The Producers opened on Broadway in 000 to the wildest rave reviews a musical comedy has seen in the history of Broadway theatre. It won a record 1 Tony Awards in June of that year. The Mel Brooks smash was based on the movie of the same name with the addition of several characters and sub-plots. I saw a performance by the second national touring company of the show in Chicago in November 00. It was the first time I had ever seen a musical performed live onstage, and it proved to be a very educational experience.

The Ford Center for the Performing Arts is a huge theatre located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district. Its far larger than most of the Broadway theatres in New York. I noticed right away the huge effect the large performance space has on the production. In the past I have seen only plays performed in close quarters, where one can really identify with the actors from a close distance. I dont think the size of this theatre contributed positively to the show.




The show was good, and very entertaining, but the large venue made it seem very impersonal. The seats were even at close proximity to the stage for that huge theatre. It made the actors seem so far away and difficult to connect with. The added space seemed to act as a wall between me, and my enjoyment of the performance.

The Producers is a fantastic musical romp about a forgotten Broadway producer who, with the help of an accountant friend of his, sets out to produce the biggest flop in Broadway history with plans of taking the money they make and taking a trip for two to Rio. Of course this whole scheme only works if the show is a flop, because the plan is to sell a thousand percent of the show to the backers, who are a group of little old ladies that Max Biallystock has to schtup to get money from them. If the show is a hit there is no way to pay off the backers. To be sure the show is a flop, they produce Springtime For Hitler. The show is practically a love letter to Hitler. To be really sure they fill the audience with Jews and pay off the critics to pan the show. Naturally the show is a hit and they go to jail! They are eventually pardoned by the governor for bringing song and dance into the hearts of every murderer, rapist, and sex maniac in Sing-Sing. The set out to have a happy and honest career together again on Broadway.

The show was very entertaining. The costumes won Tony awards. The actors were top-of-the-line, right off the New York stage. I enjoyed the performance, save for my issue with the size of the theatre. My advice to anyone considering going to see the show to run to the theatre now. Its running on Broadway to packed houses every night. The original stars, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are set to return to the show in January. The show is sure to sell out, even in these huge, impersonal theatres, people still flock to see what will go down in the record books as the most entertaining, and most decorated musical in recent Broadway history.

The official cash rate is an overnight interest rate and is the Reserve Bank of

Australia’s (RBA’s) key monetary policy lever. The RBA conducts open market

Operations (buying and selling Commonwealth government securities) to maintain the cash rate at its pre-specified target level.

All other money market and bond market rates are related to the cash rate after allowing for maturity risk, credit risk and interest rate expectations.




The cash market is a market for the deposit and lending of funds overnight. Banks, financial institutions and large companies will deposit any surplus cash in the market in order to earn interest.

The interest rate on these funds (i.e. the cash rate) is determined by the demand + supply for funds.

The demand for cash is determined by the reserves of cash (exchange settlement funds) held by banks in their Exchange Settlement Accounts (ESAs) with the Reserve Bank.

These funds are used on a daily basis by the banks in settling transactions between themselves. The Reserve Bank stipulates that these accounts must not be overdrawn (and pays nominal interest on them), so banks typically keep reserve balances in their accounts to meet unexpected requirements for cash.

The supply of cash in the short-term money market is determined by the Reserve Bank. It has monopoly control over the supply of cash. Monetary policy refers to actions by the Reserve Bank of Australia (the federal government’s principle monetary authority) to influence the supply and cost of credit in the economy. The main tool of monetary policy is the Reserve Bank’s use of market operations (the buying and selling of Commonwealth Government Securities or CGS) to influence the official cash rate or interest rate paid on highly liquid deposits in the cash market or short term money market.

Demanding things be given to her such as the butter churn top when she had no real use for it, only wanting it for display. Dee went to far when she wanted to take the hand stitched quilts the mother had been saving for Maggie to inherit upon her marriage. When she was initially turned down in a polite way Dee attacked her sister Maggie whom was always intimidated by her saying that she wouldn?t appreciate them and insulting both Maggie and her mother in saying that they didn?t know nor understand their heritage. To both Dee?s and Maggie?s shock the mother said no and took the quilts shoving them back at Maggie strongly saying to Dee that they were Maggie?s and that she needed to pick others. This enraged Dee letting that be known by storming out of the house with no quilts hopped into her car and drove away.




