Recent events have left many parents and other Americans asking “Why?” A high school

in South Carolina is at the center of this national crisis. Local authorities stormed this high

school, after receiving a tip that a student was selling drugs in the school. From what is known,




they may of had good cause to perform this task. The problem lies within how they executed this

drug bust. The police swarmed the school with guns drawn, drug and bomb sniffing dogs

attacking, and students being commanded to “hit the ground!” Why such force?

It all comes back to the school shootings that have been terrifying our nation for the last

five years. The most notable of all, was the Columbine High School rampage in Colorado. After

April 0th, 1, the date of the Columbine shooting, many schools nationwide have changed

their policies to prevent these massacres from happening again. Local, State, and Federal

governments have also become actively involved to help avoid these senseless acts of violence.

Yet, after seeing what happened last week, one could ask “Have these changes really helped?”

Maybe President Bush should issue a color-coded warning system for school violence, like he

has for terrorist attacks.

The changes as a result of these attacks are widespread; schools, principles, and teachers

have a new sense of paranoia, rules have become stricter at schools--making many seem like

prisons, and probably the most effective change has occurred in the more proactive approach of

mediating and counseling of students.

The fear of these attacks happening again is normal. No one would want to go through a

similar situation to that of Columbine. That does not mean that we should allow this fear to

affect proper decision making. This is where paranoia comes into effect. Take for example of

the principle of that high school in South Carolina. He was told, by another student, that a

classmate was selling drugs. The principle had previous knowledge of the accused, and knew he

was a “troubled” student. Instead of handling the situation himself, he felt the best thing for the

school was to call the authorities. After relaying the information to the police, including the fact

that the student was “troubled”, the police came to their decision. They did not want to have

what happened in Columbine happen in their high school, city, or state. Their decision to use

excessive force has hurt more students emotionally, then has helped anyone. There were no

drugs, guns, or bombs on the accused student. The whole situation could of been settled by the

principle and not the police. Instead the principles and the polices paranoia took over and has

left many Americans accessing how we should handle these situations.

One way many Americans believe we can handle this is by having stricter rules within

our schools. If someone came back from the grave to see our schools now, they would ask

“What the hell happened?” With all the changes within the schools, they now appear as prisons

and not educational institutions. The changes are numerous and here are some of the biggest of

these changes; many schools do not allow backpacks, they require I.D.’s to be worn at all times,

some public schools have enforced dress codes, and some schools have metal detectors, along

with police, at all entrances of the schools. When asking a former Columbine student about how

she felt after her school started to enforce I.D.’s and no backpacks, she said “I felt as though I

was being punished, eventhough I was a victim and had nothing to do with the attack.” These

rules were not and still are not taken warmly by students. History has shown that stricter rules

cause more rebellion. Which in this case, could it cause more acts of violence by some students?

Hatred and anger is easily built up when individuals are not able to be themselves. Still many

believe that this is the way to ensure future tragedies don’t happen again.

Others believe there is a better solution to be had. These people believe that the best way

to save schools from having these occurrences, is to talk to the students one on one. Some

schools have hired more counselors, and have been teaching students how to peer mediate. In

many cases, the school districts have started talking to their students as early as elementary

school. These individual schools and school districts have realized and accepted that not all of

their students are going to be happy. They understand that students will be made fun of and

sometimes be at the center negative attention by other classmates. These schools do the most

important thing and talk to both individuals, sometimes together or on a more personal basis.

They let those, who are being picked on, know that there is nothing wrong with them, and they

give them appropriate avenues which they can deal with their feelings. As stated the counselors

don’t stop there. They talk to the “bullies” and help them see why they are always having to pick

on others. Mediation and counseling students allows them to know that they have someone to

talk to without feeling uncomfortable, as they might feel with their parents. Students are able to

express their feelings which can prevent anger, hatred, and resentments from building up inside

them. Counselors give students the attention they need and deserve. This helps deter students

from trying to receive the attention they need through negative means such as school shootings

and other acts of violence.

Governments and politics can say they have the answers with stricter rules inside and

outside the schools, but their political banter will not solve the problem. We have to find the root

of the cause and that is not the rules. The root is the students themselves. These acts of violence

are merely a cry for attention. Many schools have come to accept this and are trying to address it

the best they can, but it doesn’t start or stop with the schools. It needs to begin at home with the

parents. Parents must give the needed attention to their children. They must be willing to

become involved in their children’s live. They must care enough to listen, and understand

enough to know that anger will not help. Parents must try to help solve the problems and not

simply punish their children. No longer can parents stick their children on front of televisions,

video game systems, or computers. Children’s emotional voids can not be filled with

materialistic substitutes. Parents must not only become active in children’s lives, but also their

feelings. If this happens, we have our best chance of stopping these senseless cries for attention

by our children.

The events in Oedipus Rex written by Sophocles show an underlying relationship of man’s free will existing within the cosmic order or fate that the Greeks believed guided the universe. Fate, controlled by the gods, can be defined as an inevitable outcome or a cause determining events. Although Oedipus was a victim of fate, he wasn’t completely controlled by it. In order for Sophocles’ play to be categorized as tragic, the tragic hero had to have some sort of flaw. The tragic hero’s flaws are the qualities that ultimately lead to his downfall. Fate and freewill play a large role in the rise and fall of the protagonist. The protagonist in the play has to either cause the fall by his own free will or by fate causing it. Without these two elements, there would be no fall of the protagonist in a tragic play and thus the writer’s aim of giving the audience emotions of pity and fear leading them to experience a feeling of catharsis or purgation wouldn’t be achieved and there would be no suspense or action to build up the climax in which case the character flaws of Oedipus work in tandem with fate to take the tragedy to its climax. But later, we see that Oedipus’ habit of acting swiftly has a dangerous side. When he tells the story of killing the band of travellers who attempted to shove him off the three-way crossroads, Oedipus shows that he has the capacity to behave rashly. This rashness is also revealed in the prologue when he publicly swears to find and punish Laios’ murderer which later assists his tragic fall as he lack the prudence to wait and see who the murderer is. Oedipus’ swiftness continues throughout the play as he interrogates Creon, calls for Teiresias, refers to him as a ‘wicked old man’ (line 1), threatens to banish Creon after calling him a ‘murderer’ (line 505), calls for the servant who escaped the attack on Laios as well as the shepherd who was given the baby from Queen Jocasta, rushes to the palace to stab his eyes out on finding out the truth and finally, demands to be exiled.

Oedipus’ erroneous judgemental errors are another major constituent leading to his downfall. For instance, when Oedipus interrogates Teiresias about the murderer’s identity, Teiresias prefers to keep silent as he doesn’t want to be the cause of Oedipus’ ruin. Oedipus on the other hand, interprets Teiresias’ silence as treachery. He labels him a villain and calls him a ‘wicked old man’ (line 1). He also considers him to be a conspirator along with Creon who he calls a ‘murderer’ (line 505). As a result, he fails to heed Teiresias’ advice and warning against continuing the investigation. The accusations he hurls at Teiresias and Creon are completely unjustified. Also, when Jocasta realizes that Oedipus is her real son and that the prophecy has come true, she desperately tries to stop Oedipus from continuing with his investigations as she pleads ‘listen I beg you do not do this thing’ (line 1008). But the adamant ruler pays no heed thinking that she is concerned whether or not he will be of humble birth. Thus, Sophocles shows the defects of an otherwise ideal ruler. An instance of hamartia or character flaw is presented here.

