Battleship Potemkin at the time it came out was the standard for films to live up to because of it’s innovative editing and unique uncompromising mise-en-scene. The editing techniques pioneered in the movie were at the time raw and even risky but have proved to be ahead of their time. The Odessa Steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin is a great example of the rhythm and momentum within a film. Through an elaborate montage of juxtaposed shots Sergi Eisenstein succeeds in taking the focus off of the story and into the visual rhythm of the film.

The massacre and overall chaos that takes place on the Odessa Steps is the high point in the movie and an epic in itself. The effect starts early on with foreshadowing of the scene through a herd of people running chaotically throughout the city. Just before the Odessa steps people of the city herd through a succession of arches in all directions throughout the city. The misdirection of people running in every direction and abundance of people combine to create insanity and confusion on the screen that would rival an M.C. Escher painting.

Juxtaposed with the anarchy of the crowd is the extreme unison and symmetry of the solders. Even more so, the two opposing sides never seem to have any similarities. As the soldiers run downhill the people run up. The soldiers themselves are complete opposites from the crowd who are mostly older, homely, poor women dressed in black. All of the juxtaposition along with the symbolism creates a very powerful image. Probably most effective symbolism is the solders firing down on the civilians without a second thought or sign of grief is sickening.

Eisenstein seemed to put a great deal of focus into the sequence of a mother losing her child to the chaos. The what seems to be never-ending decent of the stroller down the stairs lasts for what seems like 10 minutes passing a good portion of the crowd and eventually ends when the stroller regurgitates the baby leaving the mother in terror. Eisenstein focuses on the mother’s grief by showing shot after shot of the mother gasping and shrieking so loud you could almost hear it. The close shots of the child laying on the floor being run over by several people and the quick cuts to the mothers face are especially jarring. It is the rapid alternation of shots between the mother and her son, which connects the two together and

makes the effect of the mother’s grief all that much greater.

Once again Eisenstein makes great use of juxtaposition to add effect. To begin with, the soldiers and mother were already in contrast through appearance. However, the opposition seems to go further with the baby as sort of a separating agent. The crowd seems to be a model for the emotions going through the mother’s head, as she shrieks the crowd seems to hurry into a panic, and she cries the crowd seems horrified and in disarray. At one point during their decent down the stairs the camera seems to follow the crowd, almost putting the audience running right along next to them. And from the crowd shot we are cut back to the conflict over the child. The two sides, the soldiers and the mother, strike at each other vigorously similar to an intense tennis match. The close ups on the face of the mother and the medium shot of the soldiers from the waste down end up an inescapable juxtaposition and even pave the way for more contrast to be observed.

Finally, the contrast gets to its most extreme and powerful method through editing. Editing allows the filmmakers to not only contrast the frame and image on screen but editing actually allows a filmmaker to

manipulate time. With editing a filmmaker is able to stretch a 10 seconds all the way out to two minutes. Even while showing extreme contrast and juxtaposition the story retains its continuity is still easy to follow. The method of repeating an action adds emphasis and in a way underlines that sequence for importance. At one point during the Odessa Steps it seems like the shots alternate from quick editing to longer duration of shots. The short shots seem to be focused on the army and the longer on the citizens. This may be for the fact that the filmmaker wants the audience to sympathize with the mother and therefore the longer takes are perfect for showing her misery and terror. The soldiers get the shorter derange shots so the only contact the audience has is that of a violent hand coming down on an innocent elderly woman. Of course this is an exaggeration but how much of an exaggeration is definitely debatable. So not only is the film creating chaos with characters but not with editing too. The editing itself is creating the action and what’s on the screen doesn’t carry with it the same significance as it once did. The editing took over the Odessa Steps sequence and the editing along with the characters is as a result is nothing short of a fluid and even poetic.

All in all, the Odessa Steps sequence is as innovative now as it was in its first year of existence. The editing techniques are extremely effective and the juxtaposition creates the meaning in the minds of the audience instead of on the screen. The editing techniques have inspired filmmakers ever since and will continue to set a precedent that filmmakers must live up to.

Self- indulgence is something that can swallow you whole without you even knowing it. You get comfortable where you are, maybe a little bit too comfortable, and thats when it all starts. First you get spoiled...you yourself, your personality, your ways of handling yourself in certain situations, your attitude, and so on. But you dont know that at the moment, you enjoy it, and think that finally life is treating you well. Everything seems to be glorious, and makes you want to scream from outbursts of happiness. You get so excited that you decide to give something back to the community - you start telling yourself that you should treat people the way you want to be treated yourself, and you do it. But do you stop to think that maybe, just maybe people differ in any way from you? Do you realize that the way you would treat yourself isnt something that the other individual might enjoy ? Or do you even know anymore how exactly you yourself want to be treated? When it is all in a process, these questions dont even ring a bell, and if they do, its a completely different bell they are ringing. You get angry at people, because they dont think the way you do. Then you start getting ideas in your head that maybe everyone does think exactly like you, but they are hiding themselves. You get overwhelmed by new things popping up in your head - am I reading peoples minds of what? You get insanely curious to what it might be, you keep guessing, coming up with new explanations and so on, while at the same time you are being chewed by that self-indulgence mentioned earlier. But you dont know it yet, and you wont listen to what anyone says...because hey, you think you already know it all. It goes on and on...and seems to be something magical...you feel like you have opened a door that other people could only dream of finding. By now you already forgot about everyone else around you, you dont notice the way things are going, because you in your own mind are always right...and since you made a great discovery of figuring people out, and being able to read their minds, you cant tell right from wrong anymore. You spend days and weeks and even months bathing in it, and it actually feels good. People around you start making remarks about your behavior...but you only hear what you want to hear - them denying the truth that you have found. You get lost in yourself...the priorities and ideas that you used to have are now adapted to your new way of thinking. You dont care what people say or how they act towards you anymore. You know that they are faking, and pretending they dont know that truth, so you disregard everything, and everyone. Then it starts getting too heavy, by now everyone is almost throwing up from the way you handle yourself, but you still dont even know it yet. You keep telling yourself that people will get punished for how they are misusing that sacred truth, and that you are going to be the only one in the end. I have no idea how all of this started, things happen for a reason. How can I be sure about anything thats going through my head anymore? Ive been fooled by my own self... Im still on a rough ride...but everything happens for a reason. So if you are up for keeping your mind open, keep it open not just for yourself. my own

Conflict in “Antigone”

In the following paper, I plan to discuss the source of conflict between the title characters of Antigone and Creon in Sophocles “Antigone.” I will also discuss how each character justifies his or her actions and what arguments they give for their justifications. Finally, I talk about who Sophocles believes is right as opposed to whom I believe is right.