In conclusion the hard working Mother of ?Everyday Use? reaches a silent goal by saying the unthinkable ?No? to her daughter Dee, standing up for both Maggie an herself. After all you can only push a person so far and it seems that Dee had pushed her mother far enough. The mother and certainly the readers felt very proud and triumphant when Dee was finally stood up to. Being a tough and hard working person does not always mean that they know how to set boundaries and not allow other to take advantage of them especially when the person walking all over them is someone they love. Berkeley Networks, a receiver of Intel’s financing, is a start-up company who is developing promising open switch architecture to compete with the routers and switches of the dominant market segment players. However, through numerous miscommunications between the managements of Berkeley Networks and Intel and the inquiry by an outside suitor for a possible acquisition of Berkeley Networks, there have been several problems. Keith Larson, manager of Intel’s Corporate Business Development Group (CBD), is faced with a major decision that can dramatically affect Intel’s position in network interfacing. What is Intel’s strategy with their venture fund?




Intel Corporation is faced with changing technological trends that it must understand and implement if it is to pose a serious strategic advantage in Intel’s market segments. Intel captures current and future technological trends through its efforts in venture capital funding. Through Intel’s capital stature, they are able to support, through their Corporate Business Development Group, staff that manage the variety of invents in technologies and services related to Intel’s product offering.

At first glance, Intel started to protect themselves with a stable source of quality inputs, for its design and manufacturing processes, by investing in external companies. This was a smart move by Intel because it allowed them, through their financing leverage, to clearly set a standard of what kind of inputs they desired through suppliers. The preemptive quality check assured Intel’s products the highest quality set to specifications.

Intel’s most important exploration into venture funding happened in the 10’s where they started to adopt a “market eco-system” approach. With major technological innovations on the horizon, Intel smartly adopted polices of financing where they sought after software and hardware developers that related to Intel products, in turn creating opportunities for both parties. Intel’s CBD group focused their efforts on companies that would not necessarily provide a monetary return but companies that would support their strategic vision. Intel was making a great leverage move by aggressively growing their investment portfolios into companies where they can take advantage of their products on the basis that, “What does Intel get out of the money they supply?”

Very few start-up firms, which Intel was aiming at, had significant capital to support the necessary research and design needed to complete most projects. I believe Intel knew this fact and indirectly took advantage of these start-ups in order to protect their future interests in maintaining a competitive advantage in their market. With no other choice but to acquire loans and possibly fault on the loans, many firms, with cash flaunting in their face, accepted Intel’s offer with the promise that both companies would benefit. The end results in the venture fund between Intel and a start-up was one of two things (One) Intel would realize that incorporating a startup into their own business would benefit them more than continually investing in an external company. (Two) As Intel continues to draw information from a start-up firm, the information will eventually become exhausted and as Steven Nachtsheim says, “It may realized that it’s time to cut bait when it no longer makes sense.”

Intel’s mission to acquire a diversity of external investments has led them to classify investments in two tiers. Tier one investments are those that provide Intel with a “direct” strategic impact and tier two investments provide Intel with “potential” strategic benefit. Intel’s obvious strategy in their venture funding is to satisfy their strategic interests into gaining insight into new technologies. While positive financial returns on investments are not frowned upon, Intel will compromise monetary value if an investment satisfies an interest in strategic importance. In opinion, behind Intel’s goodwill approach is a side where Intel is acquiring all aspects of their market segment and indirectly creating an environment where all competitors, without enormous sums of capital, cannot compete. How well is that strategy working?

Intel’s venture funding strategy is working very well for them. Through their acquisition they have gained insight into many technologies that Intel itself does not want to work on. Intel knows that they are benefiting from their acquisitions because they are aggressively pursuing more acquisitions to diversify their portfolio. In return for their funding Intel receives the latest technological innovations and also puts themselves in a situation to dominate a particular market segment.

Why did Intel decide to invest in Berkeley Networks?

In the beginning, Yavatkar, one of Intel’s engineers, was trying to fade away from the vertical networking architecture and move Intel towards a more powerful horizontal networking architecture. Although both Intel and Berkeley Networks were using Microsoft’s Windows NT operating system, Intel themselves did not produce the switches needed to complete their project. Berkeley Networks, through the due diligence of Intel, proved to be much more advanced in their design of switches. Intel decided to invest in Berkeley Networks on the basis that Larson and Yavatkar’s review of the company and its products showed Intel valuable exposure to developments in programmable network technology that Yavatkar’s team had been working on internally, as well as the potential to indirectly spread the adoption of Intel’s new IA chips. The desired result would be the creation of a new market segment for Intel.