Oedipus not only makes hasty and wrong judgements about the prophet and his brother in law, Creon, but he is also scornful in dealing with an important authority like Teiresias. The aforementioned instances of how Oedipus treats Creon and Teiresias can also be considered when viewing another one of Oedipus’ tragic flaws which lead to his downfall and play a role in Oedipus’ free will being that Oedipus is a proud figure who doesn’t take advice well and possesses traits of being impetuous and short-tempered. Teiresias is reluctant to reveal the dreadful secret that the murderer whom Oedipus is seeking so desperately is none other than Oedipus himself yet Oedipus’ hounding forces him to speak. Although Teiresias speaks the truth, it is only the audience who knows that he is right while an angry and arrogant Oedipus adamantly refuses to believe what Teiresias says and instead, brands him a traitor. He is also arrogant when denouncing Teiresias’ prophetic capabilities. In addition, after realizing the prophecy had come true, Jocasta begs him to let the mystery go unsolved as she cries ‘Everything that I say is for your own good!’ (line 1010). Oedipus replies ‘My own good. Snaps my patience then; I want none of it’ (line 1011). In is in his own vain that he must solve the final riddle of his own life. It is Oedipus’ impetuous and short-tempered nature that lands him in a fight with Laios at the crossroads. The consequence is that he kills Laios. Oedipus has killed his father and thereby fulfilled the first part of the oracle. Fate has played its trick assisted by the very nature of Oedipus.




Oedipus’ character is controlled by fate yet at the same time his impulsive and short tempered nature contributes to his fate. Oedipus’ disastrous outcome wasn’t totally controlled by his free will. The actions leading to Oedipus’ outcome which occurred before he ran away from Corinth weren’t caused by Oedipus’ free will but by other forces controlled by fate. For one thing, his being brought to Corinth and raised by the Corinthian king and queen was due to the actions of the Theban and Corinthian shepherds. Another point to consider is the fact that Oedipus’ free will didn’t have anything to do with him hearing a drunken fool calling him a bastard which lead to Oedipus heading to the Delphic oracle to question his true identity. It also wasn’t Oedipus’ free will that prevented his adoptive parents from telling him the truth about his identity in which case if Oedipus had known the truth, he wouldn’t have run away to Thebes to try to escape his fate. When Oedipus tears his eyes out, he is accepting the full burden of his acts and knew that he must be punished for his sins. Therefore, the last act of destruction was caused by Oedipus’ free will but his tragic fate came about because of the gods intervening in human affairs. Also, when the chorus asks Oedipus what god urged him to blind himself, we notice how he realizes that although the gods control his fate, his free will also contributed to his tragic outcome as he replies ‘the god was Apollo. He brought my sick fate upon me. But the blinding had was my own’ (line 186-187) in which case he claims responsibility for his actions. Initially, Oedipus is portrayed as a responsible king. As we watch the play, we learn that he had previously saved the kingdom from the torture of the Sphinx and thus his impulse of solving riddles came in handy as it served a good cause. However, this good fortune is only an illusion rather than a reality.

Oedipus’ unyielding desire to uncover the truth about Laios’ murder and the mystery surrounding his own birth is a major character flaw that led him to the tragic realization of his horrific deeds. Again, the previous examples can be taken into account in considering Oedipus’ character flaw in which case Oedipus ignored Teiresias and Jocasta who tried to stop him from pursuing the truth as the previous results may be unpleasant but he stubbornly continues on his unrelenting quest for the truth. Oedipus treats Teiresias respectfully at first because he believed that he had the answers to solve the mystery of Laios’ murder. When Teiresias told Oedipus that he was the murderer, he became enraged and calls him a liar. He is unable to stop his quest for the truth even under his wife’s pleading. Oedipus’ impulse to solve mysteries takes him to Delphi to seek the truth about his parentage. It is also the impulse to solve the riddle of the Sphinx that brings him to Thebes where he ends up marrying the widowed Queen Jocasta. By marrying his mother, the second part of the oracle is fulfilled aided by Oedipus’ nature. The persistence of Oedipus is heightened when he attempts to solve the riddle of his own life and yet is denied the truth by the shepherd who pray to Oedipus not to continue digging into the mystery ‘ For God’s love my King, do not ask me any more!’ (line 1100). Although the Theban shepherd is reluctant to talk, Oedipus grills him with questions to the point of threatening him with death if he doesn’t tell the truth as he harshly replies ‘You are a dead man if I have to ask you again’ (line 1101). Due to his unquenchable thirst for solving riddles, Oedipus has brought ruin upon himself and his household but he is also fearless as he doesn’t back down from his quest although he fears the worst. Oedipus expresses his fears about Teiresias’ prophecies and accusations. He then expresses his suspicion of having murdered King Laios. The Corinthian messenger asks Oedipus to take the kingship of Corinth but Oedipus expresses his reluctance as he fears his fate according to which he will marry his own mother.

Another factor ultimately contributing to Oedipus’ destruction is his insolence towards the gods. He ran away from his home in Corinth in hopes of outsmarting the gods’ divine will as he sought ways to escape the horrible destiny told by Apollo’s oracle. Rather than face his fate, he attempts to run from it thereby defying the gods. This is also evident when he remarks ‘Why should a man give heed to the birds that jangle above his head?’ (line 415-416), in which case he refers to the prophetic signs of the gods sarcastically after finding out his presumed father died a natural death and not by his own hands as prophesised. The consequences of defying the gods is hinted throughout the play as the chorus warns us of man’s need to have reverence for the gods and the dangers of too much pride as they remark ‘The tyrant is a child of pride who drinks from his great sickening cup, wreckless and vanity, until from his high crest headlong he plummets to the dust of hope’. The chorus uses figurative language to deepen the meaning of their words and emphacise the consequences of arrogance and pride provoking the ire of the gods in which case if a man steps beyond what is his destiny, he may be struck down. The chorus has also personified pride as the parent of the tyrant and metaphorically compares recklessness and vanity as liquids the tyrant drinks. In addition, the chorus metaphorically compares the tyrant’s good fortune to the crest of a mountain while his downfall is compared to a fall from the crest of a mountain. The chorus conclude this tragedy with their last words of wiseness by warning the Greeks that the only way to find happiness is through humility and respect towards the gods. Thus Oedipus atones for his sinful existence through self-infliction and self-exile. It is through this vain that he discovers humility and reverence for the gods. Earlier in the play, Oedipus is shown to be an impetuous and arrogant man who defies all who don’t agree with him. By the end of the play, a new Oedipus has emerged who has been humbled and who has been accountable for his sins regardless of whether or not he has inflicted them consciously or not. Oedipus was guilty of killing his father and marrying his mother but perhaps the true sin lay in his over zealous attempt to raise himself to the level of the gods by trying to escape his fate. Although Oedipus had taken the prophecy seriously, he would’ve avoided conflicts or interactions with older people. Instead, he acts in a rash manner. In attempting to escape the fate ordained him by the prophecy, Oedipus brought ruin upon himself and the kingdom of Thebes.

Oedipus’ fate ruined his life and lead him to a horrible death. however, Oedipus took many actions leading to his downfall and carried the seeds of his destruction within himself. Henry IV, Part One details the struggle of King Henry IV to maintain his control of the English throne which he usurped from Richard II. The play begins with news that one of his commanders, Mortimer, has lost a battle to Glyndwr in Wales. However, another commander, Hotspur, has succeeded in defeating Douglas in Scotland, but refuses to send his prisoners back to the king.

Henry is furious about this, since prisoners are a way of earning money through ransom. He orders Hotspur to yield the prisoners under threat of punishment. Hotspur, impulsive as always, tells his father Northumberland that he will never give up the prisoners. Worcester tells Hotspur that it would be smarter to turn over the prisoners but at the same time form an alliance with Douglas and Glyndwr, and thus raise an army with which to overthrow Henry IV.

