and extreme measures in order for him to survive through all his confrontations.

The theft and the sly ways of living the prisoners lead are examples of human loathsomeness and inevitable egocentricity. Oskar also acted in an egocentric way, but it is significantly different to the prisoners because Oskars egocentricity where always based on his desire and greed and that was the way he always got what he wanted. Oskar seems to like evil, and he puts temptations on people and brings out the Rasputin in everyone. Oskar has the time to spare and entertains himself by scoping Jan to see if he steals.

I screamed first into the frosty night that new snow might fall at last, and then into the glass, the dense glass, the precious glass, the cheap glass, the transparent glass, the partitioning glass, the glass between worlds, the virginal, mystical glass that separated Jan Bronski from the ruby necklace, cutting a hole just right for Janfs glove size, which was well known to me. I made the cutout fall inward like a trap door, like the gate of heaven or the gate of hell and Jan did not flinch, his fine leather hand emerged from his coat pocket and moved heavenward; from heaven or hell it removed a necklace whose rubies would have satisfied all the angels in the world, including the fallen. The prisoners in the camps in some circumstances need to steal in order for them to survive such as the spoons and knives to eat their food rations. Although the concept of survival is apparent throughout both books, however, their situations and problems are dramatically different.

Both of the books show amoralism in the characters to reveal what kinds of uncivilized things humans do when confronted with unwanted circumstances. Egocentricity takes over characters in both of the books, but it is also evident that there are more life threatening situations in Survival in Auschwitz and than in The Tin Drum. These inhuman actions make these two books so effective because without them, these two books would just be pitiable, depressing stories where the readers would sympathetic for the characters. The egocentric characters intensify the astonishment and keep the readers interest in the books. The authors, Grass and Levi narrows down and depicts the truths of human nature, that as long as you survive it is acceptable. Morality constitutes the rules of a society to maintain a peaceful society. However, the two books reflect the evil and cruelties of life, and when one notices the iniquities, self-centeredness is the only way to avoid and survive through unwanted situations.
