Courage, the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Without courage, the epic poem, Beowulf, wouldn’t mean nearly as much to the reader as it does with the element of courage. The story Beowulf is the first written story, it had been told orally for many generations before it was ever written down. Beowulf was set in early civilization similar to the time of chivalry in European countries. Courage allows us to set aside our fears and strive to achieve our goals, whatever they may be.

Courage allows otherwise normal people to perform great, heroic deeds that could be used to benefit society and to help others. That is what a hero is supposed to do, right? For example, in line 55 of Beowulf, the epic hero Beowulf says “I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames… stand till fate decides.” He says this in reference to his future battle with the fire breathing dragon that has been terrorizing Geatland by murdering townspeople and burning buildings. At this point in the story, Beowulf is very old, around the age of seventy to be exact. Instead of hiring someone to slay the dragon for him, his courage allowed him to attempt this task on his own. It was his obligation as a great king to come to the aid of his people when they needed him.

Another reason why courage is a great quality to have, is that mostly all other individuals look up and have a great deal of respect for those who are courageous. After Beowulf’s battle with the monster, Grendel, King Hrothgar expresses his amount of gratitude by saying, “Glory is yours forever and ever; your courage has earned it.” Hrothgar was obviously very pleased with Beowulf’s performance in killing Grendel. After twelve years, peace had finally been restored in Herot (King Hrothgar’s mead hall), due to the courageous deed of one hero.

In Anglo Saxon culture, the Anglo Saxons believed in immortality. Of course, everybody knows that physically living forever is merely an unrealistic fantasy to some. The way the Anglo Saxons thought of immortality is far different from it’s literal sense, “immortality” was achieved through being remembered forever, becoming a legend. Becoming a legend meant that people told stories about you, and praised your doings. Immortality was Beowulf’s top priority, in the story he even said, “He who can earn is should fight for the glory of his name; fame after death is the noblest of goals.” If Beowulf didn’t have the courage to be a hero, he would have never become “immortal”.