Hal, the affectionate name for Prince Harry, the son of King Henry, is a prodigal and a madcap (thief). He wastes his time in taverns with the lower classes of English society, and spends a great deal of time with a fat nobleman named Falstaff. In the first act Hal agrees to participate in a robbery in order to experience it. However, at the end of the scene and in soliloquy, Hal indicates to the audience that he is merely in disguise, and that he fully expects to assume the reins of power in the near future.

The thieves, led by Falstaff, carry out their robbery. Hal and Poins, another robber, play a trick on the thieves by robbing the money from Falstaff. The next night in the tavern Falstaff tells a roaringly funny tale about how he fought with many men before being defeated. Hal finally reveals the secret of the attackers to him, at which point Falstaff claims that he knew who it was all along, but that he did not wish to harm the Prince of Wales (Hal).




The rebels, led by Hotspur, unite Douglas from Scotland and Glyndwr in Wales. Together with the Archbishop of York they start to raise an army, gathering their forces at Shrewsbury. Hotspur does not get along well with Glyndwr, whom he views as being too mystical. The men also start to argue about how they will split up the territories, since Hotspur wants England, Douglas Scotland, and Glyndwr Wales.

King Henry calls Hal into his throne room and begs his son to mend his ways. Hal agrees to be more myself in the future. Henry then informs his son that the rebels are mobilizing near Shrewsbury, and Hal receives a military command. He immediately starts to prepare for war with Hotspur. Henry assembles his own armies and starts moving towards Shrewsbury. Almost as a joke, Falstaff receives an infantry command from Hal, which is difficult for him since he is too fat to be able to walk very far.

At Shrewsbury, King Henry offers to fully pardon the rebels if they decamp and return to their homes. Hotspurs agent, Worcester, fails to deliver this message to Hotspur because he is convinced that Henry will not honor the pardon. Thus Hotspur feels trapped into fighting. To make matters worse, Glyndwr is unable to arrive on time, causing the rebels to have far fewer men than they had expected. At the same time, Northumberland falls ill and is unable to help rally his troops. Hotspur, unable to wait any longer, decides to go ahead with the battle preparations anyway.

Henry puts nobles on the field dressed as himself as a form of protection. Douglas kills several of the impersonators before encountering Henry. The two men start to fight, but Hal arrives in time to save his father and chase Douglas away. Henry comments that he is sorry he ever doubted his sons abilities.

Hal next encounters Hotspur. After a brief exchange of words they start to fight with on another. While the two young men are fighting, Falstaff arrives and encourages Hal to victory. Douglas also arrives and attacks Falstaff, who soon falls down as if he were dead. Hal succeeds in killing Hotspur, but is sad that Falstaff has also been killed.

No sooner does Hal depart then Falstaff gets back to his feet and stabs Hotspurs body. He then picks up Hotspur and takes the credit for killing him. Hal cannot believe Falstaffs lies, but decides it is not worth arguing about.

King Henry succeeds in winning the battle once the leaders are killed or captured. He sentences Worcester and Vernon to death for their failure to offer his pardon to Hotspur. Hal chooses to pardon Douglas and set him free, realizing that this is strategically necessary if he wants to rule Scotland in the future. Henry then splits his army into two parts, one of which will march on York, the other of which will attack Glyndwr.

DVgate Ver..6 Overview

DVgate Ver..6 allows you to capture movie and still images

from the DV device connected to the i.LINK (IEEE14) jack of

the PC, and also allows you to save the captured movie and

still images to a file.

You can also edit the captured movie file(s) and still

image file(s) and record the captured movie file(s) to the

connected DV device.

DVgate Ver..6 consists of the following software.

DVgate Motion

Captures movie and converts and saves the captured movie to

an AVI file (DV CODEC).

Can also record the DV CODEC AVI file to the DV device.

DVgate Still

Captures an image from the DV device and converts and saves

the captured image to an all-purpose graphics data.

DVgate Assemble

Edits the DV CODEC AVI file created by DVgate Motion and

the still image captured by DVgate Still.

Can convert and save the edited movie/image to DV CODEC

AVI and MPEG1/ MPEG files (1).

(1) Some models cannot convert to MPEG file.

NTSC/PAL Switcher

This is a utility to switch the settings of a PC in order to

match the video format (NTSC or PAL) of the connected device.

Precautions (Common)

[DV devices that can be controlled by DVgate]

This program can control only household DV devices

manufactured by Sony (limited to models sold in the country

where the computer was purchased).

DVgate has been confirmed to work with household DV

devices equipped with an i.LINK connector (including

media converters and Digital 8) sold before the end of

December 00.

[In case you use Sony Digital Video Camera Recorder

DCR-VX1000/DHR-1000/DCR-VX700]

If Windows XP is installed on your computer, DVgate cannot be

used in combination with DCR-VX1000, DHR-1000 of PAL video

format and DCR-VX700 (terminal connected later on during after

sales service).

[In case you use Sony Digital Video Cassette Recorder]

If Windows XP is installed on your computer and you connect

the digital video cassette recorder for the first time,

[Add new hardware Wizard] dialog appears and [AV/C Tuner] is

detected. In this case, please select [Automatic search for a

better driver (Recommend)] and then click [Next].

[Windows was unable to locate the software for this device]

appears, however, there is no problem in using the DVgate

program.

A user with administrator privileges needs to carry out

this work.

[Recommended settings and limitations of DVgate application]

Each DVgate application needs hardware resource like CPU and

hard disk.

Please make sure you read the recommended settings and

limitations included in the online Help or the instruction

manual.

[Display Resolution/Color]

This software is intended to work with more than High Color

(16bit) Windows display.

Colors may not be displayed properly with less than 56 Color

Windows display.

[Resolution Change]

When you change the display resolution, please exit the

application and launch it again.

When you set the Windows Display properties to high

resolution, high refresh rate and high color, the movie or

sound may not play smoothly.

[Monitor Display]

You can change the DV CODEC image resolution on the monitor

window of this software (DVgate Motion, DVgate Still and

DVgate Assemble). However, if you increase the resolution,

the movie or sound may not play smoothly or the overall

operation of the application may become slow. In that case,

please reduce the resolution.

[The problem related with DVgate audio]

When playing the movie of the tape or the file using the

DVgate applications, the sound may stop for a second.

However, there is no problem with the sound of the movie that

is recorded or output using DVgate Motion and the sound of

the file that is output using DVgate Assemble.

[Compensation for contents]

If by any chance, capture and record fail because of a DV device

or software problem, please be advised that we cannot compensate

for the contents.

[Copyright]

Unauthorized use of the captured or recorded movie(s) except

for individual fun is prohibited.

[Connecting the DV device]

If Windows XP is installed on your computer and you switch user

when DVgate Motion is controlling the DV device,

DVgate Motion/Still may not connect or may take a long time to

connect to the DV device. In this case, please re-start

DVgate Motion/Still after the device stops.

[When the DV device is connected to the computer]

If Windows XP is installed on your computer, every time you

connect the DV device to your computer, the [Digital Video

Device] dialog appears. Please close the dialog by clicking

[Cancel] if DVgate Motion (or Still) is running.

If you do not want the dialog to be displayed in future, please

select the [Take no action] icon on the [Digital Video Device]

dialog, check the [Always perform the selected action] check box

and then click [OK].

[Files exceeding 100 minutes]

The length of movie files exceeding 100 minutes may not be

displayed correctly with DVgate Motion/Assemble. However, there

will be no problem in exporting them to files or DV devices.