The main source of conflict between Antigone and Creon is the issue of the burial of Antigone’s dead brother, Polyneices. Both of her brothers were killed in battle; however one brother fought against their home city and was considered a traitor. Creon issued a law that whoever tried to bury Polyneices would be put to death. Antigone is very upset because her one brother is graced with all the rites of a hero, while the other is disgraced. Antigone is determined to bury her brother because of her loyalty to her family and to the gods. She believes that no mortal, such as Creon, has the right to keep her from her own. Even if Antigone must die during the burial, she will not disgrace the laws of the gods. She believes that she has to please to dead before she pleases the living.

Creon’s states, “Whoever places a friend above the good of his own country, he is nothing.” (Antigone 0-04) Therefore, he does not allow the burial of Antigone’s brother because he did not place the good of his country first. He was a traitor is Creon’s eyes. Creon made this law for the good of his country. The following statement that Creon makes exemplifies this “I could never make that man a friend of mine who menaces our country”, “Never will the traitor be honored above the patriot” (Antigone -5) Creon’s argument is for loyalty to the country and he does not think that the gods would have any concern about the body of a traitor.

Antigone goes on with the burial of Polyneices because she claims that Zeus did not make the proclamation and that a mere mortal cannot override the gods. Her justification for the burial of her brother is that she will not break the laws of the gods. She already knows that she will die one day and she would rather die now than to let her brother rot. Allowing this would be a pain greater to her than death itself.

When Creon discovers that Antigone is the person that defied his proclamation, he still sticks to his word by punishing her to death, if he lets her go, he is not a man, she is. “This would be unheard of” states Creon, “No woman is going to lord it over me.” (Antigone 588-58) Creon could not make a law and then take it back, especially not for a woman. He says, “I’m not about to prove myself a liar, not to my people, I’m going to kill her.” (Antigone 7-75) Creon also feels he must defend the men who live by the law and never let a woman triumph or be inferior to a woman.

I believe Creon originally made this for the good of his country. He would not be considered a very good leader if he allows the burial of traitors. However, when he finds out that the one who broke the law was a woman, it became a matter of pride. He could not rebuke what he originally said, especially if it was a woman that broke the law. He would be believed to be less of a man to listen to what a woman told him to do.

I think that both Creon and Antigone can be considered right in their struggle. Antigone is suffering greatly due to the loss of both of her brothers. Her one brother was treated as a hero and the other as a dog. The gods also ruled Antigone. She was fearful of their wrath if she disobeyed them. I do not believe she did anything wrong and I see no weaknesses in her argument. I think that she did the right thing and was very brave for doing so. Creon can also be considered right in his argument. He has his pride to worry about; he is the king after all. Kings are not supposed to say one thing and then do another. He proclaimed a law that was not to be broken. His biggest concern was that not only was the law broken, it was broken by a woman. Women were considered to not have a voice or be strong and courageous as Antigone was. They were supposed to be submissive and listen to the man. Therefore, Creon felt he especially had to enforce his law. The weakness in Creon’s case is that his pride would ultimately prove to be the ruin of him. Creon had many people, such as his own son and a prophet, come to him and try to warn him of his decision to kill Antigone. Tiresias the prophet says, “Stubbornness brands you for stupidity-pride is a crime.” (Antigone 117-11) However, after Tiresias warns and prophesizes of all the terrible things that would befall Creon if he went through with killing Antigone, he changed his mind. I felt bad for him at the end of the play because he does go to free Antigone, but finds that she hung herself. Creon’s son and wife then both kill themselves as well. For Creon, it was a little too late. In the end, a messenger says, “Creon shows the world that of all the ills afflicting men, the worst is a lack of judgement.” (Antigone 17-17)

I believe that Sophocles thinks that Antigone is right. Throughout the play, the chorus makes several references of how they feel bad for Antigone. No one throughout the play, besides her sister, tries to talk Antigone into reconsidering burying Polyneices. Creon’s son Haemon tells his father of what he hears people around the town saying about the situation. Haemon says, “No woman ever deserved death less, and such a brutal death for such a glorious action…Death? She deserves a glowing crown of gold.” (Antigone 777-778, 78) The play seems to praise the actions of Antigone and it is never seen that she is looked down upon for what she did, except by Creon.

In conclusion, the gods and the love of her family rule Antigone’s life. Creon’s life is ruled by what he thinks is good for his country and pride. Creon did not change his mind to free Antigone until a prophet told him he would suffer horribly for his actions. However, because Creon was so stubborn for so long and did not take heed to anyone’s advice sooner, he ultimately suffers in the end, as does everyone else in the play. This was all due to a man’s lack of good judgment, selfish pride and stubbornness.

Dangerous Knowledge

The pursuit of knowledge has always been human nature. In our history we have always tried to make newer and better things, there are always more improved cars being made, computers are getting smaller and smaller and of course faster. Same thing is happening to cell phones they are getting incredibly small. The question is when is this going to stop, where is the limit?