Berkeley Networks, with the use of Microsoft’s Windows NT operating system, was developing a breakthrough technology that was capable of generating new communications architecture. No other start-up company, including Intel, had the design or product that BN was working on. Berkeley Networks and Intel both understood the “potential” strategic success in this new communications arena. Intel’s indirect vision of controlling all aspects of technology led them to invest in BN because they felt an investment would not only grant them insight to BN’s technologies but also a controlling share of all products produced. Intel knew that if BN’s designs were adopted they would be the founder of a new revolution of networking technology. Intel saw this opportunity not only in a strategic matter but also in the future monetary rewards it would permit.

Why did Berkeley Networks invite Intel to invest?

Berkeley Networks was trying to improve the speed of feed into and out of a switch. BN accomplished this by loosely integrating Microsoft’s Windows NT operating system with their own programming tools. After a successful first round of financing, BN was now looking for a second round of financing to complete their project. Berkeley Networks founder, president, and CEO, Ravi Sethi was focusing his attention on a venture fund that would allow both firms to benefit from each other’s knowledge, skill and product base. The corporation of choice, for Sethi, was Intel.

Sethi believed that the relationship between Intel and Berkeley Network’s would enhance any products and create a synergy between the two firms. Aside from the corporate strategies that each of the firms discussed, Berkeley Network’s secretly wanted to use their relationship with Intel to get closer to Microsoft. Since Microsoft’s Windows NT operating systems was the base of BN’s switch architecture, Sethi wanted BN to have a strategic advantage over competition by having a backdoor into the system in which is was based upon.

What is Intel learning from its investment in Berkeley Networks?

The relationship between Intel and Berkeley Networks was different from any other relationship Intel had participated in, with the fact that the deal was compressed relative to Intel’s normal investment timetable. Although the deal was concluded in less time, Yavatkar’s support for the deal, backed by his technical discussions with BN engineers provided Intel with a degree of confidence. This degree of confidence, however, was short lived.

Prescribed by the short nature of the deal conclusion, there were many issues, not discussed in the deal completion process, which Intel would face. As Larson recalled, “there were no specific ‘gives or gets’ related to Intel’s licensing or OEMing of BN’s technology.” Intel found it very difficult to fulfill its goal of learning more about the switches and the horizontal networking technologies. Despite the fact that Intel was not allowed to serve on the board of BN, all information was acquired through direct meetings with BN’s engineers and/or management. Unknown by Intel, BN was intentionally withholding strategic information because they feared that the corporate conglomerate would take advantage of their technology and not give due respect. Human resource systems, policies and practices have great influence over an organizations culture. For that reason, the examination and diagnosis of HR policies are essential to any successful acquisition. During due diligence, a careful and thorough HR examination is prescribed. Workforce issues are a critical variable, but often ignored. After the examination, a new set of HR policies must be devised to fit the needs of the newly formed company. The traditional grievance process for workplace disputes, are rarely the best means of dispute resolution. Company A has the traditional grievance process, which is expensive, disruptive and protracted. The goal is to add a voluntary peer mediation component to the traditional employee grievance policy.

The new HR policy will encompass a mediation-based problem solving technique that creates effective solutions while improving the relationship between the parties. The process separates the person from the grievance; it explores all problems to define issues clearly; brainstorms possibilities and opportunities; and uses some mutually agreed upon standard to reach a solution. In closing, our combined policy plan focuses on mending the relationship between the parties by finding a compromise solution that meets the interests of both parties. This will increase employer � employee participation, which is very important after a merger or acquisition. Lastly, research suggests, that agreements achieved through mediation are more likely to last because the parties themselves play a major role in fashioning the agreement.




In addition to grievance and mediation policies, when merging two companies corporate policies it is best to do best of breed of the policies with regards to the new corporate culture. The policies on flextime and telecommuting need to match the new corporate culture. An overnight change will alienate all employees of both companies. The goal is to bring the policies into alignment with out disruption and strife.

The first step will be to analyze the policies and the effect they have had on the two companies. Since company B does not have the policies for flextime and telecommuting they are the control group. Gathering historical data on similar topics from both companies will give the comparison that is needed. Comparing productivity between the companies in similar departments will allow the decisions to be based on relevant data. Other data that must be included is some interviews with employees regarding the policies to get a good feel for how the employees will take to any changes.