Precautions (DVgate Motion)

[In case you use Sony Digital8]

Please switch to [IMPORT-Manual (manual capture)] mode if you

want to capture the movie recorded in analog format (High8/ 8mm).

[In case the tape has unrecorded area]

If the tape has unrecorded area in between the IN and OUT points,

you will not be able to capture properly.

Please make sure to set the IN and OUT points without including

unrecorded area between them.

[Capture from a discontinuous time code area]

Please switch to [IMPORT-Manual (manual capture)] mode if you

want to capture from a discontinuous time code area.

[Splice recording from the end of a recorded area]

In the [EXPORT-Auto] mode, if you start recording the movie

from the end of a recorded area on the DV tape, DVgate may not

detect the correct position and may not perform splice recording.

Please insert 0 or more frames of blank image at the end of

the original image when performing splice recording.

[Cancel while controlling the DV device]

If Windows 000 Professional or Windows XP (Home Edition/

Professional) is installed on your computer and DVgate Motion

is controlling the DV device, it may take a long time to exit that

operation even if the operation is canceled.

If Windows XP is installed on your computer and another

user logs on when the DV device is being controlled, DVgate Motion

will cancel controlling the DV device. Then, if the original user

logs on, DVgate Motion may not be displayed properly. It will

however return to normal display after the cancel operation

is completed.

[In case you use the DV device with the PC-Signal convert

function]

Please do not use the PC-Signal convert function while recording

movie to the DV device. Regarding the PC-Signal convert function,

please refer to the instruction manual of your DV device.

[The problems related to the DV devices that have only the DV

OUT jack]

For a DV device that has only the DV OUT jack, DVgate Motion

may not be able to scan, mark, or batch capture.

In that case, display the image of the tape on the monitor

window by either playback, pause, etc. and then try again.

Sojourner Truth was born a slave named Isabella Baumfree sometime in 177 in Ulster county, New York. The exact date of her birth is to this day unknown, but it is believed to have been sometime during the fall. She developed her characteristics of courage and dependability from her mother, Mau Mau Bett, at an early age. Isabella was first owned by a Dutch named Charles, who was happened to be a decent slave owner. At his death, she was separated from her mother and auctioned to another set of plantation owners, the Neelys. Seeing this, he forced her to marry a fellow slave known as Tom. Isabella gave birth to five children within the next five years. Two years before the emancipation act of 188, in which all slaves within New York were freed, Dumont promised Isabella that if she were to work extra hard the next year, he would set her free a year early. She did just that; she was the even harder working already hardest working slave on the plantation.

In her speeches, she spoke of the living conditions many slaves were forced to endure, crowded together into cabins with no privacy, overworked, fed scraps in many cases, and clothed raggedy scraps. Her audiences must have felt the shame as Truth recalled the auction block, upon which men and women alike were frequently forced to strip and stand before potential buyers, who would search their bodies for marks of the whip or of wrist or leg irons, the presence of which would indicate the slave had been frequently punished. The slaves would be forced to endure impersonal and degrading inspections of their teeth, muscles, and other body parts, depending on what the buyer was looking for in the purchase. When the time came, though, Dumont broke his promise. Isabella, realizing she had been tricked, escaped with her infant child in her arms in October of 187 to the refuge of a Quaker family.

She became an outspoken advocate of womens rights as well as blacks rights. In 184, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth. Everywhere she spoke she made a lasting impression. She was physically strong and over six feet tall and she had a powerful, booming voice.




As a speaker, Sojourner Truth became known for her quick wit and powerful presence. She would never be intimidated. Because of her powerful speaking ability, independent spirit and her six foot frame, she was often accused of being a man. For our story, the Praise of Folly is most fascinating for its trenchant and central satire on war and warmakers, past and present. Within the whole work this forms a structure of relentlessly ironic social criticism, both destructive and constructive. Erasmus was addressing himself to an audience which, if schooled in the quite usual medieval patterns of thought, customarily regarded war (like the plague) as caused by man¡¦s sin and God¡¦s answering justice, yet at the same time (since St. Augustine) as an action approvable as just and Christian. The accretions of chivalrous romance, moreover, had dressed war in a heroic glamour suitable for one of nobility¡¦s most glorious occupations. In startling contrast, Erasmus presented a Christian-humanist image of war and warmakers as beastly, hellish, corruptive of human society, unjust, and unchristian. War is not treated as an incurable form of human folly; it is not in the nature of things inevitable and necessary; it is corrupted men who make it so. The satire was designed progressively to amuse, surprise, shock, appall, and, finally, prompt pensive men to re-examine time-hallowed medieval values and authorities then¢was necessary¢wto modify and reform them through the right use of reason and the Scriptures.

The Silenus box is a case carved like an ugly Silenus that can be opened to reveal beautiful, precious objects (Erasmus 4, footnote). This box appears in Erasmus The Praise of Folly as a metaphor for the central claim in the novel, which is that that which appears to be Folly (ugly) externally, is wise (precious) within. Erasmus reveals this dichotomy on three levels in the image of the box itself, in his genuine praise of Folly, and in the structure of the novel as a whole.

Erasmus, using the female voice of Folly, introduces his reader to the image of the Silenus box early in the text, thereby allowing his reader to carry the image with her for the rest of her time reading (and see its metaphoric nature when appropriate). Folly makes the introduction, saying, All human affairs... have two aspects quite different from each other. She then goes on to explain that this means, according to Plato, that things that appear at first blush... to be death, will, if you examine [them] more closely, turn out to be life... in brief, you will find everything suddenly reversed if you open the Silenus (4). In more direct terms, something which on its surface seems one way (the bad way), has opposite (good) guts. In The Praise of Folly, the pair of opposites that Erasmus focuses on is that of folly and wisdom.

By including a passage dedicated to the description of the Silenus, Erasmus gives his readers a concrete picture to grasp onto that stands for the novels link between this pair of opposites, which is that wisdom comes under the wrapping of folly. The passage allows the reader to understand this central concept more easily. The concept, in its many manifestations, can be brought back to the same single image the box. Silenus box serves as an illustration (a picture book, if you will) for the complicated Praise of Folly, thereby making the readers task of distinguishing between different narrators, and different textual layers, easier.




Folly, being folly, goes on from her initial description of the box to give the majority of her list backwards (although she begins correctly), claiming that if the list goes in one direction, it must, of course, go in the opposite direction as well (shes a woman -- you cant expect her to be reasonable (8)). To do this, she abruptly inserts the word conversely (4), and continues with a long backward list. Life will turn out to be death; beauty will become ugliness, and so on, she says (4). In this backwards list, good outsides cloak bad insides. She then uses this inverted list as a springboard to celebrate wise appearances (although this is the exact opposite of the central message of the book, which is the celebration of foolish appearances).

She declares that esteemed members of the community are truly members of her (Follys) clan, and that all they have of wisdom is its appearance. Kings and great courtiers... find suitable pretexts within which they can steal from their citizens and live in luxury so that downright injustice at least has some appearance of justice (107-8). Popes, cardinals and bishops also behave artificially. They play their roles with theatrical pomp and ceremonies, but as much as they abide by the superficial demands of their positions, inside they are not genuinely pious. These are just a few examples of generally respected authorities regularly acting on the outside as if they are morally impeccable, while inside, they are morally rotten.

Folly celebrates their false wisdom, saying, To destroy the illusions by exposing them would ruin the whole play of life (4). Folly defends their false grandeur by claiming that people could not be happy otherwise, for lifes play would be ruined. Although this application of the metaphor is an inverted version of the Silenus box, it is interesting as a criticism of esteemed authorities. The reason the Silenus box metaphor is used in a backwards (foolish) way in this section may be Erasmus way of distancing himself from his books criticisms of these powerful people. By having Folly deem them as being wise only externally, Erasmus removes himself from being politically incorrect. If anyone was insulted, he could just point to the text and laugh at them for being insulted by Follys understanding of them.