Scientist are by now able to clone sheep so humans can’t be far away. Like I said before when is this pursuit of knowledge going to stop, what time is it going to be enough? There is a lot of controversy surrounding this topic, is it really wrong to clone a human being? “Clones will be grown to produce spare parts for other people, or to be used for medical research. Thus, clones -- who will be, of course, human beings -- will be treated as disposable property, with fewer rights than any slave, bred and killed for the benefit of others.”(Jay Johnson) The professor of the University of Florida puts it in perfect words, human clones are going to be treated just like animals and even worst. Clones are going to be bread for only one purpose to give their owner anything he wants, if clones are going to be made there are going to be owners of actual humans. And when one person owns another person he can take from him what ever he likes, an arm, a leg, or a heart. All this is pretty unimaginable, but it is the future of cloning.

livepaperhelp.com

Evan two hundred years ago people were thinking how dangerous knowledge can be. Mary Shelly who wrote Frankenstein didn’t get her idea from a dream or a wild imagination but she got it from Dr. Darwin the famous scientist. “During one of these, various philosophical doctrines were discussed, and among others the nature of the principle of life… they talked about the experiments of Dr. Darwin who preserved a peace of vermicelli in a glass case till by some extraordinary means it began to move with voluntary motion. Not thus, after all, would life be given Perhaps a corpse would be reanimated.”(William A. Walling ) People of that era already knew that perhaps nothing could stop the progress of science. As a result of that Mary Shelley tried to show in her Novel Frankenstein how dangerous creating a human being can and will be.

Victor Frankenstein the doctor who created the Monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein attempted to surge beyond accepted human limits and accesses the secrets of life. As the Novel begins Walton a ship’s captain and the protagonist of the Novel finds Victor in front of his ship one day. Victor who seems very sick gets taken care by the sips crew. Walton who didn’t have a friend on the ship was glad that he had a companion, and this is when Victor starts to confess. “ Do you share my madness? Have you drunk also of the intoxicating draught? Hear me; let me reveal my tale, and you will dash the cup from your lips.”(Shelley 17) Victor then unfolds and tells Walton what had driven him to disaster. When he was seventeen he went to the University of Ingolstadt in Germany, at the University Victor met M Krempe a teacher of natural philosophy who tells him that his earlier studies on alchemists has been wasted, further souring Victor on the study of natural philosophy. He then attends a lecture in chemistry by a professor named Waldman. This lecture, along with a subsequent meeting with the professor, convinces Victor to pursue his studies in natural science. Victor attacks his studies in natural science with enthusiasm and because of his studying he ultimately ignores his social life and his family far away in Geneva. Since Victor forgot about his social life he made miraculous progress in his work. After several years of tireless work, he masters all that his professors have to teach him, and he goes one step further discovering the secret of life. “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankensteinmore, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation. It was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn.”(Shelley 4) Victors reference to himself in the third person illustrates his sense of fatalism; he is driven by his passion, unable to control it. It seems that Victor didn’t have a continence, he didn’t think for one moment what’s going to happen if he tries to play god. And that is essentially what he was doing, playing god.

Finally Victor had created a creature that he didn’t even name, which shows already how the creature is going to be treated and how clones of today’s age are going to be treated. “How can I describe my emotions to this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch with such infinite pains and care I endeavored to form,” (Shelly 56). Victor essentially couldn’t believe that his creation, which was meant to do good for humankind was so hideous. Immediately as he awoke out of his hunt for knowledge he realized what he had done, and out of total fear Victor ran away abandoning his creation. As the monster was left all alone it wanted to seek revenge on its creator, on the one creator who brought the misery and pain of being so repulsive, and being rejected by society. “I, the miserable and the abandoned, am an abortion, to be spurned at, and kicked, and trampled on.”(Shelly 78) The monster even thought of itself to be gruesome and disgusting, in the wake of this rejection, the monster swears to revenge itself against all human beings, his creator in particular Journeying for months out of sight of others; it makes its way toward Geneva. As he nears Geneva, the monster runs across Victors younger brother, William, in the woods. When William mentions that his father is Alphonse Frankenstein, the monster erupts in a rage of vengeance and strangles the boy to death with his bare hands. Justine Moritz gets executed for William’s murder even though the Monster did it. The monsters next victim was Victor’s good friend Henry Clerval, the monster kills Henry because of a broken promise from Victor, and the promise was that Victor would create the monster a female companion. Out of rage the monster still follows Victor and Kills his wife Elizabeth on their wedding night. This was a way for the monster to express its feelings, and they were so bad that only killing would justify the hatred inside of it.

But what if scientists actually clone a person, with real feelings and with real skin and with real flesh and blood? What kinds of emotions will that copy have? Are we going to treat it like the monster in Frankenstein? The same problem is going to occur with clones, just like it did with the monster going on a rampage in Frankenstein; we will have to fight a war with our selves. I think that we as a civilization wont profit from cloning but it will shoot us back to the Middle Ages. Like we all know the Middle Ages were a time of no progress, revolutions, and massacres. As the creature put it “I am malicious because I am hated,” (Shelley18). Similarly, I see cloning in the same view, cloning is a transgression against nature. Through the science of cloning, a clone can save a dying person but at the same time don’t we kill another person. “Clones will be basically used as tools that will aid handicapped people, or help cure people with defective cells by taking the clones newly copied cells and putting them into the ill person.”(Dr. James) It is said right here Clones will be used as tools for handicapped people. I know that that seem as a noble cause but we are talking about a human being and not about a tool that you can use and throw away as you please. These are the problems that are going to occur when we clone people. Naturally I don’t believe that the cloned people will give up and die for their original that easily, we will have many revolutions and many massacres just like we did in the Middle Ages since the clones will have feelings just like we do, and that is for because they are the exact copy of us.

