The Paul Hofmann Jazz Quartet attracted an audience of about 150 members. The
average audience member was about 65 years of age. The small and cozy concert
seemed to captivate its audience, transporting it back in time.
The Fredonia Opera House most closely resembles a Proscenium style theatre.
The stage is framed with beautiful ornamental woodwork. The Opera House is well over
one hundred years old, however it appears that time has not touched it. The atmosphere
was extremely warm and inviting. The Fredonia Opera House was the perfect venue for
the intimate concert of The Paul Hofmann Jazz Quartet.
Paul Hofmann was very personable and friendly. He took on the role of “Host”
for the evening. He talked to the audience a great deal, explaining the significance and
history of several pieces. It was easy to see that all four musicians love what they do.
While the group played they appeared to be lost in the music. They were so involved in
their work. All four musicians were practically dancing as they played, almost unaware
that anyone was watching. The quartet played in beautiful harmony without flaw.
The evening’s performance had a summer theme “A Jazz Celebration of
Summer”. The selections had titles such as Hot House, Barbados, Summer Night, and
You are my Sunshine. The piece “Hot House” gave the audience a slow almost woozy
kind of feeling. The song, which is about one hundred years old, made you think of a lazy
summer day in New Orleans. It also made the audience appreciate the air conditioned
Opera House. “Barbados “ was a wonderful piece filled with a medium paced tropical
rhythm.
The quartet performed two versions of “Summer Night” the first version was a
very slow ballad that was very romantic sounding. The second version of “Summer
Night” was played at a faster pace. The second version of this piece did not give the
audience the same romantic feeling that eh first one did. Paul Hofmann and Bob Stata
also performed a duet. They played a version of “You are my Sunshine” which oddly
enough sounded almost nothing like the song most people are familiar with. Only very
small portions of the song were recognizable.
The concert was an uplifting and enjoyable experience. It was not necessary to be
a jazz fan to appreciate the talented musicians of The Paul Hofmann Jazz Quartet. The
concert was followed by lovely reception held on the stage of The Opera House.