Finally, at the end of the novel, Erasmus seemingly true voice is temporarily inserted in place of Follys. He applies the Silenus box metaphor properly, and makes a singular genuine praise of Folly (who before had only herself to praise her). He brings his reader back to the original (non-inverted) metaphor, saying that what is ugly (foolish) without is beautiful (wise) within. To do this, he states, Only fools have a license to declare truth without offense (1). To substantiate his extreme claim, he quotes Paul take me for a fool... we are all fools for the sake of Christ, says the wise apostle (17). Likewise, Erasmus appeals to Jeremiahs attribution of wisdom... to God alone, leaving folly as the lot of all men (11). Paul and Jeremiah say that those who think themselves wise are actually fools for allotting themselves an attribute that only God has. Erasmus clearly has a similar message in mind in his statement that only fools have a license to declare truth without offense because he chooses to quote Jeremiah and Paul to substantiate his statement.

Erasmus is praising those who call themselves fools, for they are the ones who exhibit humble modesty under God, thereby declaring truth without offense. Again, the parallel to the Silenus box is easily drawn. The self-professed (self-carved) fool is the ugly exterior, and the wisdom within is the beautiful, precious object (4). This specific point echoes the solidly humanist phrase which Erasmus himself reputedly said Men are not born, but fashioned. Wise men must fashion themselves the faces of fools.

Erasmus true compliment to Folly, that she is the shroud for wisdom, is also a compliment to the novel itself. For the novel, Erasmus covers his naturally reasonable and male (8) writing voice with a humorous and base (11) fictional voice. This character voice is itself Folly -- a woman (silly creatures, but nevertheless amusing and pleasant(8)). Yet, despite the fact that Erasmus gives himself the voice of this Platonic fool, The Praise of Folly holds in its pages much wisdom, including the very wisdom that is designed at convincing the reader of its own high status (that that which is foolish without, is wise within). Erasmus is demonstrating his true wisdom by artificially giving himself the tongue of the fool. In other words, he is exhibiting his wisdom by dressing as a woman to cover his reasonable manliness. In this same literary tradition, Rabelais utilizes this peculiar narrative technique in Gargantua and Pantagruel, where he too hides the wisdom in his work behind the veil of foolish, and even vulgar, language.

Erasmus inclusion of the passage explaining the Selenus box allows it to be a metaphor for the central concept in the novel. Through its presence, Erasmus gives us, his readers, a tool with which to separate the layers of his text. Without it, we might be stranded (after reading) with the inaccurate belief that Erasmus was a babbling hypocrite, with contradictory ideas sprinkled throughout his work. But, I suppose, we could have just attributed that fault to Folly, who is always more than willing to accept such a title

What is American culture? What is its significance? These two questions are extremely difficult to answer, let alone extremely difficult concepts to grasp. In fact, almost every human on this planet will derive different meanings of American culture and it will unquestionably hold different levels of significance to different people. American culture is an oxymoronic phrase because there is no such thing. It is made up of various subcultures from every country and ethnicity in the world. Ishmael Reed even asks, “What’s American about America” (Verberg ). American culture is the fusion of different subcultures which brings about an environment conducive to learning and tolerance. Not only that, but it also provides the basic moral code and guidelines that our society functions by.

Joyce Millet, an author and cultural historian would categorize the “melting pot” theory as antiquated. “America has traditionally been referred to as a ‘melting pot’, welcoming people from many different countries, races, and religions, all hoping to find freedom, new opportunities, and a better way of life. Today, the trend is toward multiculturalism, not assimilation. The old “melting pot” metaphor is giving way to new metaphors such as ‘salad bowl’ and ‘mosaic’, mixtures of various ingredients that keep their individual characteristics. Immigrant populations within the United States are not being blended together in one ‘pot’, but rather they are transforming American society into a truly multicultural mosaic” (Millet http//www.culturalsavvy.com/understanding_american_culture_.htm). Millet goes on to talk about how American culture can only be understood by running through each particular US region in order to understand what that region and the people who live there, contributes to overall cultural understanding. While I agree with some of this concept, I feel that American culture should not be looked at in regards to what each subculture has to offer and in addition, what each region has to offer, but instead as the sum of all these subcultures which invariably give American culture its significance.

One example of the significance of American culture would be the fact that it leads to a productive healthy environment in the realm of education and socialization. Through education (which is a societal standard that Americans have set for all their children) we learn to accept others who may not share the same skin color or facial structure as we do, we learn to be tolerant of different ideas and religions, and we are taught to accept people no matter how different they are. This value for all humans was taught to me in a Californian Elementary school when my third grade teacher read us a book about the people of the world. The book contained those of Asian, African, Indian (sub-continent and American), and Latin descent. After showing us pictures of the various people, the teacher proceeded to tell us that despite the fact that everyone in that book looked different and had different skin colors; it didn’t make them better or worse. They were still people just like us and we were supposed to treat them the way we would like to be treated ourselves. This idea of acceptance continued throughout my school life and carried with me to different continents and countries. For me, this exposure to different ideas brought about a certain amount of perspective and tolerance in my life. As a result of having so many different people, races, religions, and ideas prevalent in our society, our culture teaches us how to integrate, socialize, and accept all these differences in a civil manner.




American culture is also vastly significant due to the fact that it provided a basis for which most, if not all of American society lives their lives by. It provides our society with guidelines for what is acceptable and what will not be tolerated. It provides us with an unwritten morality code which is subject to change. An example would be our justice system. In our culture and society, we are taught that killing is wrong. If one commits a murder they will be removed from society and either sentenced to life imprisonment or sentenced to death. This theory of establishing right from wrong is a direct result of our culture. In other countries like Pakistan for example, in tribal areas, warlords take matters into their own hands and will kill in revenge without resorting to the justice system that is set in place by their respective villages. That is a direct result of their culture dictating their societal rules.

Culture, in conclusion, is learned, not inherited, and is therefore amenable to change. Melville wrote, “We are not a nation, so much as a world” (Verburg ). This statement rings true for America is a world a world of different ideas and of different people. We are the epitomic cross-section of the world and because of that, American culture will remain at the forefront of the world due to its overall acceptance of multiple ideas. Through education we teach what is right and wrong and we allow our children to go forth be accepting or at least open-minded to anything that one does not know and does not fully understand. American culture will never be fully understood nor will it ever be fully listed as being the product of one subculture and another. However, its significance has lived past our ancestors and will continue to live on through our children and our children’s children.

Weight Discrimination

The ideal of weight as a disability is debatable in Corporate America. The American Disability Act (ADA) defines a disability as meaning, with respect to an individual, a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual, or . . . being regarded as having such an impairment.

The impairment terms are when a person is not physically able to do the job because of their weight. Recently in the news, a Russian dancer was released from a dance company because she was too heavy for the other dancers to lift her. The Russian dancer is far from being obese and no where near being overweight by physical appearance but because she was release for not being able to do her job is an issue that may/may not qualify for a suit of weight discrimination. The ADA regard to this issue is if the boss regards the overweight employee as being physically impaired. I will be following this case to see the outcome.




American obesity is on the rise by 0%. American Obesity Association states on its web site that 55% of American adults are categorized as obese or overweight. Obesity is known to be unhealthy and it can substantially increase risk for many disabling conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall bladder disease, and some forms of cancer. That said, Weight Discrimination in the work place has become just as popular as any other form of hidden discrimination in the work force.