Through all the suffering that Victor went through he had learned that knowledge is dangerous and that it can hurt and kill people, he also warns Walton, who is on a quest himself for knowledge, to the northernmost part of the earth where no foot has stepped on, that knowledge is a dangerous obsession and that it can ruin lives. Walton realizing this has stopped his exploration to the North Pole saving his entire crew. “ I see by your eagerness and the wonder and hope which your eyes express, my friend… Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, that he who aspires to become greater than this nature will allow” (Shelley 110) Even though Victor loved Science and even though he had mad a breakthrough, chemically creating a human being, he admits that it was a disaster and that playing god, which is what he was doing, was a atrocious idea.

It is my opinion that no being on this planet has a right to chemically produce another being it would only cause disaster throughout the world. The same incident as in Frankenstein, is going to happen as soon as a human being is cloned, the person that clones it first clone will look at himself as a higher being. In France that already happened, where a colt leader, already thinking of himself as a god, claims to have cloned the first human being.

Whereas the cloning of humans may not produce a being like Victors creation, there is little doubt that society may react harshly to this new type of being. The expectations would be enlarged for the creation, which may lead to negative consequences for both the creation and society. Society would be forever changed once a creature was cloned. Maureen Noelle McLane, author of Literary Species writes about the drastic impact of the creation on the society in Frankenstein. “The monster is a problem both for himself and for Victor; more specifically, the monster forces what we might call the psychological re-mapping of the native human world.”(Mc Lane) The drastic changes that society could be forced to deal with could cause problems for the creature, but more so for society. Learning to deal with a being that knows it is the only creature not reproduced sexually would be difficult. The creature probably wouldn’t react as harshly as the monster in Frankenstein but it would cause definite mental problems. Learning to deal with the creature is not the only problem that society must accept. At the present time, if humans were to be cloned, many lives would be lost perfecting the procedure. John F. Killner director of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity in Bannockburn, Illinois notes; “the cloning of sheep had 77 failed attempts, including the death of some defective clones” (Bannockburn). The idea of having defective human clones dying is quite scary and inhuman.

No matter how advanced we get in the field of science cloning should never be an option. Cloning would just cause too much controversy, and once put into wheels it couldn’t be stopped. Similar to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein where the monster is hideous, and where the creator rejects the creature because of its repulsiveness. The creature of course mad at its creator ruins his life. Even though Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein is only a Novel it demonstrates that creating life and playing god can simply end in disaster. The results will be significantly bigger and worst when humans are being cloned. We as a cultivated civilization don’t need cloning to advance into the future.

HISTORY

In 10, 1-year-old William S. Harley and 0-year old Arthur Davidson made available to the public the first production of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The company started in a 10x15 foot shed in the Davidson family’s backyard in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The same year the first three Harley-Davidson motorcycles were built and sold.

In 106 Harley-Davidson Motor Company was incorporated and the stock split four ways between the four founders and the staff size increased to fifteen. The target market was the New England region and dealerships were established.

AMF, Inc. acquired Harley-Davidson in 16 and production was expanded from 15,000 in 16 to 40,000 in 174. AMF liked the idea of short-term profits instead of investing in research and development and retooling. During this time the Japanese competitors were improving the quality of their motorcycles. Harley was not doing the improvement to its own bikes and began to turn out inferior equipment. AMF chose to ignore the competition and when in 175 Honda introduced its Gold Wing they became the leader of the touring bike industry, something that Harley controlled for years.

livepaperhelp.com

Sales continued to be high during the ownership of AMF but profits were weak, and the company had severe problems with poor-quality manufacturing and strong Japanese competition.

In 181, Vaughn Beals and 1 other managers bought out the company, and then proceeded to install a, Materials as Needed (MAN) system, to reduce inventory and to stabilize the production schedule. This also forced production to work with marketing to create more accurate forecasts, resulting in only a 10% variance.

185 Harley-Davidson went public again, James L. Ziemer, the CFO stated, “You throw cash at it, try to grow to fast, you’d destroy this thing.”

During 1, the company acquired 4% interest in Buell Motorcycle Company, a manufacturer of sport/performance motorcycles. And then in 15 the company purchased all of the common stock and common stock equivalents of Eaglemark Financial Services Inc. Eaglemark provided credit to leisure product manufacturers, their dealers, and customers in the United States and Canada. Then in 16 the company announced that it would discontinue the operations of the Transportation Vehicles segment so that it could concentrate on its core motorcycle business. In science, it is vital that the information that has been obtained regarding the products created be as accurate as possible. To obtain the accuracy of different products, many different types of ?yields? are taken into consideration. A yield is the amount of product that is obtained in a chemical reaction. The theoretical yield is the amount of product that we predict will be obtained using stoichiometric calculations and balanced equations. The actual yield is the amount of product that is actually obtained at the end of a procedure. Sometimes the actual yield in a chemical reaction turns out to be less than the theoretical yield, and because of this, there is something called the percentage yield. The percentage yield is the comparison of the actual yield and the theoretical yield giving an indication of the efficiency of a chemical reaction. The percentage yield is a very important value especially to the industries all around the world; who have a main purpose to increase efficiency, and thereby creating larger profits.

The official cash rate is an overnight interest rate and is the Reserve Bank of

Australia’s (RBA’s) key monetary policy lever. The RBA conducts open market

Operations (buying and selling Commonwealth government securities) to maintain the cash rate at its pre-specified target level.

All other money market and bond market rates are related to the cash rate after allowing for maturity risk, credit risk and interest rate expectations.

live paper help

The cash market is a market for the deposit and lending of funds overnight. Banks, financial institutions and large companies will deposit any surplus cash in the market in order to earn interest.

The interest rate on these funds (i.e. the cash rate) is determined by the demand + supply for funds.

The demand for cash is determined by the reserves of cash (exchange settlement funds) held by banks in their Exchange Settlement Accounts (ESAs) with the Reserve Bank.

These funds are used on a daily basis by the banks in settling transactions between themselves. The Reserve Bank stipulates that these accounts must not be overdrawn (and pays nominal interest on them), so banks typically keep reserve balances in their accounts to meet unexpected requirements for cash.

