The inter-house competitions have restarted with a new innovation this year. In an attempt to increase the participation in the year long competition over a number of activities, house captains have been introduced.
At assembly last week, Mr. Nick Strange of the school’s PE department visited assembly to help the assistant rectors hand out the house captains badges. The house captains will be responsible for organising teams and help in the running and administration of the various competitions. There are boy and girls captains for each year in the three houses of Bruce, McGregor and Wallace who are overseen by senior house captains who have proved themselves over the years as good participants, organisers and motivators. Competitions have already started with basketball for both boys and girls in S4 and in S with one of the major events of the inter-house year, the school swimming gala on Wednesday 6th November.
Last week was a hive of activity for the teams at the school with a number of domestic and national matches played.
The under 15 team under Coach David Jukes was first up with a Scottish cup match against local county rivals Montrose Academy. After their win in the first round against Perth Grammar hopes were high of progress into the third round. Playing on their home pitch, the Montrose boys were bigger, stronger and worked more as a team to dominate the early proceedings. By half time, the Arbroath boys found themselves five goals to one down and facing a heavy defeat. The second period of play proved to be much better for the visitors when they competed more keenly rather than allowing the Montrose team to score more goals. Arbroath found themselves down to ten men when, through injury, one of their team was forced to lease the field of play. Honours were even at the end of the second half with both teams scoring one goal leading to a final score of 6 in favour of Montrose who now proceed into the next round of the Scottish cup.

It was two games in two days for the under 14 team who played Websters High School from Kirriemuir on Wednesday and Torry Academy in the Scottish cup on the Thursday.
Websters have improved greatly since last year and gave the under 14 boys a far tougher match than they encountered last year. In the end it was two goals from Andrew Gibson and a Liam Easson penalty that sealed Webster’s fate with final score of -1 to Arbroath.
Next day, the boys played hosts to Torry Academy from Aberdeen in their Scottish Cup match. After their game the previous day the boys were competitively fit and playing excellent football, completely dominated the game. A 4-0 victory could easily have been double that and an ill disciplined Aberdeen team were fortunate to finish the game with all eleven players. Goals from Wilkie (), Easson and Munro sealed their fate and allow Coach Scott Brown’s team to progress into the next round.
On waterlogged pitches on Saturday high School had a further two games for teams from opposite ends of the school years. The under 1’s played hosts to their counterparts from the other side of town when they entertained Arbroath Academy. These games, as with any local derby, are always keenly contested but it was the turn for the visitors to come out on top. The game was keenly contested with honours even at half time but in the second half two goals from the Academy had the High School boys chasing the game. Coach John Pratti of the school’s geography department has still to find a settled team and a number of boys were playing for their first time in their chosen positions. A late goal from substitute Sean McLean gave some hope of a draw but try as they might the equaliser could not be found. In the end it was a well-deserved victory for Arbroath Academy.
On the other pitch the senior team were playing other local rivals Carnoustie High School in a Scottish Schools cup-tie. On a wet slippery pitch both teams fiercely contested the match. After half an hour it was Arbroath who took the lead when Eddie Smith, at the back post, converted a cross from Gordon Bruce. Under severe pressure from Carnoustie, the High School defense held out until half time. The break did the home team a great deal of good as they dominated the second half for most of the time but were fortunate to survive when a Carnoustie free kick hit the post. The game was settled when Eddie Smith got his second goal of the game to allow Arbroath progress into the next round. Coach Andrew White’s team showed an excellent team effort with all players contributing to the win.