This paper looks as how weight discrimination in both the civilian sector and the U.S. militaries. Far to often the civilian sector looks upon the military standards for a company’s purposed guidelines in many aspects of their business operation. However, the means to accomplish and/or maintain this standard is either not effective or is not existent. The direct opposite is present in the military, the have the means to accomplish and maintain this standard because military members are forced to maintain certain weight standards due of implication of a unit not being mission ready when called upon to carry out an orders effect our nations interest.

The Army uses what is comically called a “fat boy” regulation, Army

Regulation (AR600-). This regulation governs the prescribed weight standards by age and gender. When soldiers are overweight they are looked upon to be incapable of accomplishing the mission. Supervisors are harder on the soldier, they may be passed over for special assignment, promotion to the next highest pay grade. Many times, this form of discreet verbal abuse is enough to push some over the edge. This example, clearly shows overweight people within the military are subject to both subtle and blatant forms of discrimination. However, it not called discrimination, it masked as a motivator - to help motivate soldiers to get within standard and to maintain those standards.

In reviewing the civilian sector, I see some of the same similarities. The appearance in corporate America is considered to be a selling factor for most companies. If you are overweight it is almost certain you will not be standing in front of a group of people selling the company’s product or image. The standard Professional looking image is sleek and thin.

Most companies tend not to show a genuine concern about an employee’s health until it causes the company money, such as an increase in health insurance.

Bottom line - When corporations being to lose money, weight became a hot issue. in the past year U.S.

companies have lost $1 billion dollars due to higher use of health care to treat obesity-related diseases. Now corporations are concern, because they now have lower productivity and more absenteeism, according to the Washington Business Group on Health, an organization representing large employers. Obesity outranks both smoking and drinking in terms of increased health costs.

Even though obesity is a significant problem, discrimination occurs and

should not be tolerated because we have rights as a people.

Discrimination is defined as unequal treatment of employees based on non-job-related factors, such as race, sex, age, national origin, religion, color, and physical or mental handicap. Discrimination in any form is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

Companies do not have the right to discriminate because of weight. Regretfully, there is no law in place to protect overweight people. In short, size does matter!

In making the military behavior more acceptable, there are programs put in place to assist the military member in meeting weight standards. Does that mean that the military has a genuine concern for each soldier’s health, more than civilian sector? No it is because, the military has to be able to performance during extreme and very trying time during various mission related to national defense.

There does not appear to be any legal recourse for weight discrimination because it is hard to prove in the legal arena.

The major civil rights statutes focus on traits that cannot be changed, such as race, gender, or age. Since a persons weight is usually not an unalterable trait, it is difficult, if not impossible to find a provision in a law that provides protection for overweight people. The one possible exception to this conclusion is the Americans with Disabilities Act. By the terms of this law, it was passed because discrimination against individuals with disabilities persists in areas like employment. Individuals with disabilities are normally discrete and insular minorities who have been faced with a history of unequal treatment.

The ADA prohibits most employers from discriminating against qualified individuals with a disability, because of the disability of such individual, in regard to job application procedures, the hiring, advancement, or discharge of employees, employee compensation, job training and . . . other privileges of employment.

Classes of people which suffer discrimination often have to put in twice the effort others do to succeed in the workplace. If you belong to one or more minority groups you have to try three times as hard.

I have review several cases on weight discrimination in both organizations and found them both to have more or less have the same substance. “Your appearance is unbecoming,” or “You are not qualified because of your appearance.” Those words are heard all to often when you are on the receiving end of being overweight. These quotes are the same for military related soldiers. Only to add, “You are not mission ready.” All these words are hurtful and can cause a low morale in the organization or low self esteem.

A 18 survey by the Sacramento-based National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance showed that many fat people sense discrimination but cant prove it. 6 percent of fat women and 4 percent of fat men reported not being hired for a job because of their weight.

Several cases have been filed but few have actually won.

About 54 percent of military people are overweight, and 6. percent are obese, according to a study done by Dr. Richard Atkinson, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin.

In the civilian world, the majority of overweight people are women, while in the military, the reverse holds true. Atkinson said a study that shows 58.6 percent of the men and 6.1 percent of the women in the military are overweight. When military members do not maintain weight standard, they may be face with one of the following examples

- About 600 people are separated from the Air Force every year for weight reasons.

- In the Navy, overweight sailors are barred from advancement, and when their four-year contract expires, many are not allowed to re-enlisted, because they could not meet and/or maintain Navy standards.

Each year, between ,000 and 4,500 people are discharged from all branches of the military for being overweight.

As of today, there are only four places in the nation that have laws that directly prohibit discrimination by weight. They are San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Washington, D.C., and Michigan. Federal law, many states and local statutes protect the disabled, which has inspired some advocates to litigate fat-discrimination disputes on the basis of disability rights laws.

The hallmark federal law is the Americans with Disabilities Act. It defines disability as a condition that substantially limits a major life activity. It does not specifically include fat people, but it does protect people with some of the medical conditions caused by obesity.

a. Strengths � One of Neiman Marcus’ biggest strengths is its brand recognition. Everybody knows what he or she is getting when they walk into Neimans. 4. Analysis of Alternatives �

a. The ability to advertise to a wider consumer will attract more shoppers. If they know they have the specialty product that they want, then they will come into shop. This will lead to an increase in the Neiman Marcus advertising budget. The income that they will receive by attracting a more diverse group should out weigh that cost.

b. Carrying a wider variety of goods would be a double-edged sword for Neiman’s. The first benefit would that they would be able appeal to a wider consumer base. They would attract customers that normally wouldn’t fit under the Neiman umbrella of upscale shopping. This could lead to consumers that eventually would be an upscale customer, such as young people who will have money later in life. The cost would be putting the Neiman name at risk. People expect high quality, high priced goods. If they realize that the Neiman name is on inferior or lower class products, they may stop purchasing them.

5. Recommendation � I believe that carrying a wider variety of products would be the best course of action for Neiman Marcus. They must do it carefully and tactfully. If their name recognition is at all in danger, they must stop. They must uphold the Neiman Marcus name and quality. The benefit of attracting a younger and more occasional customer will outweigh the costs and risks of their brand recognition.

natural environment drawn realistically

will give you a sound basis to exaggerate

your cartoony folk.

7. Develop your own look. We all have our

favorite cartoonists whos drawing style we

admire and while were learning, its fine to

emulate them. But after a period of time, you

dont want to continue to copy them exactly.

Your look will always show its influences and

thats OK.

6. Be an information sponge. Observe people

and how they behave. How do they dress?

Whats going on in the news? What are the

current catch phrases? Popular culture?

5. Experiment with different art tools. What

works best for one artist will be different than

what works for another. Try any sort of pen,

pencil, marker, brush, paint or paper you can

get your hands on. The computer can also be

used to draw and color.

4. Network with people who share your

interest. This will keep up your enthusiasm

for drawing and drive you to become better.

Youll be able to compare different techniques

and bounce ideas off of each other.

. Develop your sense of humor. What makes

people laugh? Learn how to set up a joke.

Can you come up with gags? This is vitally

important especially if you want to be a comic

strip artist.

. Work on your writing skills. Again, if you

want to get into the comic strip business,

the most important element is the humor

sell before a poorly written/well drawn

Site Origin Like most fans of the super heroes, I was first attracted to the comics by the depictions of the characters in heroic stances and action poses. Bringing to life a world of incredible super beings. I can think back to all the comic book covers at the newsstands that had me eagerly flipping through the pages to follow the latest epic of my favorite heroes.