The supply of cash in the short-term money market is determined by the Reserve Bank. It has monopoly control over the supply of cash. Settlement of debts between commercial banks does not change the supply of cash, only the balances in each bank’s Exchange Settlement Account. The supply of cash will only change when the Reserve Bank makes a payment to a commercial bank’s ESA or a commercial bank makes a payment to the Reserve Bank.

For example payments of taxation to the Commonwealth government by the banks will lead to a rundown in ESA balances and the supply of cash will decrease unless the Reserve Bank injects more cash into the system to maintain the cash rate at its current level.

The Reserve Bank controls the volume of cash through its market operations. Purchases of existing Commonwealth Government Securities (CGS) by the Reserve Bank will lead to a rise in the supply of cash when payments are made into a bank’s ESA.

When the Reserve Bank sells CGSs commercial banks will withdraw funds from their ESAs and make payments to the Reserve Bank, reducing the supply of cash in the market.

The Commonwealth government’s budget outcome is also fully financed through the issue of bonds so that there is no need for the Reserve bank to ‘print money’ to finance any budget deficits.

In the above figure it illustrates what would happen to the cash rate if the RBA wanted to ease or tighten monetary policy using market operations. If the Reserve Bank wanted to tighten the stance of monetary policy because of fears over rising inflation, it would conduct market operations to achieve a shortage of cash in the cash market.

If the Reserve Bank wanted to achieve an easing in the stance of monetary policy it would create a surplus of cash in the cash market. This could be achieved through buying existing CGS by making cash payments into banks; ESAs.

This would lead to an increase in the supply of cash (S to S ) relative to demand and cause a fall in the cash rate from r to r .

These changes in the cash rate only occur when the Reserve Bank alters the stance of monetary policy. Changes in policy are announced to the cash market when the Reserve Bank states its dealing intentions and target for the cash rate.

Monetary policy refers to actions by the Reserve Bank of Australia (the federal government’s principle monetary authority) to influence the supply and cost of credit in the economy. The main tool of monetary policy is the Reserve Bank’s use of market operations (the buying and selling of Commonwealth Government Securities or CGS) to influence the official cash rate or interest rate paid on highly liquid deposits in the cash market or short term money market.

By influencing the official cash rate, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is able to indirectly affect the term structure of interest rates in the financial system, which in turn will affect the level of spending, output, inflation and employment in the economy.

The Reserve Bank has an operating target % to % CPI inflation over the economic cycle and uses monetary policy to achieve this objective.

AOL is the world’s leader in interactive services, as well as, the largest media company in the U.S., making it the fourth largest company in any industry in the U.S. This is the largest merger in U.S. corporate history. America Online’s merger with media giant Time Warner has created a multimedia behemoth. The two corporate giants join through stock worth $50 billion. The new company is now known as AOL Time Warner Inc.

II. Strategy

AOL Time Warner’s mission is to build a global medium as central to people’s lives as the telephone or television…and even more valuable. With the focus on consumers, this company is a global company delivering branded information, entertainment, and communications across rapidly converging media platforms and changing technology. The merger combined Time Warner’s vast array of world-class media, entertainment, and news brands and its technologically advanced broadband delivery systems with America Online’s extensive Internet franchises, technology, and infrastructure, including the world’s premier consumer online brands, and unmatched e-commerce capabilities. AOL Time Warner’s unparalleled resources of creative and journalistic talent, technology assets, and expertise and management experience, will enable the new company to dramatically enhance consumers’ access to the broadest selection of high-quality content and interactive services. By merging the world’s largest Internet and media companies, AOL Time Warner will be uniquely positioned to speed the development of the interactive medium and the growth of all its businesses. The new company will provide an important new broadband distribution platform for America Online’s interactive services and drive subscriber growth through cross marketing with Time Warner’s finest brands.

AOL Time Warner’s brands will include AOL, Time, CNN, CompuServe, Warner Bros., Netscape, Sports Illustrated, People, HBO, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, AOL MovieFone, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Digital City, Warner Music Group, Spinner, Winamp, Fortune, AOL.COM, Entertainment Weekly, and Looney Tunes. In addition, to fully integrating its brands into a digital environment and bringing them closer to consumers, AOL Time Warner will have a wealth of creative resources to develop products specifically suited to interactive media.

Principal Competitive Strategy

AOL Time Warner’s principal competitive strategy is a growth strategy. They seek out opportunities to acquire other company’s within the same scope of business as theirs and that uses the same or similar types of technology and tools.

Sub-strategies

AOL has sub-strategies that also define the organizations capabilities. This includes to continuously throughout the years make technology simple for its consumers and the offer of simple e-business solutions to the market. These core competencies have proven to be a strength that can be strategically applied to a wide array of products and markets.

Financial Analysis

After the merge of AOL and Time Warner, the company increased its revenue and the net income rose. The revenue reflected growth in the number of subscribers and increased advertising income. The earnings reflected the growth of higher margin advertising. However, in recent months

III. Strengths and Opportunities

AOL Time Warner has many strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Customer care seems to be one of AOL’s greatest strengths. They offer a complete package of online features, on-line privacy and security, parental controls, and magnificent customer service. Their determination in creating a loyal customer base has paid off. Some other strength which AOL possesses is the generation of revenue and the brand name. The generation of revenue is an estimate of AOL revenue breakdown suggests that it can generate over one billion dollars of sponsorship and advertising revenue, which is about .5 times that of Yahoo’s revenue. The AOL brand name is involved is so many different markets that when it comes to selling, what the customer will know is the AOL brand name.

