In “The Red Badge of Courage,” by Stephen Crane, is a fictional novel based on the Civil War. The protagonist is Henry Flemming, a young farmer from New York State, who becomes a Union soldier. The story centers around the three day Battle of Chancellorsville, and Flemming’s participation in it. In the book author Crane shows how a scared young soldier is transformed from a coward into a hero.


Change is never easy, especially when you are going from the lush safety of his home, with a crop of potatoes, and a herd of cows, and a mother who adored him, Flemming sets out on a long march to become a soldier. This of course was very difficult for Flemming, his unhappiness is displayed on page 18,He wished, without reserve, that he was at home again making the endless rounds from the house to the barn, from the barn to the fields, from the fields to the barn, from the barn to the house. He remembered he had often cursed the brindle cow and her mates, and had sometimes flung milking stools. But, from his present point of view, there was a halo of happiness about each of their heads, and he would have sacrificed all the brass buttons on the continent to have been enabled to return to them. He told himself that he was not formed for a soldier. And he mused seriously upon the radical differences between himself and the men who were dodging implike around the fires. Further into the story as he got closer to the area of combat, Henry saw his first dead body. He stopped and stared at the lifeless eyes of the dead man, his feet almost poking through the thin soles of his shoes, and his generally ragged condition. He became frightened, replaying the sight over and over in his mind, wondering if he was to share that man’s fate.


Upon entering combat for the first time, Henry was perspiring nervously, shooting wildly at the Confederate targets. He eyes felt like hot stones. The Union ranks broke and ran. Henry saw this retreat and thought he was going to get killed. He joined the rout, panicking and running away, through the smoke and haze of the battlefield, scattering equipment along the way. He asked one soldier why he was running away, only to be answered with a rifle barrel smack to the head, drawing blood. Once in the safety of the woods, Henry felt better. He threw a stone at a squirrel and watched it scamper into a tree. Flemming thought the squirrel was smart because when it sensed danger it ran away, just like he did. He thought that justified his actions in retreating. It was a matter of survival, he thought. His wound is the red badge of courage that he longed for only it was a fake red bagde of courage. On page 55 where it says, At times he regarded the wounded soldiers in an envious way. He conceived persons with torn bodies to be peculiarly happy. He wished that he, too, had a wound, a red badge of courage. You can see how he felt towards the soldiers with the real red badges of courage.


After he ran away, Henry pretended he got lost. He found another soldier who took him to his regiment. Once reunited with his fellow soldiers, one asked how he received his “wound.” Flemming told everyone he had been shot in the head, and that is how he received his Red Badge of Courage (though of course it was a lie). Upon hearing the officers of his unit dismiss the fighting abilities of their men, likening them to “mule drivers,” Henry thought, “I’ll show them!”