These powerful heroes were capable of anything. From deflecting bullets, surviving explosions, to dodging laser blasts; while they battle tirelessly against a horde of villains and their evil henchmen. At the same time, maintaining their high moral standards, ethics and compassion for their fellow man (even they happen to be super villains.) The focus of these books are on the super heroes. Their musculature, stamina, strength, agility, flexibility and resilience in the face of adversity. In other words, how you might picture a super hero who is capable of going out there trying to save the world everyday.

All the poses in these books were inspired by my favorite artists whose works span over thirty years of my life through my love of drawing, reading and collecting. As a dedication to all the fans of the super hero comic genre; to everyone who has ever been inspired by the multitude of amazing illustrators to create or recreate powerful drawings of the super human figures in action. So, from one die hard comic fan to another . . . ENJOY!

If we Assume that cartooning is a graphic attempt to tell a story (Prince Valiant); Make a joke (The Far Side); Or comment on our society-culture (Pat Oliphant); then cartooning is probably as old as mankind. Picture a gathering of the local hunting club in a cave with a smooth wall. There are Charred sticks from the remains of a fire to provide drawing tools. Seems inevitable doesnt it?

This is probably also how art criticism began, not to mention early attempts to censor cartoons. In some times and places cartooning has been a very dangerous occupation.

Mans first attempts to record events, thoughts, or dreams had to be in the form of pictures. We dont know the meaning of the cave painting at the right, except that it involves a group, action, and weapons. This art isnt a language, nor can it really tell a story. At best its an mnemonic, a memory aid, to help in remembering and retelling stories. Nearly every culture has left some record in this form. It could convey the rough sense of a few nouns and fewer verbs, all open to a wide range of interpretation. Adjectives and abstract concepts were beyond its scope. It could be classed as impressionistic art or as cartooning. Naturally I prefer the latter.



The next step in the development of written languages was a formal system of pictures and symbols that represented specific words or concepts, the pictograph. This evolved into the phonographic system where pictographs represented words, syllables and sounds, making it possible to write out words that had no specific pictograph of their own. Some written languages, such as Chinese and Egyptian never went much beyond this stage.

In most cases phonographic pictographs evolved into abstract forms that were easier to write. The Sumarians developed a system called cuniforms from pictographs. It involved writing on clay tablets with a wedge shaped stylus. Three of the stages in the evolution are shown above.

The Egyptians did it differently. They developed two forms of writing. Priests continued to use hieroglyphics (above left) for official and religous uses. Scribes developed a script or abstract form of the same hieroglyphics that were easier to write (The Hieratic script above right was the first of these). Despite the fact that they were just different symbols for the same meaning it became rare for for anyone to be able to read both. It wasnt as if you only had to memorize two alphabets The Egyptian phonographic system with symbols for words, syllables, and sounds had over 700 symbols to memorize.

At this point writing and cartooning cease to have much in common visually, but some things did carry over from hieroglyphics to our alphabet. The M or m is derived from the wavy line for water. Our O is the same symbol the as the hieratic symbol for eye (Shades of Little Oprhan Annie). In the examples below we have the symbol for Wall, that became our B. The symbol for bull was turned by stages until it became the modern A as ot passed from Egypt to Greece to Rome.

All civilizations must have had a sense of humor of some sort, its a part of human nature, but only a few have left us a record of it. Here well concentrate the most obvious, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

Whatever taboos the Egyptians had, they didnt seem to have much to do with the usual ones of rank and religion.

F.W. Fairholdt, artist and antiquarian, copied hieroglyphics holding some element of humor for the Book A History of Caricature & Grotesque, 1865. Above on the left is one scene of a series showing a royal wine party where the guests need the aid of servants to stand or even sit up. In the case shown the maid isnt quite quick enough to catch the contents of her mistresses heaving. At the right is a scene from a sequence where young nobles leave on a hunting trip with porters to carry the game home. Theres little hunting done and lots of drinking, and the porters carry back not game but some very hung over young nobles.

The Egyptians seemed fond of humor that destroyed dignity or broke up solemn ocasions. Above is part of a sequence showing a funeral procession crossing the lake of the dead. The large boat hits a bar, backs off, ramming a smaller boat carrying provisions for the journey and the provisions are spilled. At the right we have dog faced apes ferrying a soul found wanting back to earth in the form of a pig.

The dog headed ape was sacred to the Egyptian god Thoth, who was sometimes seen with the head of an Ibis and sometimes the head of the dog headed ape (baboon). The apes are of special interest because they were later used by both Greeks and the Romans for parody. They also contributed to the myths of a monstrous race called Cynocephali, and the werewolf.

Some claim that Aesop borrowed many of his fables from the Egyptians, and that is supported by figures such as these. On the right is a cat herding a group of geese, and on the left is a fox carrying a basket in an Egyptian manner, and playing the double flute.



The Greeks used more satire and parody images than the Egyptians, but not nearly as much has survived. They didnt carve them into their monuments, or bury them in elaborate tombs, and the weather wasnt as effective at preserving things. Their paintings were encaustic (wax) and were too fragile to last long. We only know of many works because they have been described in Greek manuscripts. The name of one comic artist has come down to us who was evidently quite famous, Ctesicles. Most of the examples that have survived are from ceramics such as the jar at the right. It dates from about 540 B.C. and shows Hercules bringing the boar to Eurystheus, who is hiding in a storage jar.

At the left is a drawing by Fairholt of a design found on another Greek vase. Despite speculation all we really know is that we have a lover visiting the object of his affections, who doesnt appear to be thrilled. He wears the standard Greek costume and mask of comedy. He is presenting his love with presents of what are probably apples or coins. That it is a night visit is indicated by the torch carried by his servant, who also wears a comic mask. Both males wear wreaths and the servant carries a third wreath and a basket, evidently more gifts for the lady.

The drawing at the right was taken from a vinegar vessel that was used at meals. It is a rather mild example of how freely the Greeks ridiculed their gods, though they had laws protecting mere mortals from such treatment. It pictures the arrival of Apollo at Delphi, using comic masks to insure everyone knows it is parody, and imitates the Greek theater. The figures on the stairs are, left to right, Apollo, Chiron, and an un-named figure. In the clouds are the nymphs of Parnassus.

The Romans fared only slightly better at preserving their comic art, and much of that was due to an unlikely cause, the 7 A.D. eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy that buried and preserved the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. At the left we have two drawing of a same event, The flight of Aeneas, hero of the Aeneid, from Troy. He is leading his son and and carrying his father and household gods. The first drawing is in a traditional style, and there exist several variations and copies of it. The second drawing is a parody version found in a wall painting in Pompeii. It makes use of the dog headed apes borrowed from the Egyptians.

Like the Greeks, much of the Roman comic art was based on their theater and festivals. They increased the use and variety of masks, until they became popular outside the theater, and inspired many of the Gargoyles of the Medieval period. At the right we have a drawing of the stock comic character, the Buffoon or Sannio. They performed comic dances and made grimaces at festivals and feasts as well as in the theater. They are standard in the plays of Terrence. The trademarks included the so called low shoes shown, and two brass rods to strike together. A variation was the Manducus where the primary difference was that the mask featured a tongue lolling out. They are one of the ancestors of the mime, and out of the title Sannio came zanni, or zany. In later periods they became the stooge, or target of the comics jokes and pranks, evolving into pulcinella and finally the English Punch.



At the left is another comic performer often used in comic art, the Roman Mimus. They performed scenes from everyday life, usually of a scandalous and indecent nature. They were extremely popular and often performed even in funeral processions. They often, but not always performed nude, and wore a mask with a large nose. In the performers right hand is a purse or bag with loose objects that will rattle and make noise when shaken. In his left hand is a crotalum, an early form of castanets or cymbals.