Once the data has been gathered and analyzed any productivity gains can be seen. Both flextime and telecommuting are employee empowering items. Taking either away from the current employees that have them may mean that the company will lose some of the experienced staff that they already have. The only real possibility of removing either policy is if the current corporate culture does not allow for them and the productivity gains are not significant. If the gains are significant but are not in the corporate culture it will give the ammunition needed to up channel the change to upper management to change the culture for all.

Once the policies are decided on then a phased approach will be the best implantation plan. By considering there will be some give and take between the current policies, the best way to phase in the changes is to start by implementing the employee positive changes while integrating the negative changes in such away that the positive changes are highlighted. Either way there will be some upset employees and some level of discord; however, when properly handled the policies can increase productivity through tremendously. Employee empowerment normally increases employee satisfaction and a happy employee is more productive. As stated earlier, there will be some upset employees and some discord during a merger; therefore, the written code of conduct must be taken into account with the impending acquisition, as the code of conduct will set the new corporate culture. There are several recommended approaches as to how a manager can implement the code of conduct. The end goal is to enable the manager to control the corporate culture. The code of conduct outlines the company rules, mission and company creed and will take the newly formed company to the next level.

Forcing a new culture on our employees will have a devastating effect, unless management controls the process. Research has shown that one-half of all mergers fail due to not controlling the human aspect of the cultural change. Therefore, management must include the new and improved Human Resource policy and the new code of conduct into all the levels of management in order to make the change effective.

The former company’s codes must be compared and analyzed in order to understand their similarities and differences, decide how these similarities and differences are valued by the employees. This section of the report will deal with our findings from the two cultures and our method to implement the new code in our department.

Our present company has a clear and concise written code of conduct. All employees know what is expected of them and what to expect from others within the organization. We have been informed that the company acquiring us has no written code of conduct. This ambiguity in the new code of conduct is a source of great stress to our employees and this management team. Our research has shown that we need to understand the new cultural values and the effect it will have on our people, if we are to accomplish our performance goals.

In our research of this subject, an article by Robert J. Thomas, points out the need for “cultural due diligence” for assessing the cultural differences between our two companies. It is a process for “measuring the gap” between both tangible and intangible values of the codes of conduct. This process takes into account the “unwritten rules of behavior and views on human motivation.” It allows us to graph the out come on a grit to access a plan of action. As the new company does not have a written code, it will give the needed information allowing us to communicate the change to our people. Edmond Dossa-Sossavi in an article entitled Management in a Merger/ Acquisition Environment demonstrates that communication is the most important factor in controlling this issue. Further, in an article by AON Insights, entitled Protecting Your Workforce, stresses the need to “communicate the case for change from their perspective, not the corporations.” They further advise, to measure the results of the communications, and continue communications until the change is complete. In an article interview with Fred Hasson, President and CEO of Pharmacia Corporation, he states the need for top-down management buy in to the new culture for success. According to Mr. Hasson along with the need for strait forward communications, Management needs to be committed to the new cultural rules and behavior to show how it helps get good results. Mr. Hasson states “it’s important that supervisors internalize it before they’re asked to pass it down to the next level below them.” With this information in mind this management came up with the following recommendations for managing a planned change.

1. Have the HR department perform a Cultural Due Diligence assessment to identify the gaps between the two cultures.

. HR and Top management need to convey a procedure for management to internalize their personal code of conduct.

. This information can then be passed down to middle management to determine which persons can and can’t adapt to the new cultural code.

4. Management who accepts the change should be utilized as Change Agents and those who can’t, must be removed from the company.

a. For complete buy in, management needs to show the personnel, by example, that this change will cause favorable results.

5. Communications from upper management must filter down until the change is complete.

6. The HR department and management must refreeze the new culture and code of conduct in all future company dealings.

As stated earlier, in the midst of all the company changes and the employee’s negative perceptions or realities due to the merger, management has to keep the company moving forward. As a result, with any revamp of HR policies and/or implementing new policies after acquiring a company will cause some level of uncertainty, fear and conflict within the organization’s employees. However, these Human Resource responsibilities mentioned in this paper is only a small portion of the HR policies that exist in most companies and are vital to a company’s future. As mentioned in other papers, we would alleviate some of the stresses associated with company mergers and changes of HR policies by effective communication, which shows the company respects the employees, appreciates them and needs them in its efforts to move forward. One of management’s goals is to keep productivity up and find ways to keep the employees productive during the acquisition. The only way to accomplish this is by effective, timely, and honest communication.

Question- Prejudice and courage are powerful themes in To kill a mocking bird. Show how Harper Lee deals with them in her novel.