America Online and Time Warner will have many opportunities to combine their assets to create unique new expanded services to drive increased consumer usage, and marketing and promotion capabilities to fuel rapid growth for their shareholders and employees. The combination of Time Warner’s prestigious music labels and roster of established stars and new artists with America Online’s online marketing and e-commerce capacities will create powerful music destinations. America Online’s AOL TV and Moviefone combined with Time Warner’s cable networks and Warner Bros. movies and television will provide valuable programming, cross promotional, and e-commerce opportunities. AOL Time Warner will be able to develop and leverage technology across all of the businesses, creating new opportunities to expand services and share infrastructure. AOL Time Warner’s ability to offer the finest content will expand the already growing number of consumers seeking to access the Internet at high speeds via cable modem, DSL, wireless or satellite.

IV. Weaknesses and Threats

Because of the merge, Time Warner is required to open up their cable systems to rival Internet providers. This results in more Internet companies on Time Warner’s cable, which increases competition and decreases the amount of profit that AOL was set to make from the deal. As a result of the merger, AOL issued a premium to the Time Warner stockholders, which ended in them getting one and a half shares for each Time Warner share that they currently owned. This stockholder premium has proved to be expensive in the future, as AOL has been obligated to make payments on the combined company’s debts. Also, this merger has raised issues of concern with the local government because it has created a threat to monopolize the industry.

The top of the list concerns for AOL is the introduction of broadband as a threat, a shift to free dial-up access. The emerging trend of free dial-up access offered by NetZero is threatening to devour AOL’s free access fee, which is still the bulk of and estimated to be as high as 75% of its revenue base. The market is highly competitive. Microsoft, as well as, other formidable competitors are trying to dominate the Web-browser market and discourage innovation and competition. Therefore, this affects AOL dramatically more serious in its potential consequences for a competitive new media entertainment.

V. Problem Statement

AOL Time Warner has reported a loss of $45.5 billion, due primarily to the depreciation of its flagship America Online property, bringing the company to post an annual loss of $ billion, the biggest corporate loss of U.S. history. This has caused AOL Time Warner’s board of directors to remove the “AOL” from its corporate name. Richard Parsons, AOL Time Warner CEO, stated, “We believe that our new name better reflects the portfolio of our valuable businesses and ends any confusion between our corporate name and the America Online brand name for our investors. The problem results in the new accounting rules, the overall weakness of the advertising industry, and the depreciating value of America Online, the Internet, and the cable business. With this and the increased level of competition in mind, their leadership must be solid and able to conform to the changes that occur in this industry. These changes include the way in which people use and access their communication sources.

VI. Strategic Alternatives

There are many alternatives that are open to Time Warner’s organization. The most feasible alternatives are those that allow the company to maintain its competitive advantage, reduce costs, and increase its profits. Time Warner should conduct a thorough industry analysis at least twice per year. This would help them to understand the structure of the industry and how profitable it can be. This would also allow them to see apparent opportunities for the growth in which they desire. Time Warner can increase revenue by incorporating free dial-up access, changing advertising strategies, and placing value back in the cable and Internet businesses. They should also leverage their personnel department in order to maintain a well-trained, as well as, diverse group of employees.

VII. Recommendations

We strongly suggest that Time Warner, whom is still under investigation by the government, change its profit structure because it is no longer solely dependent on its Internet services for revenue. In doing so, Time Warner can eliminate the free access fee and incorporate the free dial-up access, which will increase revenue. With the acquisition of Time Warner, the largest media monopoly, they will now have proceeds coming from Time magazine, CNN, Warner Bros., People magazine, Looney Tunes, Fortune, the Warner Music Group and HBO, which are all Time Warner names. In addition, Time Warner should change its advertising strategies. If Time Warner focuses on these alternatives their future growth and profitability would be substantial.

Now that the name “AOL” has been dropped from Time Warner and there have been management changes, the company has a lot of momentum and an exceptional chance of becoming very profitable if their growth prospect matches that of what this company is capable of. In order for this to happen, Time Warner has to be able to smooth out some of its rough edges, such as anti-trust issues, FCC regulations, and its broadband court battle.

Obesity is one of the most serious chronic diseases affecting individuals today in our country and has been increasing among U.S citizens for many years now. Over 0% of our country’s population is considered obese (Focus on obesity). Obesity begins at 5% heavier than healthy body weight (Malat). Obesity has often been measured by “desirable” or “relative” weight. If someone wanted to find their healthy body weight they could use the body mass index charts which simply takes body weight in kilograms and divides it by height in meters, squared (Health Implications). These charts only measure if a person is overweight and only estimate body fat. A heavily muscled athlete may be overweight using any of these charts and have very low body fat. So to determine if a person is obese or simply over weight do to increased muscle mass. One needs to use methods such as skin fold measurements and under water weighing to detect excess fat.

Many people feel that the primary cause of obesity has to do with psychological and genetic factors. In fact these are all secondary causes. The primary cause of obesity is energy imbalance (Brown). This just means our body absorbs more calories than we can burn. The way the majority of us eat has a lot to do with this and its no surprise so many people are obese. Fast foods are not the only problem with giving us to many calories. Many people eat other nutritionally bad foods like snack foods, butters and desserts. At the same time people are overfeeding themselves. They are becoming less physically active letting machines and vehicles do all the work for them. Combine this with overeating and bad nutritional diets and it’s easy to see how the energy balance gets all mixed up. People in there 40’s and 50’s tend to be more vulnerable to obesity due to a slower metabolism and decreased physical activity (Cottrell5). It is increasing though in all major race groups including younger adults ages 4 to 40 (Cottrell6).

So why should people be concerned? Obesity is one of the causes of diabetes, which is the elevation of blood sugar levels that can lead to the damaging of tissues throughout the body (Health implications). Being obese can also contribute to elevated cholesterol, heart disease and high blood pressure. It’s also a risk factor for several cancers, like colon, prostate and breast cancer (Health inplications). Many studies have also been done that show obesity can have an affect on a person’s longevity. Obesity can create enormous psychological and social burdens as well (Comings7). In fact in terms of suffering, these burdens may be even greater than the physical burdens of obesity. Morbidly obese people often experience discrimination at work and can’t even enjoy simple things like watching a movie in a theatre or riding a bus. Many obese people try to avoid social interaction or public places so they won’t have to listen to people ridicule and make fun of them.