Comic art featuring dwarfs were also very popular with the Romans. This grew out of two roots. One was the natural occurance of birth defects, much more common then than now. The second had to do with an old myth that goes as far back as the Egyptians, and probably farther. Both Homer and Pliny mention it. Somewhere in the east lived a race of pygmies that were in constant warfare with cranes. The animosity grew out of the pygmies habit of leaving the mountains each spring, where they normally resided, and mounted on goats and sheep invading the shorelines where the cranes nested. They stole the eggs of the cranes endangering the species. They were pictured as being armed with bow and arrows as well as spears.

The two sources were combined and the Romans became enamored with the dwarfs. They sought and purchased them from abroad and used them more as household pets than as slaves. They are often pictured in parodies of common activities and are usually nude. It has been suggested that this is where the modern use of small figures with large heads originated. Above they are pictured in the normal activities of farmers. The original painting was found in the temple of Venus at Pompeii.

Above is a drawing taken from a Roman drinking cup that shows the pygmies at war with the cranes.

The last figure is by Fairholdt, and is a rare scene showing a Roman artists studio. At the left is a crane, the traditional enemy of the pygmy. Then we have two spectators, the artist seated at an easel, with a small table that serves as a palette. Next is the artists subject. Just behind him to the right is an apprentice who should be drawing the model to his right, but is watching his master instead. At the extreme right is a servant employed in grinding and mixing pigments over hot coals. The pigments are mixed with heated punic wax and oil. Fairholdt says the drawing was taken from a sketch by Mazois who made it in Pompeii at the time the painting was uncovered. There were originally two cranes, but the edge showing the second one crumbled almost at once, and whole painting soon perished.

MEDIEVAL CIVILIZATIONS

In the medieval period comic art in the west wasnt much fun. It was orimarily used as propaganda by individuals, the state and the church. Monsters, demons, and satan himself were common figures. Most of what has survived from this era is in the form carvings in wood or stone. A few illustrations were made on vellum, but vellum was expensive, and often scraped clean and reused. Above is an anti-semitic example from a document drawn on vellum by a clerk of the Kings court in 1. It shows Isaac of Norwich (a rich and powerful Jew) with his supporters and numerous demons. Norwich was a jewish center at the time. Isaac is the three faced figure higher than the rest. Clerks often seemed to amuse themselves by adding little drawings to the documents.

In the castles and churches tapestries provided insulation and prestige. Some were satirical, but few if any have survived. Written descriptions say they usually showed something like the lord of a manor hosting a feast surrounded by riches. There might be hounds shown under the table scavanging for scraps, but they would have the faces of the lords rivals. I havent been able to locate any of these but there is a more dignified and famous work called the Bayeux Tapestry that some claim is an early form of the comic strip. It was created in the 11th century, and is 14 feet long and 0 inches wide. It depicts the events leading up to, and including, the Norman invasion of England by William the Conquerer. The first section is shown above.

Tapestries or carvings could be commissioned by a person ridiculing a rival or enemy, but sooner or later that person would fall from power or die, and be replaced by someone with different views. More often than not the satirical works would then be destroyed and replaced by ones more in line with the new persons views.

Perhaps the same clerk who drew the sketch of Isaac of Norwich drew the sketches of the wild Irish and Welsh males on the margins of other documents. There are a number of sketches like this and the costumes stay the same. The Irish has the upper garment that forms a flat topped hood and extends downward to nearly his waist. His trousers are fastened around his feet, which are always bare. The axe is what the document mentions. It seems that these huge axes were a fearsome weapon and a standard part of every Irishmans costume. It was being suggested that they be outlawed. The Welsh males are shown with bow and arrows or spears. In each case they have one leg and foot that are bare, while on the other side they wear a stocking and a shoe. No explanation is given.

Above to the left we have demons tempting a dieing man by distracting from his prayers by reminding him of his property and that he should worry about providing for his family. Note the use of dialogue balloons in the form of banners. On the right we have the damned being literally thrown into the mouth of Hell. The literal mouth is a frequently repeated image.

The medieval church was nearly as corrupt as the secular rulers. They had an uneasy alliance with the nobility as well as a great deal of rivalry. Even within the church the rivalry between the clergy for advancement and power was often intense. That lead to a good deal of cynicism. At the left two fox ecclesiastics are being given instructions for a mission by a superior, but the geese hidden in their hoods indicate they are thieves, and their sincerity false.



At the right is pictured a fox as a monk who is making off with goods that he has no right to. Both of these drawings are copies made by F.W. Fairholt of carvings existing in a medieval church. The problem was too widespread to deny, and was often remarked on in a joking manner, a bit like later jokes about beat officers helping themselves at fruit stands. The clergy denounced the acts, but it was often a case of the guilty accusing the guilty.

At the left is an example of the nonsense humor that was popular in this era. In this wood carving a goose has taken the place of the horse at the blacksmiths, and ironshoes are being naile to its feet. At the right is a grylli, a creature with only a head and limbs. This type of figure is common as far back as classical Greece, probably further back. However, in earlier times they tended to be rather light and amusing figures. In medieval times they were usually pictured as monsters.

A feudal society wasnt the easiest to live in unless you happened to be one of the nobility. Dreams of reversing the roles was a natural result, but not one you could talk about openly. The popularity of various kinds of turnabout art expressed that safely, as seen in the above work, where the long suffering rabbits have captured the dog and are taking him to the scaffolding to be hung.

Somewhat along the same lines, Ive run across a number of carvings and engravings suggesting that not all the wives of the era were meek and subservient. The drawing at the right was done by Fairholt from a stone carving at a church, and titled, The Breeches Won.

A Brief History of Cartooning

The word cartoon comes from cartone, the Italian word for large paper.

The story of the cartoon is the story of mass communication. In ancient times, large murals were decorated with a series of images that told a story... none of which were as drawn out or as pretentious as this folderol youre reading right now.

100 BC In Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud theorized that comics have been with us since ancient times.

This Egyptian painting tells of a farmers daily trials in a series of pictures.

In the last panel, as hes beaten to death by the Pharaohs tax collector, the farmer exclaims, I hate Mondays!.

The influence of the printing press had Renaissance artists and thinkers - including Leonardo DaVinci - concerned that this new technology would isolate men from one another. (Sound familiar? Radio? TV? The internet?!). Many worked toward the creation of a new language to combine pictures and narratives in a deliberate sequence for the purpose of preserving literal truth. (This was before the GAF Viewmaster).

Early artists such as William Hogarth used this expicit art form to depict action as if it were a stage play and employed balloons, integrating text with a picture series.

This elegant piece is titled Hey, Baby!.

The 1th century gave us zincography and photoengraving, and the popularity of picture stories exploded, appearing in newspapers all over the world. The art of displaying cartoon images and icons in a deliberate sequence gave birth to the medium of comics in print and the medium of animation in film.

(Okay. So Im skipping a bit...)

McCay was known as the Grandfather Of Animation - not because he made one of the first animations ever, Gertie The Dinosaur - but because he often chased young people away screaming, Hey! You kids get outta my yard!

One of the strengths of this medium has been its ability to consolidate the best advances of all other forms of mass communcation in a cheap and readily consumed form. Some have succeeded in using cartoons to combine the worst of all media in a big confusing, expensive, soul-sucking pile of glop! (But enough about Ralph Bakshi!) Even though they are often underestimated or dismissed as simple diversion, cartoons in general have been a vital pulse, conscience and critic in our lives.

Recently, there has been more serious respect for the form since its become a neccessary shorthand in our information age. (I can dream, cant I?)