The author of this well aclaimed book, Harper Lee was born in nineteen twenty six in Monroeville in Alabama. In this aspect she is similar to Scout, also in addition, Harpers father was also a lawyer. To kill a mocking bird was written in the nineteen sixties just at the beginning of the black civil rights movement. However, the novel is set around the nineteen thirties. This was the time when Alabama was at the peak of racial tension, thus most events in the book could have been from real experiences.

This novel contains many differents aspects of life at that time. To kill a mocking bird is not just a story of racism; it is a story of childhood, lessons in life, diplomacy, respect, prejudice and courage. When read, it proves how much the world has changed. It still discriminates eg. women still have less power than men and unfortunately some people are still racist, but things have changed for the better.




Slavery was abolished about one hundred years ago today. Slaves were treated with no respect at all, like animals. They worked to the bone with no pay just because of the colour of their skin. Black people were shipped along the seas to serve the British or Americans. Although slavery was abolished by the nineteen thirties, black people were still considered as second class citizens compared to white people. Blacks and whites were very much segregated from each other. Seperate churches and even seperate toilets were made for each race. At that time, white people always overpowered black people. This obviously meant there was much prejudice between each race and this lead to many injustices for black people. To kill a mocking bird only tells one of many stories.

In this well-written novel prejudice is shown in many ways; though primarily through racism. Courage also plays a very important role in the story. There are different types of courage. For instance, basic courage like when the children ran past the Radley place and moral courage which Scout has to find in order to face her friends without retaliating, when they call her father names.The most difficult form of courage to possess is the courage to take on and carry through a task which is cetain to end in failure. When Atticus takes on the Tom Robinson case. He knew he wouldnt win because of the colour of his clients skin but he went ahead with it any way.

When Scout asked why hes defending a negro, he replied

For a number of reasons. The main one is, if i didnt i couldnt hold my head up in town, i coudnt represent this county in the legislature, i coudnt even tell you or Jem not to do something again.

At this point, Atticus mixed his courage with his own principle of pride. Unfortunately, not many in Maycomb held this point of view.

Not only does Atticus suffer from verbal and physical abuse so do the children. Courage is shown when Scouts tried to fight off Cecil Jacobs because he called Scouts father a nigger defender. Not even knowing what that means Scout was putting her fists up but then resisted remembering what she had promised her father about not fighting. So prejudice is also shown here against the Finch family because Atticus defends a negro in court.

Prejudice is shown in chapter two when Scout first goes to school. The teacher realises Scout is more advanced than anyone else in the class due to the fact that Scout reads at home. She told Scout to stop reading at home because her father does not know how to teach.

Now tell your father not to teach you anymore. Its best to begin reading with a fresh mind. You tell him ill take over from here and try to undo the damage.

She was quite angry at Scout because it did not fit in with the education system.

Courage is shown when the children ran past the Radley place. Jems trousers got caught in the fence when he was trying to escape because the children heard gunshots. More courage is shown when Jem ran back to the fence to get the trousers back and then found out they had been folded and fixed. This was Boo Radleys gesture.

Atticus Finch later shows more courage when he shoots the mad dog in chapter ten. The children are very surprised and happy in a way because they thought he couldnt do anything.

All of a sudden he just relaxed all over, an it looked like that gun was a part of him . . . an he did it so quick like . . . I hafta aim for ten minutes fore i can hit something . . .

They were very proud of him and suddenly changed their tune about their father.

Mrs. Dubose passes away in chapter eleven. In a way the children are happy because they do not have to read to her anymore. They showed prejudice against here because she was rude about them and their father but only because they didnt know what she was going through. When Atticus explains to them that,

I wanted you to see something about her- I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. Its when you know youre licked before you begin but you begin anyway.

This is another one of Atticus lessons of life for his children. He tries to explain that Mrs. Dubose showed an enormous amount of courage. She knew she was to die soon but didnt want to die beholden to nothing and nobody. She didnt want to die a prisoner to morphine. She was in such great pain but stuck to her pride and refused to die addicted to morphine. The children soon realise things from her piont of view and still have their own judgement of her but it is slightly triggered.

Prejudice is shown another time when Calpurnia decides to take the children to church with her. She wanted the children to see how Tom Robinson was respected in his own community. But in the church the children received some hostility from one member, Lula.