Obesity is considered a chronic illness that requires medical treatment and life long management (cottrell6). So one essential step in overcoming obesity is for obese people learn weight management skills to monitor and modify their energy balance (Brown). Weight reduction may be life saving to people with extreme obesity (Focus on obesity). Several strategies can be used for proper weight reduction. Nutritional dieting combined with an exercise program is the most common cure for overweight people. Weight loss medication is also common but a controversial treatment for obesity. Most diet pills help reduce and maintain weight loss and can have negative effects but they seem to work so people don’t care about the side effects. FDA found that many diet pills could lead to serious heart valve damage and other problems such as headaches, constipation and a increase in blood pressure (Cottrell6). Surgery is also another option that can be considered for those who are extremely obese 100 pounds or more overweight (Malat).

The evidence is overwhelming; obesity has adverse effects on health and longevity. Obesity contributes to the deaths of an estimated 00,000 Americans every year (focus on obesity). We are Fortunate there are ways to help obese people. One of the methods is to increase the understanding of obesity to enable prevention. It is also important to get appropriate medical help to reduce being overweight with the right program of diet, exercise and lifestyle changes in order to avoid long term complications associated with excess body weight and fat.

) I agree with their strategies, the goal is to take full advantage of the internet to sell products and services, streamline operations and purchase materials and supplies. So far this seems to be working for Ge according to their numbers.

Until recently, this was a problem at all levels. A constant lack of communication, and response time kept the organization busier than it should have been. Since we operate 4hrs a day, seven days a week, communication is a priority that could no longer be ignored. The core of the problem was in my workforce. When I was assessing the problem, I compared sets of “sleep teams”, and the differences between them. Sleep team A worked from

As of recent, our economy and social patterns have changed in a very different manner. Seeing the bottom of the graph since the economic boom of the mid 0s was a strange thing for many companies and individuals. Seeing big companies having to make drastic changes brought about panic and anxiety. Many companies, before the economic slowdown, were being managed in a way that core responsibilities and functions were being left to the front line manager. Many upper management employees rode on the success of their respective companies, and lost touch with the purpose and vision of their company. Their only interest was to do the least, while making the most. The recent layoffs done by different fortune 500 companies are a direct result of this factor. Over staffing was done during the good times to alleviate the responsibilities and duties of upper management. Seeing that our recent trend has been to cost cut, management and its core concepts are playing a bigger role now than -4 years ago.

Getting back to the basics is what many companies have been forced to do. Running a leaner work force and maximizing the effectiveness and productivity of their existing workforce has been a priority set upon by these factors

• Reality of the internet catching up with the concept

• Consumer confidence falling due to economic slowdown

• Threat of terrorist attacks, and the cost of prevention.

These and many other factors have contributed to the trend that is slowly changing the future of management. How do these factors affect the four basic functions of management? Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling

• Planning- Many organizations have had to change their organizational, strategic, and budget plans in part due to our economy. Leaner projections, smaller budgets, and thinner organizational structures will be the way companies will cut cost, and remain competitive.

• Organizing- Smaller departments, and the increase in workload for individual employees is the way management is headed. No longer does the employee control the market, employers are now more demanding, and have the luxury of organizing their structure in such a way the benefits the company. More responsibility and pressure along with more scrutiny in the positions existing employees and managers hold.

• Leading- Since the future trend is to give more work to less employees and managers, leadership and its core functions will have to follow suit. Motivation to follow, a clearer vision, and the ability to keep employees focused will have to be the main concepts that people in leadership positions will have to further consider.

• Control- The function of control will have to evolve with the rest of the changing concepts. More control with less lines of communications is the key to success in this new type of economy. Companies will adapt to having more control of the front line operations, and having more managed policies and guidelines.

What does this all say about the future of management? Getting back to the basics is the forecast for the future of many managers and employees. With tighter budgets and slower consumer response, the future for many companies will lie in how well they adapt to these changes, and how management learns to apply the basic core concepts of management.

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear.

H.P. Lovecraft

Fear is a basic part of human nature, of even life itself for all creatures. We are not born with fear, though. It is something we learn very quickly. Fear is a safety mechanism to keep us from putting ourselves in danger, from causing ourselves pain. Even a little baby when first born has no fear that whether it can survive in this world, but it does develop that fear when its mother wanders too far. Fear develops as a reaction to negative things one experiences, basically from pain. Pain can be physical or emotional. Fear and pain are two sides of the same coin. Without pain, we would have no fear. Without fear, we would put ourselves in a place where pain would destroy us. So fear is actually good for us. We must learn to manage fear, though. or fear, too, can destroy us.

According to Oxford University Press Dictionary, the definition of “fear” is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. It seems like some are born with fear, and others have never experienced it. . Throughout history, man has feared natural forces like hurricanes, floods, blizzards, and volcanos which they already experience that would harm man. Others fear as small as fear roaches, spiders, snakes because of the creatures shapes. Sometimes, fear can bring people benefit like if I see an auto accident on the freeway. I fear of it, however, it will help me pay more attention for what on the road. Also, fear can play a big part in culture, like when parents teach their child the fear of God, or the fear of Hell, both of which help a child learn to be good. However, fear can have some negative effects. Some people can’t manage the fear. They allow it to take complete control of all their actions, to act beyond reasonable caution. For example of a quote from German Proverb, “ Fear make the wolf bigger than he appear”. An intense form of fear is known as a phobia, which is an extreme or irrational of fear. The Phobialist.com lists conditions like Brontophobia, the fear of thunder and lightning, Cyberphobia, the fear of computers or working on a computer, Acrophobia, the fear of heights, Agoraphobia, the fear of crowds, and Hydrophobia, the fear of water. Phobias can be quite disabling. For example, if you have Acrophobia your fear of high places could easily prevent you from working in tall buildings, which could easily keep you from taking a good paying job for an irrational reason. Your fears can keep you from enjoying life or even preoccupy your thinking so that you are unable to work, sleep, or do many things you want to do or need to do. However, phobia can be overcome if man faced what feared him and permit it to pass over him. I seem to have borderline Graphophobia, the fear of writing. If I allowed this to consume me, I would never be able to complete this assignment, this course, or even my college degree.