You aint got no business bringin white chillun here- they got thier own church, aint it Miss Cal? They were unfairly judged just because of the colour of their like many at that time. But fortunately Lula was the only one that received them in that way; the rest of the church accepted them in a very welcoming manner, as the children of the well-respected Mr. Finch.

Mr. Finch shows courage in chapter fifteen when he guards Tom Robinsons prison cell because of knowledge that the Lynch mob will try to kill Tom that night.

You know what we want. Get aside from the door Mr. Finch. a member of the lynch mob said.

Atticus replied, You can turn around and go home again, Walter.

That wasnt easy to say to about five men that were about to kill someone.

In chapter twenty one, the trial finishes with a verdict. Tom Robinson is seen as guilty. This verdict is influenced by prejudice. It is obvious Tom Robinson is not guilty but the society doesnt allow Tom Robinson to be freed because he is black. In a community where no matter how poor, how unmannered and even how stupid a person is; white people were ALWAYS considered better than black. Tom Robinson was obviously not guilty but one of the main reasons is that Mayellawas hit on the right side of her face. A right handed person would naturally hit a person on the left part of their face and Tom Robinson only has a right arm. Bob Ewell stupidly reveals he is left handed unaware that this would now play a big part in the trial.

Aunt Alexandra has her own point of view on things. She is very opinionated. She shows prejudice against Calpurnia because she is black and she thinks it is not right for a black woman to raise white children. She also thinks she cant raise them properly but doesnt realise how much the children love Cal like a mother and how much she loves them like her own children. The women of Maycomb show prejudice against black people at one of their tea parties. They talk with great sympathy of the Mrunas (an African tribe) but thenshow thier disgust to Atticus defending a negro. They failed to understand why he would want to defend Tom Robinson.

In chapter twenty three, Bob Ewell discriminates over Atticus by spitting on his face. He did this because Atticus defended his enemy, the defendant in Bobs lie.

Boo Radley was shown prejudice by many people in Maycomb, especially the children. Because of his past, they thought he wanted to harm everyone. That he was very angry inside and they even had thier own interpretations on how he looked.

Jem said he was, There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time but they ve never seen him before!

From what I have written in the above, prejudice and courage play a very big role in the well-written novel To kill a mocking bird. The discrimination of black people outlines the prejudice portrayed in the book. In the due course of seventy years, we have been enabled to see the dramatic change in the world. We are all taught that we should not only judge people because of the colour of their skin, their backround or intelligence. We should assess people by thier views and opinions of the world around us. We should only judge people because of their personalities. It is such a disgrace how white people treated black people and sometimes vice versa. People refused the fact that we are all the same colour when we turn out the light, and it is such a shame that society still uses prejudice in our lives; how people who have comitted a crime and have a criminal record are considered different and have less chance of getting a job. But we have ALL comitted a crime in our lives but not all of us suffer the same consequences.

Harper Lee includes courage and prejudice in an almost innocent way . She tries and successfully gets through the innocent message that courage and prejudice are a part of life, not matter how different a life backround is. She includes courage and prejudice through the children and reveals to us the way parents handle it with their children. To kill a mocking bird is by far an outstanding novel, thoughtfully and beautifully written.

Patricia Piccinini is an artist of our time � and some of her works do mainly focus on the ethics of embryonic stem cell usage, cloning, and genetic manipulation. However, the ways in which her works are confronting, or shocking, can be explored in many ways.




One of the works that I found most interesting was the first one that I encountered � Still Life with Stem Cells, a sculptural work depicting a young girl, startlingly real to life, playing with objects clearly identifiable as humanoid by their shape and human characteristics � a depiction of the manipulation of undifferentiated stem cells.

A question that must be posed regarding this work however, is that of Piccinini’s choice in the manifestation of her subject matter. Why is it a little girl playing with the embryonic stem cells, why are the stem cells portrayed so hideously?

Piccinini’s work is unique in that it neither condones nor condemns this new technology that confronts us today. Instead, it provides us with insight into issues that we may not have considered before. In “Still Life” one may ask if the little girl was a deliberate warning against this technology being something like a knife in a child’s hands. This is a painting done by William Harnett. The name of this portrait is called “A Smoke Backstage.” This is an trompe l’oeil painting. The painting is made to look real. It’s french for “fool the eye.” Paintings like this impress me because they look real. It’s dimensions are 78.5. Some of the elements I’ll be talking about are line, shape, texture, color, emphasis, and movement. These aspects are covered in chapter four and five.

The first element of art I will be telling about is line. In this painting, line is being used in a variety of ways. The line of the table, is setting the boundary for this picture. The package and newspaper help define the three-dimensional view. The part that you inhale through the pipe helps set the line and completes the pipe and definition.

Shape is also a very important element used in this painting. By looking at the painting, I could see the shape at the base of the pipe. From the colors and textures apart from the base of the table. The pipe has more of a geometric shape. The tobacco package in the middle of the table is using up mass in the painting.

I think there is a variety of texture being used. First, the actual textures in the painting is the table, newspaper, and the long end of the pipe. There smooth and we could feel them by touching. The simulated textures in the painting would be the opened end of the tobacco package, the tobacco at the end of the pipe, and the pipe in general. It looks real, but if we would touch it, it would feel like smooth paint.




By looking at this picture, I found that it had a lot of linear perspective and atmospherical perspective. This painting has a foreground, middle ground, and a background. The newspaper appears closer in the foreground and they tend to decrease in size and vanish off into the background. There is a lot of wide variety of color and detail in the foreground of this painting which is also known as atmospherical perspective. Because the changing of color, value, and detail gives it an illusion of depth.

By observing and studying this picture, I also found that a variety of colors are being used throughout the painting. Color is mostly being used in the middle of the painting. The colors are light blue, cream, yellow, brown, and dark brown. The light blue is a nice contrast compared to all the dark colors.

There is also a lot of emphasis and subordination that is being used throughout this painting. The figure that drew my attention to this picture was the pipe leaning up against the tobacco box. This is a form called focal point. I think the newspaper was a subordination. It helped create a neutral area of lesser interest that kept me from being distracted from areas of less emphasis.

Movement is also another key aspect in this painting. Movement is occurring from the bottom of the painting to the top. The pipe extending from the bottom left to all the way back to the top right. Directional force is causing me to look from the bottom of the picture to the top.

By looking at this painting, I have come to the conclusion that this is a form of representational art. Most of William Harnett’s paintings are personally expressive. I don’t know what the meaning of this painting means, but I’m guessing it’s representing a place to relax.

This article was almost inspirational to me. It showed a different way to use portfolios as well as to get parents more involved in their children’s education. This article was about using portfolios in math as a tool for better assessment of students. It talks about how portfolios show both the strength and weaknesses of the child but more than that the progress the child has made throughout the year. Instead of having a one chance test the student has the opportunity to really master a concept and see through the changing portfolio how much he or she has grown. The point of the portfolio was to put more weight on the progress of the students than the final answer and not try to focus so much on a letter grade as well as bring the home and school closer together.


To make the portfolio curriculum the math teachers designed a standard based strategy but not in the traditional way. Instead of starting with the lesson the started with the goal wand worked their way backwards to create an interactive plan for the kids to do to reach it. In this case the teachers already knew that they wanted the kids to learn information needed for the standards. So they just worked from there on how to achieve that goal through what assignments to give and methods to use in teaching. As I was reading this I thought what a wonderful idea it would be to use this in my classroom. Using a portfolio seems like a good assessment tool as well as a way to help the kids in class stay organized and on top of their work. As the article points out it is a way to see who may need not help or a different method of teaching as well as who can move onto more challenging things. I think that it can be a risky thing to do as well though. If you yourself are not organized than the portfolio project may collapse and you will have a hard time trying to rework your curriculum. To make the portfolios work you would need to have a lot of patience and a lot of time. When talking about the steps for an assessment about Kristine Britton’s class working with different size pipe cleaners trying to make triangles it was very objective at times and seemed very time consuming. Christian Science is the practice of healing illness and disease strictly through prayer and the belief that all disease are caused through a reflection on one’s character. Christian scientists do not go to doctors when they are sick, they pray. Many people have died from their illness because the simple fact that they neglect to help themselves or others through the use of modern medical practices. In this discussion, the problem is with the dying children. These children of the Christian Science church seem to be neglected in the eyes of people who do go to doctors and do get help when they are ill. From the readings, I have discovered that the parents of these children are, in essence, murderers. However, I am split between the decision of right and wrong and who goes where.


On one side, I cannot judge these people for the way they decide to live their lives or for what they choose to believe in. On the other, these children do not have the choice to make themselves well, but end up suffering for what their parents believe. Being a parent requires that your children are the number one priority, and measures must be taken to ensure their health and well being… before your own. On top of these children dying and suffering, the parents are exempt under the law because this is a “religious” practice. I am a firm believer in the separation of church and state, but when children are dying, someone needs to step in and do something. The stories of the girl with a watermelon-sized tumor in her leg, the boy who died from untreated diabetes after months of suffering, make me cringe. Not only do these children technically die for their parents not for the religion, but also their parents try to hide and cover up the fact when someone is ill.