Sophocles was born in 45 B.C about a mile northwest of Athens. He was to become one of the great playwrights of the golden age. Sophocles father, Sophilles, was a wealthy merchant. Sophocles father was a rich man through the efforts of his slaves who were employed in various sorts of manufacturing. Sophocles would enjoy all the comforts of a thriving Greek empire. Consequently, the boy was educated as was customary for youths of aristocratic family, in dancing and music, coupled with gymnastic instruction. In fact, he was so conspicuous for his beauty of form and for his skill in dancing and music that he was chosen to lead the chorus of boys in the public celebration of the defeat of the Persians at Salamis.

Sophocles made his first appearance as a contending dramatist at the City Dionysian in 486 B.C. when he was twenty-eight years old, winning the victory over Aeschylus. From that time on he generally exhibited every other year and won in all eighteen victories at the City Dionysian besides those won at Lenaea.

As one of the great innovators of the theatre, he was the first to add a third actor. He also abolished trilogic form. He used tragedies to tell a single story. Sophocles chose to make each tragedy a complete entity in itself. As a result, he had to pack all of his action into the shorter form, and thus clearly offered greater dramatic possibilities. Many authorities also credit him with the invention of scene-painting and painted prisms.

Of Sophocles’ more than 10 plays, only seven have survived their entirety. Of these, Oedipus Rex is a supreme example of unconscious dramatic irony and is regarded as he perfection of Greek tragedy irony. The tragedy of fate explores the depths of modern psychoanalysis as Oedipus unwittingly kills his father and marries his mother in an attempt to avoid the very prophecy he ultimately fulfills. As masterful work of plot and suspense, Oedipus Rex is often heralded as a perfectly structured play of dramatic irony.

Sophocles’ greatness as a dramatic writer consisted not so much in his inventiveness as in his development and rounding out of the dramatic form brought into being by Thespis and Aeschyles. He added the third actor and thus pronounced the doom of the chorus as an element of prime importance in Greek tragedy. Sophocles dramatic interest always hold first place. He plays are outstanding for their smoothness of plot, the nobility of the characters and the graceful charm of the lyrics. In a sense they might be said to mirror the serenity of the poems’ own life. He had a tranquil and contented temperament and a generous spirit free from petty jealousies. He was witty, agreeable, and fond of people and his mind was keen and active right up to the time of his death at the age of ninety-one.

Dramatic irony is a relationship of contrast between a character’s limited understandings of his or her situation. It is found in some particular moment of the unfolding action and what the audience, at the same instant, understands the character’s situation actually to be. Dramatic irony as such is not necessarily tragic. For example, in comedy, the change in circumstances dramatic irony portends can be for the better. Some of the most famous and powerful uses of dramatic irony are associated with the tragedy. There it serves it emphasize how limited human understanding can be when it is most plausible, and how painful the cost of the misunderstanding can be. In some instances, they are inevitable.

There are a few places where the audience’s prior knowledge of the full story enables dramatic irony. A character, in this case, Oedipus or Jocasta makes a remark that he or she understands to apply to the facts in a particular manner, but the audience understands that it applies as well. Instead the character is ignorant and eventually brought to light for them and will change their circumstances.

The particular flavor and thematic resonance of individual instances of dramatic irony in a given tragedy will depend on the particular circumstances of that individual work. The questions at the end are designed to prompt us to take stock of what may be special about what Sophocles wants to use dramatic irony to emphasize in this particular work.

The term “dramatic” as incorporated in the term dramatic irony has nothing to do with “dramatic” in the sense of sensational or even emphatic or obvious. Dramatic irony can be quite unassuming or subtle. It only needs to be interesting. Some, but not all cases of dramatic irony involve unconscious hypocrisy. In unconscious, the speaker intends to be understood as meaning what his utterance would ordinarily be understood to mean. The speaker in unaware that the situation is at odds with this meaning. It is noted that in conscious hypocrisy, the speaker is aware that the situation is at odds, with what he gives himself out to mean. Which means, he intends to deceive the hearer. A classic instance of dramatic irony that involves no hypocrisy, takes place in the scene in which Oedipus reproaches his brother-in law Creon. He then mistakenly but plausibly believes to have conspired to bring him under suspicion of having killed the former king of Thebes in order to have him expelled from the city. Therefore, he will be able to take over the kingship in his stead. He tells Creon that a man is a fool if he thinks he can sin against his kinfolk and escape the wrath of the gods.

Another classic instance of dramatic irony that involves no hypocrisy takes place in the scene in which Oedipus reproaches his brother-in-law Creon. He soon come to mistakenly but plausibly believe to have conspired to bring him under suspicion of having killed the former king of Thebes. This was done to have him expelled from the city so he would be able to take over the kingship in his stead. He tells Creon that a man is a fool if he thinks that he can sin against his kinfolk and escape the wrath of the gods. The warning is phrased as a universal it applies to every person. Oedipus is unaware that he has slain his own father and committed incest with his mother. However, the audience is aware of Oedipus’ incest. The audience is aware of the fact that the transgressions will eventually be revealed before all Thebes. The audience knows the fact that Oedipus will suffer terribly at the revelation, and the fact that the divine order is firmly implicated both in the commission and the discovery (hence “punishment”) of these crimes. It is this discrepancy between what Oedipus understands his words to apply to and what the audience understands their scope actually to be that constitutes the effect the dramatic irony.