In my opinion, these children can be raised whichever way their parents see fit, but when the child’s life is in jeopardy or even suffering, there needs to be some intervention. As we know the number of Christian Science members is on the decline, someone has to realize that there needs to be some changes made. For instance, there needs to be some allowance for medical assistance, especially for the children. If changes cannot be made, there needs to be some type of regulation and protection for the kids. It is inhumane to allow these children to suffer in the name of God. I grew up in the Catholic Church and although there is a lot of things I have been taught I do not believe in, I do believe God promotes life and all things in it.

The movie “The Cell” allows you to take a close look at the reality of evil, where it comes from and how it feels, how it takes over an innocent life, and how it lurks as a possibility within each of us. The movie really deals with explaining what is going on inside the killers mind. At times I felt it hard to sympathize with Carl (the serial killer) because of his three distinct entities Carl as a child, a normal adult, and a serial killing monster. The child represented the timid and innocent Carl, the monster is the serial killing side, and the adult represents everything that is left of his normal mind. I would begin to feel bad for Carl, because in the movie we learn that his father psychologically and physically abused him as a child. However, the monster he became was so dominating in the movie, very demonic, and relentless on his drive to kill. The movie goes a step further by incorporating science fiction. The color changes from black and white, the different colored hues, the skip frames, the computer images and wormhole like tunnels. It at times made me feel disoriented, it was very dream like. I felt like I was in the middle of someone’s dream, to which at times it was a little confusing with all the imagery and symbolism going on. Yet, throughout the movie I felt like I was amongst an evil presence, a presence that could easily take me into its madness. Carl is a deeply disturbed individual and I for one seemed to over look that at times, due to later learning his background as a child. As I got further into the movie I felt a since of wanting to help him, to reach out to that innocent child like entity and save him. However, with doing so I feel like my sympathizing with him, I would find myself falling deeper into his psychic realm.


I feel because this movie takes you into the mind of a serial killer, those who do not understand psychology can learn about this specific mental illness that Carl has. Carl suffers from a rare form of Schizophrenia, to which was trigger by a seizure suffered during his baptism. While the accuracy of this can be debated, I believe that the portrayal was not done in bad taste. People can accurately see some of the actual symptoms of a person with this disease. Some of the inaccuracies I found was that the movie is based on the premise that in a California research facility a technique has been perfected, whereby someone can enter the subconscious mind of a comatose person, and interact with them. However, this is not new concept, no such technology exists. People may be mislead, in that such aids in psychology do exist. Also, Carl who has Whalen’s Infraction schizophrenia takes aspirin to subdue his hallucinations, this is misleading in that a severe case of Schizophrenia such has this must be treated with prescribed medications like antipsychotic drugs which are very affective in treating certain symptoms of Schizophrenia particularly hallucinations and delusions. Last, I found that not all Schizophrenics are necessarily violent in such a way that would make them a serial killer. However, Carl never really actively kills his victims he would systematically kill them by drowning them, so this might be an accurate depiction of a non-violent way of a schizophrenic serial killer. These were the three things in the movie that I found that might be misleading and not accurate. But I feel the movie tried to reach all aspects while still trying to make it entertaining.

The signs and symptoms vary from individual to individual, but all people with the disorder show one or more of the following symptoms Delusions, these are beliefs that are not true, such as feeling people are following or trying to hurt them, believing other people can read their minds, or beliefs that they have special powers or abilities. Bizarre behavior, this can be expressed in many different ways. In short, the individual behaves in ways that seem inappropriate or strange to other people. This form of the mental disorder caused Carl to hear voices that encouraged him to kill. Not only did the disease encourage him to kill, but it also caused him to treat his victims in a certain systematic fashion that relates to his childhood baptism. First, the killer would lock the innocent victim in a glass cage and then proceed to drown her. In this way, his prey undergoes a similar experience to his baptism. Second, after the individual has already been killed, Carl places the body in pool of bleach, which changes the skin white. This bleaching relates to the purity one should attain after a baptism. Another effect the disorder placed on Carl was it created three versions of himself in his mind. This is clearly evident when Jennifer Lopez enters his mind and sees Carl as a child, a normal adult, and a serial killing monster an idealized version of himself like a king in his twisted kingdom where he can indulge in anything he wants.
